I was on firefly.com in 1996-97. they had a good music recommendation system and forums and were really ahead of their time as a social network. then they tried to write new code to replace their old /cgi-bin based site and the site got too slow to use and everyone left and then Microsoft bought them. remember Microsoft Passport? that was a remnant from purchasing firefly.com

if you tried to reg GetRight (lol) with a key from an old keygen, it would tell you 'That feature isn't available in the cracked version'. be sure to use the latest keygen when pirating software, kids!

Crazy Achmed posted:what did registering getright unlock, anyway? the shareware version basically did everything i wanted back in the day on my slow, unreliable dialup connection can't remember, but probably something with retrying ftp servers on a timer, like try to reconnect every three minutes. it was a thing for semi-public pirate ftps that you were only allowed to try a connection every couple of minutes or your IP would be banned.

I have never seen an actual C-16 or +4. I spent a lot of time looking at computers in the late 80s. I read magazines about computers from the UK, Your Sinclair, Sinclair User, and sometimes Crash! and Zzap64. verrry few games were ported to the C-16 or +4, fewer than was ported to Atari 8-bit or Apple II. what were their reason for existing at all?

Is a tenured position *that* good? scientific reasearch is actually really great, it's just that everything else about academia sucks so much. the kick of actually discovering something new, or analyzing data that no one has ever looked at before is highly addictive. in the early 00s I used to get the latest Simpsons and Futurama eps off IRC. Sometimes they appeared there before they were aired because a release group got it off a wildfeed, a satellite feed that the network used to send stuff out to the local station a day or so before it aired. also release groups and the ’scene’ lol

Powerful Two-Hander posted:which metal is it that makes everything taste like garlic? some gallium compound maybe? Tellurium. inhaling the vapor turns it into an organic compound that gives you garlic breath. wiki posted:Humans exposed to as little as 0.01 mg/m3 or less in air exude a foul garlic-like odor known as "tellurium breath".[53][86] This is caused by the body converting tellurium from any oxidation state to dimethyl telluride, (CH3)2Te. This is a volatile compound with a pungent garlic-like smell. Even though the metabolic pathways of tellurium are not known, it is generally assumed that they resemble those of the more extensively studied selenium because the final methylated metabolic products of the two elements are similar Tellurium is in the same period as sulfur and selenium, all known for forming very stinky compounds.

with W98 there was a lot of reinstalls. you had the Zonealarm installer on a different drive/partition, and installed the OS with the ethernet cable unplugged. install ZA, then plug in the cable and install updates. so many portscanners and xploits.
