one thing I seem incapable of doing is “writing” music, but I can continue to get better and better by experiment experiment experiment so I know what works and what doesn’t, with the intention of stringing together tried experimental ideas and hopefully minimise stumbling between ideas when playing. I have a bit of an “approach” where building the song up from scratch is what the song is. add kick, get a bass riff going. etc etc

what I have is a novation circuit tracks which is a groove box and it can send out midi and act as a drum machine and sequencer, the moog minitaur is extremely sick, a bit of a one trick pony but it’s an extremely excellent trick, and the hydra synth explorer as a “do most things plus it has keys” synth. it can take midi input and using the arpeggiator definitely gives me endless options.

I got this ultimate ears bluetooth speaker that’s got a pretty decent sound coz I wanted to get as much of this to run on battery, but … the aux input jack is a bit finicky, and the whole device doesn’t seem very serviceable, but worst is that it has a tiny bit of delay. no one mentioned this in any review but spose none of them were using it for performance. I am an idiot. I don’t regret the speaker because it loving cranks for parties etc but an actual battery powered PA would be better I am sure. well idk about bass tbf. I am an idiot

also extremely different idea : wonder how easy or not to use a dev board to make an oscilloscope as a kind of light show thing

cheat by taking also MIDI input and just use the lowest note to determine refresh cycle or whatever the words are that means the thing I am talking about

designing a small light show for live performance is such a fun idea, I like the mini electronics and it’s definitely doable (maybe not oscilloscope but lights yeah) and also a good end goal as a project (rather than being excited to do something but no idea what) but .. I probably won’t

[ASK] me about OS/2 Warp
scopes have a horizontal trigger input that clear the screen and put the cursor on the left. if you could divide your tone by an integer you'd get that many integer worth of cycles per sweep

I suspect proper ones can do some kind of signal analysis to work this out for themselves too, but this idea is just for show anyway

and by using the lowest note to determine how many cycles to show, means it’ll appear relative, always showing a couple cycles regardless of note.

you can get some big led panels at cost effective rates. refresh might end up slow but might not matter.

could look neat

I gave it a like. I already subscribed and clicked the bell.

In other news, I got my first "Pawn Shop Special" guitar. It's an Epiphone Les Paul vintage edition, worth about $300 new, and it was $200 with a hard case. Now, much like Dave Lister, I have a genuine original Les Paul copy.

I dislocated my elbow on my dominant (left) arm and had surgery so much of my music is out the window for a bit.
Time to get into generative VCV I guess, I've got a few modules (befaco, instruo, audible instruments, vult, a couple other bits like chronoblob and plateau so I can follow along with Omri).
Even just pissing around with not-marbles and a bernoulli gate it's amazing how far you can go

Cool! I'm trying to make a music right now.

I recorded my Volcas, then recorded a bass track. I tried to do a guitar track, but I hosed it up, and I'm trying to conjure the motivation to try again.

I want to record some dungeon synth in the enchanted grove in my front yard with my ancient Casio SA-11, but I'm afraid of what the neighbors would think. (I shouldn't be... I've been known to walk my macaw around the neighborhood, so they already know I'm weird.)

I also should leave a copy of my tape in the Little Free Library in the park, but ^^

I also have a cockatoo, and when he's on my shoulder, sometimes he'll start whispering. It's barely audible and sounds totally unhinged. Unfortunately, he stops doing it when I get a recorder too close, so I haven't been able to sample it yet.

edit: Just uploaded this. https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary/pointless-jam-8-27-2023 - volcas, guitar, bass, and no talent.

a hydrasynth. I used to have the original but now have the explorer

getting a midi keyboard was a game changer for sure but it was when I got a hardware synth it was then I really fell in love

not everyone feels this way for sure but at least when it comes to playing music, idk, it really feels that much more like an instrument. perhaps a midi keyboard with good knobs and setup well could also do the same trick but I’ve never managed to arrive there myself

it’s a really good synth for learning too. everything is laid out as separate knobs/sliders and there’s lines connecting them so you can understand the relationships

hosed around with it when a friend picked one up, seems pretty cool. I told myself I'm not allowed to buy anymore synths right now tho. I've been bad.

hahah there’s a lot I like about this synth, but this thing here is a bit of a gimmick

for a synth with 5 envelopes and 5 lfos and a decent mod matrix it’s designed really really well for minimal menu diving etc, and setting up patches quickly and making it do what you want easily

it has polyphonic aftertouch which means you can have a per-voice control over parameters by pressing harder on a particular note. eg pressing harder make a note a bit louder or maybe raises the pitch slightly a bit like bending a string, or bringing in some vibrato or changing the wave shape

sound wise tho I pretty much use it like an analog simulator tho, I pretty much only use traditional wave shapes and plenty of detuning lol

on pc I have arturia collection thing that has a lot of synths and presets and a time ago I pirated the full versions and I think one of the jupiters were on there. a lot of fun to play around for sure, and get hang of synthesis

I used a tool called astrofox. you have to render each track separately and then combine them together in a video editor. now that I have renoise though it seems like a lot of extra work vs just doing a screen recording

always hold off on releasing something until you’re reasonably ready to call it done. once something is out there, you won’t have the same drive to continue iterating on it and will be ready to move on.

on the other hand, don’t obsess over it and try to make it perfect - that will mean it never gets released and that’s possibly the worst case scenario.

mostly I just think it might be tooooo long (came out at six minutes with the customary 2nd loop). also, taking a stab at recomposing a couple of the themes. when I sketch, I tend to use really short intervals and too many notes. comes back to what you said about being too complicated to stick in the listener’s head. that was really good advice btw

I'm trying to do another stupid Volca/guitar/bass jam, and I have a really cool Volca part, but I can't seem to get the bass part right. At least not yet.

I also bought a cheap drone and made a video of it crashing all over my yard for the visuals. I've thought of uploading a video to TikTok one of these days just to see what happens, but I'm old, and new things scare me.
