IIRC it was used with a travelling floppy, so you'd put in the special floppy and it would sync, then you get home and the files get semi-automatically transferred.

Gosh, reminds me of the briefcase functionality in Windows.

first forum I posted on was for The Sims back in like 2001. last I checked it still exists :pwn:

I don't know how the gently caress I ended up here. possibly from the "terrible secret of space" flash animation which linked to the original ICQ prank

it was pretty cool to see pre-release "non-public" developer screenshots of Sims 2 developer builds here before it was released.

also that sounds neat, any more to the story? my interest in the sims fell off pretty rapidly so not surprised I didn't see that.

probably not, i don't know, maybe? who knows.

as for the thread, i think the user's name was ToiletDuck or ToiletDuk or something. might have an illustrated anakin skywalker avatar.

it was the summer before my senior year when my college replaced the 10Mbps dorm hubs with 100Mbps switches

also along with it came a terribad attempt at packet shaping where any traffic outside the university that wasn't port 80/443 was given like 10Mbps shared across all residential users

i fished an old PC out of a dumpster behind the engineering school and talked a friend of mine in the CS department to let me plug it in under their desk, so i could run a SOCKS proxy on it and bypass the residential traffic rules

i remember all of us using remote desktop back to our dorm machines, running FCKGW windows xp pro

All this talk about hubs, and nothing about direct connect hubs. The socks proxy thing was something I did too and oh my gosh, 100Mbit was very nice BW!

unfortunately, this had real-world collisions with other people so my macbook kept renaming itself.

a bit more games than yospos but this reminded me of forza horizon 5's allowance of e1m1 as a car horn. and there are variants.

ok so maybe that's not funny, but the cruelest horn is the microsoft teams calling horn:

expressly designed to coerce a pavlovian panic response. you know how certain sounds can make some cats and dogs freak out? freak out spouses or fellow players who use ms teams.

there is a microsoft teams phone call notification horn choice in forza horizon 5. in a tight battle for places? hold the horn button and there's a non zero chance your opponent will stop steering or disconnect.

of which since we're talking installers stuff, this now reminds me that for certain games, microsoft is trying to do snaps-like stuff and for some games off their store, it mounts "Xbox Virtual Disk" images which that then get mounted/launched in windows. forza is one of those.

a very very different animal from the very granular partially install this or that windows installer things that was demonstrated with office that was mentioned.

it's hilarious that browsers are being cut back in consoles now. The PS3/PS4/WiiU had one but in the next generation, the PS5/Switch don't have general purpose internet browsers anymore.

no demand, because well, smartphones

and more importantly, just an open vector for remote jailbreak exploits.

i think the xbox still has theirs but it's more because they're doing security right and more or less a holdover from being introduced in the PS4 era. they even transitioned to chromium/edgium.

ZipZoomfly was an internet retailer for computer parts and related products. Based in Newark, California, ZipZoomfly was founded in 1998 under the name and ownership of XtraPlus Corporation.[1] The site relaunched in January 2000 as Googlegear, but after a dispute with Google in 2003, they relinquished the domain name and rebranded as ZipZoomfly.

A formal complaint by Google to an ICANN domain-name dispute resolution provider led to the company changing its name from Googlegear to ZipZoomFly in 2003.[2] The domain googlegear.com is now owned by Google, was redirected to a Google page that used to explain that Googlegear had never been associated with Google and provided a link to zipzoomfly.com, but it now it displays an HTTP 404 error.
