Chumbawumba4ever97 posted:Is there anything like that out there that anyone here can recommend? It has to be a piano first, and a "sampler" second (I don't even know if sampler is the right word) so I would want it to be full-sized with weighted keys that's practically as good as a real analog piano. I read some good stuff about the Yamaha MODX8 but that's a few years old and I didn't know if there was anything better or newer. jonny p well covered the sampler thing, as for the piano part, 90% of the posts in the piano thread are which electric piano to buy so they'll get you sorted: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=2612320 my own personal advice would just be to buy used since if you or your kid stick with it long enough you're going to want to switch to an acoustic eventually

Minnesota Mixup posted:Finally had some time off work last week and had always wanted to try out some music notation software. I always have random phrases running through my head and was able to build this off of one that popped in to my head last week. Now I need to get a midi controller as it turns out this is a lot of fun and a good creative outlet. you don't have any musical experience beyond this?

Minnesota Mixup posted:I played trumpet through high school so uhh, 18 years ago, which is why I can at least read music. I couldn't tell you what sharps or flats are in a key, but I could start with the first note and very easily figure it out based on how it sounds. if that's the extent of your musical experience then that piece is very impressive. i hate the t-word in general, but if that's really just you banging around in software with whatever sounds right then you've probably got some talent. if piano lessons were a thing you could reasonably do you'd probably get a lot out of them in a pretty short amount of time.

Minnesota Mixup posted:A quick one this time https://soundcloud.com/user-87616560/through-the-desert it seems like most of what you're doing is pretty heavily influenced by game and movie soundtracks, the waltz in particular sounded like the harry potter theme. if you're open to a suggestion, a good way to figure out more about pacing changes in melodies/harmonies would be transcribing themes from soundtracks you like. john williams in particular is a genius at that so you could try to write out some stuff from star wars or whatever just to get a feel for what exactly they're doing. good poo poo tho, enjoying it.

this is all crap i did for the guitar thread like half a year ago when i was just getting back into playing guitar, but i actually kinda like it. i have no idea what i'm doing as a recording engineer and all that but i figured i'd offer it up since i really enjoy everyone else's postings in here. this is an attempt at doing the doc mcstuffins theme in a stax r&b vibe, my daughter was watching at the time and the tune was constantly stuck in my head: https://soundcloud.com/user-283720154/doc_v2/s-ygpwewQef1r?si=adf5ce1a66264847869d6f32f3e15aca i was like, someone suggest a tune i can do and they suggested godzilla from the blue oyster cult so: https://soundcloud.com/user-283720154/godzilla/s-aZmO5yUY2ti?si=4b96ca32fba442e58804d88286a88dcf as a goof since there was so much clapton hate in the thread i tried a john scofield does politician track, probably the weakest offering but: https://soundcloud.com/user-283720154/politician/s-xIcl7gO9sfx?si=e31165a5bba74d2f83e4cbd3e89296c9 anyhow thank you for your consideration, this is all bad but i was doing my best.

I'm looking for an upright and I don't really want to spend much more than 20 grand. so 3 grand is the most you should spend for an upright, if you have a 20 grand budget is a baby or full grand possible with your space? *edit* like, you can spend a lot of money on an early 20th century grotrian upright which are arguably the best uprights, but they aren't nearly as good as a yamaha baby grand. But like I said I really need to get out and look at showrooms. ok, that short of a piano probably isn't worth fixing versus a used full upright in decent repair. i'll have a look tomorrow and see what i see. *edit* unless you have a sentimental attachment then go nuts of course

i dunno if it's still a thing, but there used to be a premium on being self taught in the US and some weird prejudice against taking lessons. this is one of the stupidest things i've ever seen from a country that's p good at coming up with stupid things. in my experience the two things you really need to improve as a musician are a properly functioning and set up instrument and a good teacher. these past five years of having a good teacher have almost entirely revolved around undoing all the lovely habits i picked up from years of having no teacher or, even worse, bad teachers.

I'm most used to doing them in 4/4, and when I try to do it in other time signatures, I can never get them to sound like they're properly looping. odd time signatures generally loop in 2 bar segments, with the accents shifting in the second bar to give a consistent feel like: 1234512345 Stringent fucked around with this message at 07:44 on Sep 9, 2022 |

new toy:![]() ![]() the cone/spider/bridge are trash so i gotta replace them (which is going to cost more than the guitar did), but after that it should sound pretty good. the body is nice and resonant and it didn't go out of tune during shipping on a cold rainy day.
