Hello all. I love video game music. I love it a lot. I also love top ten lists. This thread I am combining them and I would like you all to join me. I am going to be using this thread as a place to dump my top three tracks of various video games in descending order for as long as I see fit and listen to video game music.

I have slowly been building a whole collection of posts of specific games and my favourites from each and matching the name to a particular youtube video. The idea to make this thread came from the gen chat thread, as I am someone who has not played the final fantasy games but had heard they had great soundtracks and I asked people to submit the top three songs from each game so I could judge which had the best.

I have been listening to the FF soundtracks since then and I will be posting them too.

However, to start with I am going through the various 2D Sonic games as some of these tracks have been my most listened to since the games came out, and seeing as Sonic 1 was the first video game music I ever saved (recorded onto an audio cassette tape when I was ten years old) it seemed to be the best place to start.

I urge anyone to join in for any of the games I already pick or maybe choose whatever other games you wish. I am hoping to eventually have a thread full of top 3 lists and both discover how much overlap I share with others as well as loads of brand new enjoyable music! If you want to say anything about the music rather than just posting videos, go right ahead too! I will be doing similar for certain songs.

The first song I recorded and still my absolute favourite from that soundtrack. :D Also is it just me, or is scrap brain zone basically the bladerunner credits theme?

This might be one of the top 5 best ever tracks from the whole sonic series. It absolutely rocks and is so punchy and catchy.

Ok this one is being a bit cheeky because Hydrocity is my favourite sonic zone out of every sonic game I have played and both act tracks are the greatest and I hum them all the time when doing other things. Plus it is my thread and if I want them joint first, then I will

Sonic and Knuckles
For the purposes of this thread I have seperated them into two games because that is how I originally played them. I actually played Sonic and Knuckles a couple of years before I ever managed to get a hold of sonic 3 and locked them together.

Third Place
Sandopolis Zone Act 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQTb46RLW0g

Second Place
Death Egg Act 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8mM_IP4ByM

First Place
Lava Reef Zone Act 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf1UXzrZPMM

Still utterly fabulous! I love sonic music most when it is floaty and calm and juxtaposes the frenetic speed of the games.

Sonic Mania
The best 2D sonic game and daresay one of the best platforming games ever. This game has it all including the best version of Hydrocity. However, in order to be fair I have not picked any of the music that is present in other games that has already appeared on my lists (like Chemical Plant, Lava Reef and the wicked versions of Hydrocity).

Third Place
Titanic Monarch Act 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WZg4xuDmBdI

Second Place
Hyper Potions - Checkpoint (Reveal Trailer track)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJUVNi_WOtc

First Place
Studiopolis Zone Act 1
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIWyZmFSep0

This is actually my morning alarm. Something about it is really good at waking me up :D I especially dig the opening few seconds before it launches into the full track. Superb!

I am including 3 from the EU/JP sound track and then 3 from the US soundtrack for impartiality.

Third Place

First Place
Stardust Speedway Bad Future/Good Future
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo3UcnH8y3c
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_VHsD2aa7s

OK technically this is another two tracks in the top spot, but again they are both from the same zone and equally as good. I like that sonic 3 onwards adopted the idea of changing the second act music slightly as was done here in Sonic CD. It made for some incredible remixes!

OK. Not a 2D sonic. Also a game I have never played, I have only heard the soundtrack. And also the game that has my most favourite sonic track ever.

Planet Wisp Act 1

This track is all-time number one for me. This does not sound like a song that would be in a sonic game. The piano is something else. Never at risk of being overwhelmed by the rest of the track, the serene notes stand tall. I use this track as background music when I am writing because not only does it relax me, but the constant beat keeps my pace up. This is the peak of sonic music and if I had to pick a top 3 of every single song in sonic vgm history this easily clinches the number one every time.

while I am stunned and shattered that Hill Top and Mystic Cave didn't make your top three for Sonic 2, VG, I admire your decision to include more than just the level themes themselves

Hehe thank you. I honestly like hilltop and mystic cave a lot, but the others I find myself humming way, way more. Plus I think I might like 2player Mystic cave a little bit more than single player. I listen to everything a lot and find some tracks quite underrated in the grand schemes! :D

Also thank you Ergh, Charliefoxtrot, Flavahbeast, I said Come in!, Arrthritis and Decteive No. 27 for adding :D OK. Some more from me:

One of the very first games I played over the internet (on my trusty 28.8 modem) was Total Annihilation with my bestie. We were limited (due to our isp) to two hour games because they would hang up the modem once we had reached 120 minutes for each call. As such, we had the most frantic games of TA as much as we could and as TA had a dynamic music system, playing the appropriate song based on what was happening, I heard this track more than any other :D

This youtube is technically both the ambient and combat music linked as one, but I am ok with that due to the way the music changes based upon what is happening. I wish more games did that and very soon I am going to post my three favourite songs from my second favourite game ever which has the best use of dynamic layered sound that I think I have ever heard. Hayter's Folly should be used in more than just the Pirate Booty DLC because it truly is the outstanding gem on this soundtrack and the first time I heard it I fell in love :D

Kid Chameleon was a game I was given by a kid I went to school with who hated it and found it too difficult. It was difficult, but I got a real kick out of all the cool suits and hidden areas/power ups and level skips. I played it to death and beat it eventually about four months later, but this music is absolutely seared into my brain the amount of times I heard it :D

Honestly CT needs a top 10 and you probably still won't get all the great music. Same with Xenogears.

This is part of the fun. Whittling a great soundtrack down to 3 is really, really difficult and I have struggled with a lot. I like limits in things such as this because of the way it pushes you. :D

Also thank you everyone! I am discovering great music and this thread is working out ace :D

This track gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Thomas Was Alone was a game that I played during a particularly dark patch in my life and so many of the themes that it tackles helped keep me afloat in ways that I might never properly express. This track happening when it did in the game lifted me and the lingering memories that I have mostly shut out occasionally bubble when I hear it. It is a positive thing to me, showing how far I have come and how this track reminds me that I could get back up again. I love it. :)

Nier:Automata

Alright, this was EXCEPTIONALLY difficult to narrow down. This is my second favourite game of all time, and my favourite game soundtrack. So many of these songs are magnificent that picking three was almost impossible (except for my number #1 pick.) Almost the whole soundtrack employs layered, dynamic music too. They are subtle changes in some and stark in others. In the rebel encampment there is a jukebox that allows you to chill and listen to each of the layers seperately or build them up.

This is one of the all time great soundtracks and I cannot say enough good things! :D

Weight of the World
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihqln0-FlDI

I am extremely biased when it comes to this track. I have played Nier:Automata and so what this track means to me matters and matters deeply because of what it represents within the construct of the game. It is a gorgeous bit of music, this is for certain, but its weight is defined by what is happening in game when it plays.

This track is the culmination of a game that punctured my mind and heart. If this sounds like hyperbole then it probably is. I will never not hype this game because not one single game has ever affected me the way this one did. I got pulled into something I was unprepared for and explored themes I usually only read about. It still ranks as one of my favourite video game endings and if Portal 2 did not exist then this would be unbeatable in every sense. If you have not played it, please give it a try. I hope you connect to it in the same way I did.

I will never forget the first time I heard this. It immediately stoked in me the sense of wonder of exploring a galaxy that neither of the other two games ever recaptured. It humbled the Normandy and caused me to believe that the galaxy I was about to face was huge and full of all these places I could touch down and see for myself, like an ancient explorer. :D It is the most important track for writing, for me, and I have an extended version that is an hour-long on in the background while I am being creative because it has one of the most pleasant and soothing main themes there is.

I have not forgotten about this thread, I just wanted others to post :)

Portal 2
My most favourite game of all time. I listen to this soundtrack a lot and thinking about these tracks without hearing them will actually give me goosebumps like the Nier:Automata soundtrack does. I think it absolutely is wonderful and does the same really cool layering thing (though not to the extent) that Nier:Automata does - as in, depending on the gels you have sound effects that could be part of the overall music. It is a neat little trick and enhances the mood.

Third Place
Reconstructing Science
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WAeiqxNH3W0

The 'theme song' of portal. Punchy, fun and completely representing the state of Portal 2 compared to Portal 1's reconstructing science and the general environment of Aperture Science.

Second Place
Exile Vilify (by The National)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-Vg2YS-sFE

This song can only be found and heard in game by locating a radio off in a corner of one test chamber. It is haunting and thoughtful and fits the hinted backstory superbly. I was blown away when I came across it the first time and just ended up waiting and listening to the whole thing while holding the radio. One of those gaming moments you never forget because it was so unexpected. I think it was the first time Portal 2 went from great game to something truly special to me.

First Place
Your Precious Moon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c624QWR3CXI

This is it. This is my favourite track from the whole game. It often starts 'playing' in my head when I go about my business because the moment of the game when it began playing coupled with the ending is so burned into my mind that it is almost overwhelming when I recall it. One day I will probably try to write out my feelings on this game because everything it does is the most perfect definition of a video game for the kind of person I am. To me, and my personality, it is a flawless masterpiece.
