I work on a team with 4 other full-time programmers, and just found out that they're all afraid of regular expressions and would rather parse strings manually

is this common??? Have we turned away from the face of god???

hmm why would they want to write clear readable and debuggable code to parse strings when they can use this atrocious unreadable dsl to condense it all in a lovely looking one liner

i seem to be the only person on my team who thinks that regex is an unreadable abomination and people think im weird for thinking this

the only upside ive found for regex is that you can use it for sed/awk/vim string mashing?

 regex is unreadable, but parsing strings in sql is self documenting, left, right, substring. plus in sql you get type safeness and a host of other benefits that regex can't provide.

the only upside ive found for regex is that you can use it for sed/awk/vim string mashing?

Its useful for filtering, cleaning and splitting large blocks of text in scripting and automation, especially if human data entry is involved. Once you get into positive/negative lookbehinds/aheads and capturing groups things start to look really hosed up and indecipherable

 regexes are really good for loving around with strings in an editor or in one-line commands

in code, you want real parsing

but also never parse user input, just store it and spit it back out (escape it if you have to but thats it, nothing more)
