The Athletic has a good article on why even if MLB didnt offer immunity, it would have been incredibly hard and messy to punish the players:

https://theathletic.com/1614464/2020/02/17/drellich-even-without-granting-immunity-mlb-would-have-had-trouble-punishing-astros-players/

For those without a subscription here's the main part:

quote:

Any potential punishments to Astros players would have prompted grievances and wound up before an arbitrator. And in the words of an official with knowledge of these matters, MLB would have been “smoked.” Another person experienced in this area said that MLB’s case would have been “brutal” and the league would “look a fool.”

The reason? In labor relations, the concept of giving notice is hugely important. Management must clearly lay out how the workplace is to be run. That means providing both notice of the rules and notice of what type of punishment will follow if those rules are broken.

MLB had not worked out the right to punish anyone with the Major League Baseball Players Association, though that may change for the 2020 season.

A relevant detail in the Astros’ investigation also would have made a grievance difficult: Since-fired general manager Jeff Luhnow did not pass on the league’s sign-stealing rules to the dugout, failing in the act of giving notice.

Basically the agreement between MLB and MLBPA basically didn't have a clear way to punish players, and Luhnow didn't tell the players to stop as the top exec so the blame lies with him.

PNW and especially Portland are considered the micro brew kings for a reason!

One of the things the article highlights is microbreweries in each city and if they're available at the ballpark, a lot are noted to have a decent microbrewery scene but suck at delivering it in the park (Coors Field is probably the biggest example).

I think every concession stand at Seattle has at least 2 taps, one for a boring macro like bud light and then a microbrew that varies from stand to stand.

Goddamn, I didn't realize how bad they've been historically. Funny how that 2004 team was actually super bad in spite of Ichiro literally setting the single-season hit record, and frankly having a not-bad roster except a super questionable rotation.

Not sure what you could call a not bad roster when only 3 qualified players hit above 100+ OPS for that season.

Edit: you would think with a rotation that had Moyer, Pineiro, Garcia and Meche would be a little bit better though...

No, clearly they PERFORMED badly but it's not like a team full of almost entirely no-names like the 2013 Astros where even fans of the team probably couldn't name most of the starters. And yeah they were old, but not so old you'd expect them all to be as bad as they were.

One of my favorite things to do is to remember a really bad year and try to remember who got the majority starts in each position. A lot of "remembering some guys" going on there.

Starting to wonder how much of the regular season might potentially be played in closed-door stadiums. Italy's Serie A soccer league has suspended a lot of matches outright and is playing many others behind closed doors, the Premier League is considering doing the same. In Japan, they haven't allowed spectators at the spring training games and the season might not start on schedule. South Korea cancelled its preseason schedule outright.

Stateside, South by Southwest just got cancelled. With everyone packed in and yelling, sports crowds are pretty much the ideal place for viral transmission. Some of the forecasts I'm seeing would indicate a lot of the country will be on at least voluntary lockdown by late spring and stay that way potentially into the summer. I know baseball is not going to be the most important consideration, but I imagine the owners would put up a hell of a fight to keep business going as normal, and it's not like there's an adult in the room to make them be responsible.

stealth edit: just noticed that Baseball Prospectus published an article on this not 24 hours ago.

The Mariners are already considering this possibility. Seattle has been hit pretty badly and we already had one concessions guy at an XFL game be a confirmed case.

- play in an empty ballpark in Seattle
- cancel it altogether???

There’s a few I thought about - mainly 2B, I could replace Cano with Bret Boone who put up 2 amazing seasons then a few meh seasons. Edgar Martinez and Nelson Cruz are close because Cruz’s 4 seasons in Seattle were insanely good. I managed to see a game with Barry Bonds in 2001 (opening day) so he counts!

If the 2020 season is canceled, and 2021 goes as planned, do we see an uptick in pitcher velocity? Since all these pitchers aren't straining their arms like crazy they'll be well rested, almost as if they were rehabbing from TJS.

Basically what I'm saying is I'm gonna be real sad if Felix has an uptick in his velocity and is back to normal.
