now now, we all respect your choice to use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter. it's mostly cosmetic but who cares

when i was a young boy & heard older boys talk about having a "stiffy" i thought they meant like a thing they put on their penus like a guinean penis gourd

(tbf, the danish expression of the time was "have en stivert på" which is "to have a stiffy on", so it does sound like a thing you wear, grammatically the same as wearing a hat)

when the 3.5" floppy disc came in some british media outlets were trying to make the term "stiffy disc" catch on because they weren't floppy

all kinds of removable disks were called "diskette"
spinning plate hard drives were officially called "fastpladelager" which means "solid plate storage" but i never heard anybody use it irl after the mid 1990s except the military and computer science students, both weirdly into avoiding loanwords (albeit it was sarcastic in cs)

when I worked in an electronics shop as a teen we used to call the shop floor from the warehouse and ask if we had any stiffy discs and we'd get the sales people coming downstairs and asking lol

i remember when i first downloaded it, none of the mp3 players i had could do seamless track changes either (i guess prebuffering wasnt invented yet). it was quite the revelation when i got one that could, like a year later lol

this ain’t gonna stop eBay sellers trying to make out like a 5-pack of unopened TDK discs is some rare artifact

dammit the whole reason you buy used discs is for the weird poo poo you can find on them. the last batch I bought had 4 discs that were a french language tutor course.

god i miss buying "300 empty disks" thru newspaper personal ads

so many pirated games i had to get into indexing and labeling to keep track, and maybe 2 original games (they sucked)

when I worked in aforementioned electronics shop this guy came in and looked at the minidisc players and was like "these would be really good for my special needs* students, how many can you get?" And one of the other part timers got commission off a like 1.5k sale of a poo poo load of them which was a decent chunk for a 17 year old

*Or maybe they were deaf except that doesn't really make sense

e: deaf not dead that would make even less sense

Was there something special about the format that enabled that? or like is there a limitation in red book audio that makes it hard to do that with CDs?

no its just random access memory vs sequential data

i guess in theory you could make a minidisc player that pauses, but the disk is so small that seek time isnt a problem in most cases

you can pause a minidisc, but the stop button just picks right back up where you were anyway unless you double press it or eject the disc, so I don’t see any point in it. honestly wonder how many people used minidiscs for podcasts early on since its low quality mode would get you about 5 hours and podcasts don’t care about audio quality.
