Hdmi arc was so incredibly bad when it came out, just random turning stuff on when you didn't want it to and then not switching inputs when you did want to use it.

it's sort of ok now in that my TV will detect that the amp is on and switch to it, but selecting amp input sources from the TV is a total crapshoot about what might actually happen

ofc there's the obligatory "usb drive folder" input that nobody ever uses yet is still there and always seems to be the one the system thinks you want

arc and cec both went from poo poo to pretty decent to poo poo, with the pinnacle at dumb tvs or barely smart tvs.

yeah my arc + cec setup works pretty flawlessly.

for a while i only had one apple tv and i was _amazed_ to hook up an hdmi switch to flip it between a 40" sarnsung and this little 28" and the atv volume controls worked fine on both without a power cycle or anything

i bought a samsung pro display a few years ago expecting a dumb panel, but got a tizen monstrosity. it insisted on doing weird autodetect on hdmi ports and would only do cec from recognized devices. libreelec box wouldn't work with cec on it at all, and occasionally it would refuse to stay switched to the libreelec pi

arc + cec is almost very good. i've got a ps5, a sony tv, and a cheapo yamaha receiver, and like 95% of the time it all works flawlessly... but then sometimes the receiver just won't turn on, and sometimes it will randomly turn back on several minutes after the whole system has been powered off. like what?

but it's at least good enough that i was able to get rid of my old harmony remote, thank god

it was a file sync thing. you'd make a briefcase on a floppy disk, then you could take that disk elsewhere, work on the files, and then come back and update the originals on the office network with your changes. or get updated versions if someone else changed them while you were away. or be in merge hell trying to manually reconcile things if both of those things happened.

lol yeah the "turns off then on for no reason" was definitely a thing on my last amp. I still have that hooked up on a smaller set and it's a sony and god help you if you ever go into the menu because it will then switch to that on every startup and sometimes part way through what you're watching. there's audible whining if the Bluetooth receiver is switched on on that model, gj sony

i mean straight into the bin without spending 10+ years in the box of might-come-in-handy-someday first

im a fucking monster

i have a samsung tv and got the matching soundbar for it - i.e. the specific soundbar made by samsung for this tv

- the soundbar shows up in the menus as "unknown device"
- when using the soundbar the tv will not show the volume control in the OSD
- the soundbar does not turn on automatically with the tv, you have to do it manually with a separate remote
- if you forget to turn on the soundbar before the tv then the tv will automatically switch back to the internal speakers and the default volume
- once it switches to the internal speakers it must be manually switched back to the soundbar, even if you remember to turn on the soundbar first next time
- changing the output back to the soundbar means going through four layers of menus

if I forget to turn off the amp as the output it will come back on every time the TV is powered on and turning it back to TV speakers as the output requires you to go left left left ok up right right right ok ok ok ok

If you do it wrong then your TV does a hadouken at you

i've used the same samsung soundbar with different vizio tvs for like 10 years now, it works fine lol

it doesn't identify its model or anything but i don't really care about that because you can manually rename it to soundbar or whatever. i just left it as hdmi-1 though because it's the only one that does arc/cec

conversely my parents have a samsung tv and that thing is cursed (they have a sonos soundbar and sometimes it just doesn't work)

i have a sarnsung hw-q800c sound bar and it works fine with a panasonic tv from 2018, they both turn on and off at the same time and volume control via either the panasonic tv remote or apple tv remote is applied to the sound bar

but the surround audio claims are all complete bs

samsung's flash storage in general is very good. i have a ton of their sd cards and they're very reliable, decently fast and weren't expensive

i also have two samsung laptops, both are formerly chromebooks. they run linux (shittier m3 one) and/or windows (better i5 one with HDR OLED) now and any problems with those oses are basically my fault. but really the only thing i still can't get to work is the fingerprint reader on the OLED model, under either windows or linux. otherwise they're actually pretty decent ultraportables with great displays, and since they were chromebooks, also happened to be pretty cheap. converting them into real computers wasn't terribly difficult either, it mostly involved hunting down drivers for windows (i eventually paid $7 for a windows sound driver package, absolutely worth it) and working around the shittier one's 64 gb ssd with microsd cards. that one can run windows too, clear linux is just faster and linux doesn't care about my partitioning scheme as much (e: but then again, using windows with it doesn't require a special sound driver  somewhat amazingly sound Just Works under linux on both though, as does pretty much everything else, i suppose because chrome os is linux)

there was one weird problem with the faster one's touchpad though, even under chrome os it'd just freak the gently caress out every so often. rebooting didn't fix it, seemingly the only thing that would was putting it away for a while and not using it, but then it'd start randomly happening again. so one day i got fed up with it, opened it up, and realized the touchpad would be touching a metal piece underneath when applying pressure to the bottom of it (causing a short i guess?), and that some tape across the metal part had almost come off. so i just removed it, put a new piece on and it hasn't been a problem since lol
