He's the best actor around. Most actors do this boring naturalistic bullshit but he performs for the camera like he knows somebody is watching him and he wants them to see something interesting. I watched a movie last night, A Color Out of Space, where he obviously just rewrote all of his own lines to make them sound more insane and interesting than the schmucky script.
