Not sure how much of an article behind a paywall (The Athletic) is allowed to be quoted before it breaks rules, but it sounds like the Reese McGuire thing was him jerkin it in his car to phone porn. In a Dollar Tree parking lot. At two in the afternoon.

'The police report notes that McGuire was co-operative and did not deny the allegations. It also states that the deputies saw a pornographic video on McGuire’s cell phone while looking through it to find his address.

Police questioned McGuire about why he was doing that in public when he lived nearby. McGuire said he “wasn’t trying to be seen.” He acknowledged what he was doing “was stupid.”'

“What we can do now as players is focus on what we can control from now on, and make sure we show everybody we’re good players, the kind of players who work hard every single day. That what we did in ’17 was terrible. We all know it. We feel really bad about it. But moving forward, we want to show everyone that we’re talented and that we can the game.”

Nice typo in that last sentence Rosenthal

I don’t know how old they are, the logo looks like their 2020 one to me but it could just be a knockoff of the 80s/90s ones?

Pretty pissed that I'll either have to pay for cable, jump through hoops with VPN/DNS stuff, or do some other bullshit just to watch the Jays in the country of Canada. Also nice of them to tell you that after they charge you the automatic renewal fee. How are other Jays fans going to watch this year? I only ever used MLB.tv. Doubt I can afford cable. This is lame as hell. gently caress Rogers.

E: I recall people saying you could stream it through some Rogers app if you logged in with an e-mail associated with a cable subscription or something? Is that still a thing? Might be able to steal my parents / a rich friends cable login for that..

I've been reading through the Baseball 100 on The Athletic and the Roy Campanella article was pretty cool to read. He mentions in it that at the start of integration, one of the racist presumptions about black players was that black catchers wouldn't understand the nuances of pitch calling and such. I tried to think of any other black catchers (granted, I am not a baseball historian, but it is the only sport I really follow) and I honestly couldn't think of any. Russell Martin is half black, I suppose. I figured there would be a lot more, especially in recent history. Why is it still so rare?

So I was thinking about when MLB was talking about not letting players watch video of their at bats during the game etc. I fully admit I am out of my element and also a big dummy but would it not be simple to blur the catchers signs like they do people’s faces on Cops? Or am I thinking way too simplistically? I guess that is all done in post production and would be a huge workload to do for every at bat for every game?

LonesomeCrowdedWest

Yeah, I guess I was envisioning mlb providing the feeds and not letting teams do it on their own anymore. I guess that could open up a whole other can of worms

Yeah, I guess Shoeless Joe just popped into my head cuz he hit over .400 once. Looking back at his career stats I'm surprised he's not in the top 100 at all, but I guess he 'only' played 13 years and never really was utterly dominant

I was at that game, sitting in right field. Some big meathead guy came down there in the ninth inning and just started SCREAMING at Bautista to “put in some effort” and “show up to play for once”. Bautista had already homered that game. Then that play happened and the entire section pointed out the moron as Bautista stared him down. It was great

Article on the Athletic about two fans suing the Astros because they were arrested for having allegedly fake tickets. They got into the stadium fine, but in the 5th inning were arrested. Something seems weird about that. Apparently they were taken to astros jail and then a city? County? Jail after the game. A judge dismissed their “unlawful trespass” case against them. How do you get into the stadium and then be accused of having fake tickets half way through the game? I feel like part of the story is missing. Who would have even seen the tickets after they got in? Did an usher ask them to see to make sure they were in the right section and then report it to someone else who came and arrested them? Instead of saying yeah these are fake? I don’t get it

LonesomeCrowdedWest
May 8, 2008
The article says the fans claim to have bought the tickets from a legitimate source, and a judge threw the Astros case against them out of court. I feel like if they actually were fake there would have been legal ramifications. Also if they were outed by the real ticket holders, that means they didn’t make it to their seats until the 5th. Which I guess is possible. Everything about it just seems super weird
