i never got into any of the zip drives but last time i used a floppy disk was in 2003 when i had to get a resume printed at staples for a job interview in a couple hours, lol it was truly some dark times. the disk had a read error so i had to rush home and burn it onto a cd and i remember thinking it felt so wasteful. i didn't get the job either

i remember it taking like 3 days to download the q3a demo on 33.3 which was like 80 MB. that was certainly some funny tech poo poo i just remembered.

hah good times. i had a very similar experience. started high-school in '01 and a box of floppies was on the list of required stationery. i got a box of those multi-colour transparent ones as well that were dogshit unreliable

also when i was a kid (probably not now, hearing loss) I could hear the whine from any CRT when it was turned on. If the TV was on mute and I was in the other room, I could tell you if it was switched on or not. seemed like a cool superpower at the time but it was probably not very uncommon.

That disk with all the ID games was attached to a lot of PC magazines at the time. In the UK at least.

pretty sure that's where i got it, in canada tho. it was rad because it also had the quake 1 soundtrack that could play in a regular CD player. it was really magical feeling to me as a kid at the time, that a demo cd could contain the full versions of all those games plus all of that music.

FYI, while Shango knows his stuff wrt CRT TV restoration, he's also prone to occasionally interject random racist and transphobic comments/"jokes" into his videos. He doesn't do it on every video, but if you watch enough of them you'll eventually run into one where he does. He's also against COVID lockdown measures though I don't think he's a full-blown antivaxxer.

lol @ scoffing at the cost of toner when it doesn't dry out like ink when you don't print anything for 6 months and a full color inkjet set of replacement cartridges is easily over $120 (:canada:) and the printer refuses to print anything at all even a text doc when any of the color cartridges are low

i bought a brother b&w laser printer the starter toner thing it came with lasted for loving ever
