lol you know it's a good article when it references "Nite Krew" philosopher Diogenes

quote:

Once, upon being asked to name the most beautiful of all things, Diogenes the Cynic (412-323 BCE) replied parrhesia, which in Ancient Greek means something like ‘uninhibited thought’, ‘free speech’, or ‘full expression’.

Diogenes used to stroll around Athens in broad daylight brandishing a lit lamp. Whenever curious people stopped to ask what he was doing, he would reply: ‘I am just looking for a human being’ – thereby insinuating that the people of Athens were not living up to, or even much aware of, their full human potential.

We are a loooooooooooooong way from nuclear fusion based on trash (that would essentially be a full human command of nucleosynthesis also known as Alchemy). But JET just got approval for the first D-T experimental campaign in almost 30 years. Last time they got to about 60% energy returned/invested. Things have progressed, despite the chronic underfunding. ITER is also finally, finally, making progress towards completion.

There's actually a company called Tri-Alpha in Orange County (they didn't hire me but it sounds like I dodged a bullet from people who work there) that is looking at Proton-Boron fusion (the products are three helium nuclei, thus the name). It's completely aneutronic, which means no radioactive waste (D-T fusion produces no nuclear 'waste' but the neutrons the reaction produce activate and make radioactive fusion vessel). The angle is that the licensing is significantly easier with neither reactants or products that are proliferation hazards. They do cool poo poo, but they're on the startup-model which, sketchy employer/employee relations aside, leads to overpromising when selling like, a cab hailing app, and has been a big, big problem in the field (Pons and Fleischman, Lockheed's Skunkworks). Anyway, the business degree guys are scum but their tech is really cool, and long long term this would be the way to go. you just have to, you know, contain a plasma an order or two of magnitude hotter than the DT plasmas we've spent 60 years trying to sustain.

Anyway gently caress Joe Biden and all the cop-hearted Dems who support him.

It sounds dumb. Like 'how can you measure inspiration in dollars and cents!?' but yea seriously. You get what you pay for and science is no different. You want fusion? Tomorrow? Here's what it'll cost. Want it in ten years? Ok that's a little cheaper.

Fun fact both the Manhattan and Apollo projects ate multiple percentages of GDP. One building, the Clinton Engineer works, used 1% of all electricity generated in the COUNTRY to refine the uranium.

I mean, you might need a couple years to prime the gradschool pump after years of disinvestment have sent tons of people out of the field and into wall street/data science, but yea, after gross net deduction profit percentage deferment ten percent of the nut, cash, nuclear fusion costs $2,184.

Also, gently caress to Joe, I will chain whip his Delaware rear end with in an inch of his life if I ever catch him sucking around West Side Scranton. Via my skills of reasoned debate. Parody, parody, parody.

We'd still be promising fixes in four years, instead of fixing poo poo today I'm afraid.

The tech's hella cool but we never know where the breakthroughs are gonna come from, because if we knew, we'd be there.

We could start today to replace 90% of fossil fuel use with renewables if we had the political will... and it would be cheaper, just from a straight resources viewpoint. Problem being the money would be saved by the government instead of giving companies profits.

The things that I have loving seen... the godforsaken "leftists" for Biden. Jesus loving Christ. These people... these cowards. Years and Years of screaming about Black Lives Matter, #MeToo, the Forever War, imperialism, Wall Street, the list goes on. Building whole new identities to oppose this poo poo, and rightfully so. Then the DNC runs another illegitimate primary, and these loving cowards, these loving spineless hacks, decide they're going to stab their comrades in the streets in the loving back and vote for Biden, openly declaring support for Biden.

Many of them prominent and public facing members of the loving DSA. So many of them comfortable media class hacks - cartoonists, podcasters, magazine writers, thinkpiecers, all that worthless loving poo poo that should be burned to the ground. "Proud Socialist" says vote for Biden in Swing States. Eli Valley can scribble all he wants, then tells you to vote for Biden like a good little worm. Some random dipshit Magazine editor in the DSA claims voting for Biden is loving "harm reduction" - for who, you white piece of poo poo? Your comfortable life rubbing one out in the face of people of color here and abroad?

He's not giving you loving healthcare. He's not going to bring an end to the wars. He's going to keep building Trump's wall. He's not going to lift a finger for the tens of millions of American families that have been devastated by this loving pandemic. He's promised more money for the cops and ICE, even after they've murdered countless innocent people and performed forced sterilizations on innocent Latinos. His campaign and Wall Street have confirmed Biden isn't doing a loving thing to help working people, they're rubbing one out in your loving face in celebration, and you're standing there with a smug look on your face insisting "voting for Biden is harm reduction" as it's dripping off your loving face. How loving despicable.

Why the gently caress would Biden, the Democrats, or anyone else take you loving seriously, ever, if in the face of a challenge, you completely abandon everything you loving believe in and vote to endorse the Crime Bill, the mass incarceration that destroyed millions of Black lives, the Hyde Amendement, the Patriot Act, and the loving mass slaughter of over 2 million innocent Muslims in the war Biden championed as head of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, based on lies he admitted to knowing were loving lies at the time. And you want to put him in the Oval Office instead of the loving Hague? Are you loving sick? Or are you just openly declaring yourself a white supremacist that sees people of color as second class citizens? Is that really all that matters to you? Upholding the legitimacy of a state that just loving devours poor people, especially poor people of color, here and around the loving world?

None of these public facing comfortable sacks of poo poo had the loving courage to come together, and say no, we're not voting for this geriatric rapist piece of poo poo, promising people loving nothing, other than a pledge to spit in their loving face as Wall Street continues to loot the nation, cops continue to murder innocent Black people, and Muslim children get American bombs dropped on their loving heads, for four miserable loving years, doing nothing but locking in a more monstrous and competent Trump 2.0. Because that is all Biden will do. And we all loving know it, he was Vice President for 8 loving years for gently caress's sake.

They don't even realize the loving blood from every dead Black kid murdered by a cop Biden lets walk, every Muslim wedding loving obliterated via Predator drone, will be on their loving hands. Nothing more than simpering liberal white supremacist cowards who talked a big loving talk for years and loving years, when it was nothing but interior decorating for their mind palace as their pathetic liberal brains realized the contradictions of this monstrous society beginning to unravel, and then their actions have them being good little liberals getting in line and voting for the boot on their loving necks.

These sacks of poo poo deserve Trump, I'm sorry. Biden is already doing worse than Hillary and is going to crash and loving burn in November. Anyone smugly trying to tell you otherwise is delusional. Delegitimizing, destabilizing, and dismantling this cursed, deranged loving excuse of a state is the best outcome of the 2020 election. America is done. China will soon become the dominant superpower of the world over the next 15-20 years, so start teaching your kids Mandarin now - their only hope for a decent future will be finding work as a translator after the imminent collapse in one of the many CCP managed refugee camps.

I've never been so loving disgusted with people in my life. All of those stereotypes of North Koreans we were fed growing up, that poo poo was all projection. The Women's March says they're going to take to the streets in support of a loving rapist, a man whose actions have destroyed the lives of millions upon millions of women of color both here and abroad. You cannot make this poo poo up. And now everyone's freaking out that Trump's gonna steal the election, somehow. Like Bush did, and Democrats didn't do poo poo about? With the help of all the federal judges Trump appointed, which the Democrats rushed to loving slam through the door in exchange for absolutely loving nothing? And you're going to take to the streets in support of a cop-loving warmongering freak who teargassed Standing Rock and Ferguson? Are you loving kidding me with this poo poo?

We're on the precipice of failed state territory here. And it's slowly starting to kick off. With the "opposition" party doing absolutely loving nothing but pissing and making GBS threads their loving diapers. You love to fuckin' see it.

Uhh not really. It's basically just work. I'm operations, not research, and PhD was three years back. (and my thesis was kinda bullshitty). You'll be interested to know they also turned me down for a job (no shade on them like I threw on tri-alpha, I legitimately poo poo my, and several other beds besides, during the interview). It's wild as gently caress, but no wilder than the synchronized explosives they use to make nuclear weapons go supercritical. Conductive walls stabilizing plasma instabilities is basically what I did my research on. Copper and chrome clad steel instead of molten lead, but the only difference would be the conductivity. One thing I can see, and this is the issue with NIF is, the point is not to make more energy than is used to create the reaction but to generate a steady supply of a large amount of power. I guess they must have a plan to get a repetition rate up and somehow exchange heat but I'm too dumb to see it.

They also did these explosive compression experiments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_pumped_flux_compression_generator, blowing up like, shipping containers in the canadian woods, except it's very possible that I misremember which canadian startup gave that presentation at the conference like, six years ago.

Reminds me of the late 90s era when people thought it was cool to call things they didn’t like “gay” and “retarded”.

There’s a lot of stuff that people said in the not-so-distant past that most people were okay with then but would be considered heinous today.

I think about that sometimes. Does it having been acceptable at the time excuse it? Probably not, but where’s the line where someone deserves to be raked over the coals for it?

Do you have a link to support the idea that Biden "spearheaded" the war in Iraq?

Here are a couple

https://theintercept.com/2020/01/07/joe-biden-iraq-war-history/

Passage of note:

quote:

Biden’s thought process puts critical hearings he held in 2002 as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in sharper context. That summer, as the world was focused on the war in Afghanistan, from where the attacks of September 11, 2001, had been launched, Biden sought to begin “a national dialogue” on Iraq. During a series of high-profile hearings, he feigned neutrality, but his earlier questioning of Ritter leaves no doubt where he stood: Iraq had WMDs, and the only way to disarm Iraq with confidence was to depose Saddam Hussein. Biden, given his chairmanship, was a leading voice on foreign policy within the party.

https://jacobinmag.com/2020/02/joe-biden-george-bush-foreign-policy-war/
A bit long but the relevant bit here begins around this:

quote:

So by the time Bush and his British counterpart decided shortly after September 11 that they would use the attacks to go after Iraq, Biden had already helped lay some of the groundwork for their campaign. And despite batting away suggestions of regime change in Iraq as late as November 2001, he soon went all in.
