Or, more realistically, when the playoffs go a round or so and one entire team comes down with C19 and poo poo get axed. Gotta say, impressed with the incompetence flex from the league on this one. Just when you think they're going to main overly complex and convoluted, they blind side you with deep running ineptitude. Impressive in its own way.

ok so I'm a bit rusty on hockey and I can't seem to google properly to get through the angry noise, but my understanding is only 7 teams missed the playoffs, 8 teams are in the lottery, and the 8th team actually won the lottery for the first overall pick - and we won't know who that is until the first round of the 24 team play-in is finished?

Normally, 16 teams make the playoffs, the other 15 are in the lottery, and any of them can get the #1 pick. The NHL decided to create a system where 24 teams are essentially in the playoff, with the top 8 in the playoffs and teams 9-16 in a play-in round that they aren't calling the playoffs. This was done to put Montreal, Chicago, and the NY Rangers in the "playoffs". If your team loses that play-in round, you aren't technically a playoff team and would be in the lottery. The league decided to stupidly hold a lottery that a play-in team could "win" before that play-in round. Therefore, the #1 pick in the draft will be held by a playoff team, creating maximum stupidity.

I asked my Pens fan girlfriend and she said they've won enough Cups for a while, and Lafreniere would be preferred over going deep in the playoffs. As long as it's not Edmonton, they've ruined enough careers.

Somehow I always enjoy watching the video they release of the actual lottery draw even after I know the results.
