Every year in Australia we have an international comedy festival after the Fringe World festival, and it's always fun to go and see performances. Last year I saw Phil Jupitus (Australian), Eddie Izzard (or like, a quarter of his head from where I was sitting), Stephen K Amos, and Sarah Millican, as well as some fun open mic stuff over that period. Let's share some of our favourite comedians and routines, or even shows and movies they've been in. Right now a friend and I are going through Would I Lie To You and Q.I, because you get a great variety of celebrities and comedians. IMO the panel format is so easy to get into, its great to relax into after a night out. Whose Line Is It Anyway also came back, but I find the random celebrity appearances to be a negative there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkpyd2lr4dI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iehs8MlUYWI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5r_TlPwZOvU Whose Line is also a great trip back into really poorly encoded videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E3te2FP6AWg

I've always been partial to the Rowan Atkinson Live performance. Some are clearly better than others, but I think overall it's marvelous. The 'straight man' does a really stellar job too. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uw8dW9Hyno0

To be honest, I think James Acaster is one of the funniest standups I've seen for ages. He's got a netflix four part special that is worth checking out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA0neTHUN6M

I love the absurd energy he has. Something else good for a binge is Live at the Apollo, as well as Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKnYH4aBYdE&t=467s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-9M4pLDS9Q

Shaun Miccallef is one of my very very favourite comedians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DtokOQgUTDI The phrase "earth to moon toast bridge" will never cease to cause my brother and I to piss our selves laughing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiSuXYXCJBg I loved these. There was another series in a hospital. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyqEjatCSe0 And I suppose this is what he is most famous for. I also love his career arc. Gets famous by doing an absurd, obtuse, intellectual sketch show on the ABC. Channell 9 poaches him to host a "tonight" show. Then sack him because the show is too absurd, obtuse and intellectual for commercial TV. So he ends up hosting a quiz show, and then a topical news show back on the public broadcaster. He has also been the lead in a few more serious/sensible TV shows. (Seachange, Mr and Mrs Murder, The Ex-PM etc.) He has also written a few books, which are as silly and whimsical as his TV stuff.

The giants of mainstream BBC comedy in the 1970s and 80s were probably The Two Ronnies - Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. Barker was the main writer, much of which he wrote under a pseudonym so that the production crew would critique his work honestly. Many people love the Four Candles sketch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNTM9iM1eVw but it' a bit overplayed. Here's one of their best - Mastermind. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0C59pI_ypQ Some of the references have dated a little, but there you go. But by far and away my favourite is Barker trying to order a complicated round of drinks while getting progressively drunker. The quality fo the writing and the wordplay in both sketches.
