we got an email from the head of HR about the importance of maintaining "time out of meetings" and "work life balance" with tips like "don't scheduled meetings during lunch time and make sure you have breaks between them" and it's a total loving joke because every single day is almost non stop slammed with meetings from people asking for either a) can you do X or b) actually Y is more urgent we need to discuss it or c) a status update on why X has not been done

We used to have a meeting where a manager would go through charts line by line and would take anywhere from 1-2 hours before we discussed actual useful stuff for 15 minutes, and then she'd hold the scrummasters/POs for another 30 minutes - 1 hour. Lmfao

I guess she noticed no one was showing up so the important stuff is now the first 15 minutes.

yeah my company decided that instead of just not inviting devs to useless meetings they should instead just have us at 5hrs capacity a day

also no meeting {day of the week} always ends up lasting about a month and then they try again with a different day

last week I didn't have a single day without meetings from 11am to 12:30 and then from 1pm to 2pm

most of those were an absolute waste of my time. two were partially wastes of my time. only one was productive and it was a project kickoff call with a customer, so I killed almost fifteen hours blindly nodding along to meetings while reading SA and hoo boy does that ever make me feel like I should give a poo poo about my job

If I have less than three hours worth of meetings on my schedule during any given hour I’m in pretty good shape.

My calendar is a todo list now. I won’t even say I’m gonna send an email if I can’t block 15 minutes. Usually at 8am the next morning.

we try to have staff meetings but its a challenge to get everyone there

and I suggested at the managers meeting that maybe we put up a sign saying "no one on duty for the next 15 minutes for staff meeting" every few weeks or so

and everyone immediately was like "hell no", apparently our business is predicated on being available to the customers every whim at a seconds notice.

that’s when I’m usually most coherent, so I actually prefer morning meetings. in the afternoon i’m usually mentally wrecked or hyper focused on something.

this is legit the way to go when you need uninterrupted focus time. a bunch of the writers I work with do this all the time, since they're working on multiple jobs, and it helps them to switch modes.

tried this, they just started phoning me up asking me to attend

last week I lost my temper after I got phoned 4 times while in the bathroom between a 1.5 hour meeting and a 2 hour meeting and told them that the reason gently caress all progress was being made on this particular project was because it was burning 30% of everyone's time on so many meetings

then the PM added 3 mandatory attendance status updates every week as well because the problem was clearly that we didn't have enough status reports

"can you join the call please? We are waiting" just gently caress right off. I declined it 3 times because its 6pm on a Friday m, what makes you think sending me the invite a 4th time is going to get a different response?

people will not send stupid meeting invites if you have a bunch of appointments like "webex with TAC SR#420691337" and "call with [customer] to replicate bug" stacked throughout your calendar

the "i totally got it yeah, real early on" is going to be listed in the dsm as a distinct coping mechanism. i know like five people who miraculously got a little sick, but not too sick, then got better as soon as everybody realized it was a serious problem

* they didn't actually get covid. they got physiological stress responses from the sudden onset pandemic

tell them to donate blood. the antibody test is free

This happened to me recently, despite my telling someone multiple times I sign off around 3. He created a meeting for 4:45 on a Friday and was upset that I didn't show up. The rescheduled meeting is now 4 this Wednesday. :mrgw:

It won’t stop the stupid meeting invites at all. Not long term. If you’re blocked all of today/tomorrow people will just throw and invite out and hope you can make it work. You still have to be aggressive about declining meetings, and people will guilt trip you like you thought only your mom could.

The good news is that how your spend your time is not their business. And if your manager is willing (and able) to back you up, you can just say no sorry you’re busy and leave it at that.

i used to do this. i'd block a few hours in the morning, i'd block my lunch hours, and i'd block the last 30 minutes of my day so people couldn't book me into meetings that would inevitably keep me late.

now i work at a place where i have a few hours of meetings per week so i don't need to bother
