We are a loooooooooooooong way from nuclear fusion based on trash (that would essentially be a full human command of nucleosynthesis also known as Alchemy). But JET just got approval for the first D-T experimental campaign in almost 30 years. Last time they got to about 60% energy returned/invested. Things have progressed, despite the chronic underfunding. ITER is also finally, finally, making progress towards completion. There's actually a company called Tri-Alpha in Orange County (they didn't hire me but it sounds like I dodged a bullet from people who work there) that is looking at Proton-Boron fusion (the products are three helium nuclei, thus the name). It's completely aneutronic, which means no radioactive waste (D-T fusion produces no nuclear 'waste' but the neutrons the reaction produce activate and make radioactive fusion vessel). The angle is that the licensing is significantly easier with neither reactants or products that are proliferation hazards. They do cool poo poo, but they're on the startup-model which, sketchy employer/employee relations aside, leads to overpromising when selling like, a cab hailing app, and has been a big, big problem in the field (Pons and Fleischman, Lockheed's Skunkworks). Anyway, the business degree guys are scum but their tech is really cool, and long long term this would be the way to go. you just have to, you know, contain a plasma an order or two of magnitude hotter than the DT plasmas we've spent 60 years trying to sustain. Anyway gently caress Joe Biden and all the cop-hearted Dems who support him.

Like 'how can you measure inspiration in dollars and cents!?' but yea seriously. You get what you pay for and science is no different. You want fusion? Tomorrow? Here's what it'll cost. Want it in ten years? Ok that's a little cheaper. Fun fact both the Manhattan and Apollo projects ate multiple percentages of GDP. One building, the Clinton Engineer works, used 1% of all electricity generated in the COUNTRY to refine the uranium. I mean, you might need a couple years to prime the gradschool pump after years of disinvestment have sent tons of people out of the field and into wall street/data science, but yea, after gross net deduction profit percentage deferment ten percent of the nut, cash, nuclear fusion costs $2,184. Also, gently caress to Joe, I will chain whip his Delaware rear end with in an inch of his life if I ever catch him sucking around West Side Scranton. Via my skills of reasoned debate. We'd still be promising fixes in four years, instead of fixing poo poo today I'm afraid. The tech's hella cool but we never know where the breakthroughs are gonna come from, because if we knew, we'd be there. We could start today to replace 90% of fossil fuel use with renewables if we had the political will... and it would be cheaper, just from a straight resources viewpoint. Problem being the money would be saved by the government instead of giving companies profits.

A Wizard of Goatse posted:Are you posting more about this somewhere cause I wanna read it Uhh not really. It's basically just work. I'm operations, not research, and PhD was three years back. (and my thesis was kinda bullshitty). I mean, I'm familiar enough with the physics and state of the field I could talk about it to a non-expert and teach em something they'd find interesting, but like, I'm not Beautiful Mind-ing or Good Will Hunting-ing this thing. Tunicate posted:yo what's your opinion on General Fusion. I honestly have no idea if their approach is workable but it's so loving metal that I kinda want theirs to be the winner You'll be interested to know they also turned me down for a job (no shade on them like I threw on tri-alpha, I legitimately poo poo my, and several other beds besides, during the interview). It's wild as gently caress, but no wilder than the synchronized explosives they use to make nuclear weapons go supercritical. Conductive walls stabilizing plasma instabilities is basically what I did my research on. Copper and chrome clad steel instead of molten lead, but the only difference would be the conductivity. One thing I can see, and this is the issue with NIF is, the point is not to make more energy than is used to create the reaction but to generate a steady supply of a large amount of power. I guess they must have a plan to get a repetition rate up and somehow exchange heat but I'm too dumb to see it. They also did these explosive compression experiments https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Explosively_pumped_flux_compression_generator, blowing up like, shipping containers in the canadian woods, except it's very possible that I misremember which canadian startup gave that presentation at the conference like, six years ago. Reminds me of the late 90s era when people thought it was cool to call things they didn’t like “gay” and “retarded”. There’s a lot of stuff that people said in the not-so-distant past that most people were okay with then but would be considered heinous today. I think about that sometimes. Does it having been acceptable at the time excuse it? Probably not, but where’s the line where someone deserves to be raked over the coals for it?

xposting from the dnd general thread ==== quote:Do you have a link to support the idea that Biden "spearheaded" the war in Iraq? Here are a couple https://theintercept.com/2020/01/07/joe-biden-iraq-war-history/ Passage of note: quote:Biden’s thought process puts critical hearings he held in 2002 as chair of the Foreign Relations Committee in sharper context. That summer, as the world was focused on the war in Afghanistan, from where the attacks of September 11, 2001, had been launched, Biden sought to begin “a national dialogue” on Iraq. During a series of high-profile hearings, he feigned neutrality, but his earlier questioning of Ritter leaves no doubt where he stood: Iraq had WMDs, and the only way to disarm Iraq with confidence was to depose Saddam Hussein. Biden, given his chairmanship, was a leading voice on foreign policy within the party. https://jacobinmag.com/2020/02/joe-biden-george-bush-foreign-policy-war/ A bit long but the relevant bit here begins around this: quote:So by the time Bush and his British counterpart decided shortly after September 11 that they would use the attacks to go after Iraq, Biden had already helped lay some of the groundwork for their campaign. And despite batting away suggestions of regime change in Iraq as late as November 2001, he soon went all in.
