the ancient greeks had the concept of kalokagathia which was the inectricable linkage of goodness and beauty. stems from the idea that people with beautifully hewn bodies are closer to goodness (and thus so are their posts)

last.fm used to be called audioscrobler iirc.

"Audioscrobbler began as a computer science project by Richard Jones while he was attending the University of Southampton School of Electronics and Computer Science in the United Kingdom.[5] The term scrobbling is defined as the process of finding, processing, and distributing information related to people, music, and other data."

so some term some nerd-rear end nerd made up, or some dumbass british slang.

"scrobbled" was made-up slang for stolen/kidnapped in a kids book called "the box of delights" which was made into a lovely over-hyped TV show in the mid 80s. techbros can't name anything without it being a pop-culture reference of some kind...

back around 2008 or so i left last.fm playing on my work machine over the weekend and it went down some weird rabbit hole and became convinced that i loved Taylor Dane and Night Ranger and nothing i could do could stop it from playing Sister Christian so i had to delete my account

Exact same reason I stopped. There was no way to bulk delete the last couple of days of music and so you end up in an emo wasteland you can never leave.

Neito posted:

back when pandora was the newest thing in those lines, there was a reliable end condition for every station that you created where it would eventually be smothered in techno and electronica tracks and be useless for any other musical purpose. i suspect this was a similar thing, for different reasons.

With Pandora you would say least be able to create an entirely new set of songs to use in the channel or station or whatever it was called, last.fm would go "well, you say you want something entirely new, but you REALLY seem to like THESE kinds of tracks, hope you enjoy them here too!!!"

oh, my, god. Becky, look at her bitrate.
I had apple music for a while and it would only let me listen to the same few hundred songs or playlists with them, and once you were in the rabbit hole it wouldnt let you out.

also all the playlists with rap usually only had the "clean" radio version of songs, except it wasnt just not saying the word but still playing the beat, it would just cut out that second of the song fully

windows using C:\WINDOWS because everything was expected to have its own folder on the drive, unless it was simply meant to use the whole thing

almost nothing used "Program Files" until maybe windows 98, so you'd go to e.g. C:\DOOM95 to play doom for windows 95, C:\DUKE3D to play duke nukem 3d, C:\ROTT for rise of the triad, etc.

i think command and conquer "gold edition" (idr what the differences were but i think it was win95 compatibility, plus it came with some sweet windows themes/screensavers and poo poo) was one of the few games i had that actually used program files, but had a real weird directory, like CNCG95 or something, so i'd forget what it was

or now where they sometimes go to \%documents%\games and you find that OneDrive has helpfully backed up 1gb of Witcher 3 saves including a billion save images that it then keeps suggesting to you

idk if it's changed in the last couple of months but OneDrive cannot exclude subfolders from backup lists it's bizarre

i dunno if it's just our company's implementation but we just migrated to onedrive from soemthing else and it blocks the .dtd filetype, and oxygen puts its templates into a subfolder in my documents, and onedrive's settings are all or nothing for my documents, you can't deselect specific subfolders, so it was just failing over and over to back up my documents. which I don't give a poo poo about because I have nothing in there of any importance, so I deselected the whole folder of course, but still: why? what's wrong with Document Type Definition files, OneDrive?

i had to source vb5 yesterday to retrieve a common ocx file that wasn't even in vb6 so that an ancient app could continue to be used in win 11.

The People's Tight End.
I actually started scrobbling again and keeping all of my music locally. I have Apple Music but it's fundamentally broken. It got to the point where I would play "My Station" and it would be fine for about 20 songs or so then it would start repeating songs or shove me down some weird rabbit hole of listening to every song by The Damned. Granted, I like the group but it was literally playing a song and then a Damned song. I read that it was happening because I had "Loved" a Damned song and needed to rate more music that I like so it'll play more variety. I tried doing that but it just kept doing weird poo poo that bugged me.

I finally gave up and went back to my local Apple Music library with my Smart Playlists and Last.fm scrobbling. No cool end of year summary thing but eh, I'm enjoying my listening experience.

downloading the runtime wasn't enough?

if it weren't i would've given running it under wine via WSL a try, if it was something you really needed to work. even without installing any of the vb runtimes it has pretty decent compatibility, but you can install them anyway to increase it

regardless there is a legit reason you might want to use wine on windows anyway: it supports running 16-bit windows apps under a 64-bit version of windows, while windows itself doesn't

the app is working in my org's windows 10 soe, but they're rolling out win 11 via windows update rather than a new soe, which i am not keen on but offered to test because i'm aware of old problem apps like this one.

so, it was working in win 10 and after the win 11 update it complained about a missing ocx file, so i found and registered that file and it started working again. i cannot explain why, it was developed 30 years ago and we no longer have the source. i'm trying to get the org to replace it.

Ours was a 386/16 with 4 megs of ram that I later got up to 8. It had a 40 meg hard drive that mostly held either doom or wing commander (but not both if I remember right) and eventually got a 14.4 modem so I could dial into my buddies BBS located 2 blocks away and a soundblaster card so I could hear those Kilrathi die in 16 bit sound. It came with DOS 5.0 and also came with the phone book sized user manual which was awesome for 1337 haxoring the config.sys and autoexec.bat.

i remember a DOS TSR that would replace the lowercase 'o' in the (CGA? VGA?) graphics card's text mode font with a small letter 'o' with a stroke through it, maybe it was something like 'ø' or 'ꝋ' or 'ɵ', only it would continuously flip through a bunch of rotated variants with the stroke at different angles (i guess it would just update the hardware font 5 or 10 times a second or something), so it looked like all the o's on your screen were rolling along, like little wheels

excellent prank TSR to surreptitiously add to someone's AUTOEXEC.BAT
