nice!

does Live ever go on sale? the options seem to be insanely expensive (bc it seems kind of pointless to not get all the VSTs and stuff), educational (I'm not in the academy any more though) and piracy. Like, I want to throw a couple hundy their way and have a legit full copy, is that possible at all?

not in any meaningful way (as in, ni's black friday level discounts). i don't know how strict their educational checks are but an old uni id + edu email might be enough. when i was younger and broke i wouldn't have any qualms about pirating stuff but it's worth noting that there was a cracked version for macos that was found to have a cryptominer in it or something.

i just bought live 10 suite for ~$430 after using some lovely live 9 cracked pos forever-- the trick was to use kvr audio's marketplace. bookmark a search for ableton suite and check it every few days.

Back in 2012 (ugh that was 8 years ago) I got a 25% deal on Live 8, it came with a free upgrade to Live 9.
Highest discount I ever saw was 30%.

bitwig goes on sale for less AND it runs on linux to boot. this is good poo poo for me since i can hook up a basic USB keyboard to my linux laptop and write stuff in bed before expanding on it with my beefy windows desktop+reaktor. i had an easier time getting it to talk to reaktor too, and it supposedly supports MPE better, though seemingly nothing supports MPE /well/

i never used live enough to get really accustomed to its interface, and bitwig seems close enough. being able to use it away from my desk is huge for me actually doing poo poo, but on the other hand i imagine most people aren't idiot linux laptop users like me, even in yospos. still cheaper though!

pirating stuff sucks though. like they'll just be missing convolution reverb or whatever and you'll end up having to gently caress with VMs or WINE because oh look your pirated version of osx software has a keygen that needs windows. and then you can't update. and then you have to worry about malware. pirating software is just a massive pain in the rear end that im all about avoiding if I can. but for $700 or whatever yeah, I guess qpiracy is probably worth my time

id much rather avoid messing with cracks and all that. heavily-discounted legitimate(-ish) serials though? now that's my jam

it goes on sale very rarely. maybe once a year, I think? Itís full fat Professional Recording Software for Grownups despite its chill DJ aesthetics.

if I were to start from scratch Iíd skip the packs. I never use them. just get serum instead if you want to do any synth poo poo. i have live suits and komplete 9 or 10 and most often reach for Serum.

you know you struggled to write a 300 word essay in middle school but by the end of college you struggled to write anything but a 6,000 word essay? same thing

as you grow you learn how to write music, and way too much music. editing and liberal scrapping of bad ideas is most of the hard work

here's a demo of one of the songs i made above. this is the first thing i made. i started with the piano, and strings, then laid down some simple drums, and then just kept adding and removing stuff until i was really happy with it.

add more sections, add a breakdown, a bridge, add more bass, parts for the piece to build up. then take that and find the best 5 minutes in it.

I'm seriously considering writing a VST for something, though.
I want to take input from my MIDI keyboard, then split that to channels 1-16, with each of which should be togglable with MIDI CC commands. Like organ stops, you know.
This will sit between my KB and the main VST I use (which is ARIA player) for when I'm playing poo poo live, so I can switch instruments on an off using something my nano kontrol/ launch control / FL Fire

not super familiar with FL and ARIA but here's how it should be possible:
assuming your MIDI keyboard transmits on channel 1, you need 16 tracks each listening to MIDI channel 1 to receive data from your keyboard
each channel should output to the channel where you have your ARIA VST (I assume it listens on many channels at the same time?).
now the trick is to configure each of those tracks so that it routes the MIDI to the correct instrument in ARIA and that should be somehow doable in FL

after you've done the routing, now you only need to map some keyboard or MIDI CCs for arming the 16 tracks so that you can toggle them on and off - ARIA will just receive incoming notes from the proper tracks and voila you can switch instruments on and off

another way is just to MIDI learn the toggle parameters in ARIA?

but definitely you dont need a VST just to do that, this is all basic DAW routing stuff, should be possible one way or the other

my ableton live lite suffers from a lack of inbuilt instruments. I used to use ďanalogĒ and ďoperatorĒ for all sorts of poo poo

one thing iíd like to know how to do is how to send synth commands to the bass station ii over midi because I know itís possible to program every parameter over midi and so you could not just send notes but everything but I donít know how to create something akin to sending a txt file to the synth over midi.

I do know how to send patch changes to the synth so could pre program the synth patches and have live change patches and also how to record every parameter change on the synth to midi in ableton

also for some reason now my bass station ii wonít connect as midi over usb anymore. it runs off usb power wise so clearly the usb is working but no longer connects as midi 😖

I think the right way to do this in FL is to use a Layer, which you set up to be connected to 16 MidiOuts, each with their output channel/port set to the corresponding instrument in the ARIA VST.
The rear end part of this is that I have two keyboards and a bass foot pedals. So I have to set up 3 layers and 48 midi outs. That's frustrating, but it would probably be the best thing to do.

It's not really a song but there are some cool moments.

One thing I should do, because there have been times I've recorded myself loving around, and I come up with cool bits but I can't recreate it, is also record the MIDI notes and the MIDI CC, because I've now learned ableton records both when you record MIDI, and this way could somewhat be able to recreate the sound perfectly later on.

Same. It's kinda funny that some famous musicians like Brian Eno are totally unapologetic about that being their way of making music, but I wonder how much of a track some artists have in their head before they start, or once they're going how much they need to experiment before they get something that's exactly right.

It's amazingly good given its age, but kinda lacking if you want to do much automation, because most of it is global to a channel, not to individual notes, and messages like note-on only contain a single parameter (velocity) besides the note#. You can get around it, but it's annoying.

My ES-9 arrived and does exactly what I wanted, which is sort of great but now means I've got no excuses. A million acid tracks incoming.

I don't really get how, though? Like, say I'm programming drums and I've got a CC for how open a filter is for the duration of the sample, independent of velocity - if I have a note-on for a long cymbal sample with the filter CC at 80, then a beat later a snare with the filter CC at 100, that opens the filter for both sounds. There's ways round it, but it will always be limited or awkward in ways that it wouldn't be if messages could have multiple parameters.

ahh right you only can automate one CC for one thing at a time.. I somehow thought you can send CC on different channels to the filters for snare and cymbal. in that case you can just record a loop of snare with one filter automation, then a loop of cymbal with another.

i guess that's one of the restrictions of modular - a lot of stuff is passing through the same modules or influencing each other so you can't really think of "snare track" and "cymbal track" but it's all a mish mash of percussion

yeah you can do it that way, just put your different drums or whatever on different tracks/channels, its just annoying to have to.

modular actually makes it easier because you can just use sample-and-hold on stuff you want to 'stick' to a note. Also now I've got my es9 I can put every individual sound through it's own locally sourced artisanal processing chain in Logic which will mean even more fannying about with fx rather than doing something more productive.
