I've just discovered the work of @davetroy
His take on Musk's takeover of Twitter is well-researched, completely at odds with conventional assumptions, and deeply alarming:

Troy's other perspectives on geopolitics and disinformation are also eye-opening.

Is there anything to this?

well, it certainly would explain a lot.

looking at it from a historical materialist perspective though, it’s unlikely the powers of capital would allow something like this to happen. otherwise forums would still exist outside of SA, *chans would be far more ubiquitous than they are now, and geocities and other things like it would still exist.

That doesn't exactly make sense with Musk doing everything in his power to try and get out of the deal

Toilet Rascal

lost me at "Musk is likely to join forces with Trump’s Truth Social and Kanye West’s Parler to try to control much of the information space". those two control zero of the information space right now and that's not likely to change, especially if trump is let back on twitter

(actually lost me earlier when he said the various active wars continuing for a year or two will lead to cryptocurrency displacing the dollar, but this is funnier)

yeah he also appears to be ascribing much more cleverness and dimensions of chess to musk's motivations than he deserves. I don't believe for a second that the delaware chancery court clown show was actually a clever plan to negotiate a buyout price with the guy who hasn't run twitter in years and the guy he fired right after the deal closed

this is the big thing
musk never had any real plans or strategy, he is just coasting on the momentum of capital

lol at this attempt to portray musk as some 4d chess galaxy brain. tired of this thing where people squint and rationalize away the fact that billionaires are just dumb asses throwing their wealth all over the place while claiming to be having “long term vision” when it is clear its just poo poo they thought up while high at burning man

my boss is doing something creative for once:

pay us extra if we work in the office.
working in the office full time rather than once or twice a week amounts to a 25% raise.

and he hired an actual chef and spent tens of thousands of euros on an industrial kitchen so we can get free lunches and snacks

i'm still considering working from home as much as possible, because I don't want to catch covid on the subway, and my home office has a bigger screen, better mouse and keyboard etc

I've never really stopped going to the office and I've taken public transportation for the entirety of the pandemic and honestly, if you wear a good mask, I don't think the tram or metro is very risky. The risk comes from colleagues who show up at work with the "flu" or a "cold"

oh, it's going to work. absolutely.

the money scales with seniority and job type, and some people get more of a 'supplement' (that's what they're calling it) because they're allowed to have more work from home days to start with.

for example, i'm supposed to spend 40% of my time in the office. I alternate weeks of four and five days. so that means that if i spend all my time in the office, i get compensation for 2.5(days per week)*4.2 (weeks per month)*€125 (my RTO compensation amount). that's 1300 euros, about 800 after tax

some people can only work from home 20% of the time, so they only get compensated for one day per week. and they may only get €65 or €80 because they're considered lower level. that's still a couple hundred euros for those guys, plus the free lunch and snacks that can add up to a couple hundred a month.

i think most people are just going to switch to eating full hot meals at the office for lunch so they don't need to cook dinner anymore when they get home.

we do have an unlimited supply of covid tests at the office, but everyone but me has stopped using them. i still get one every time i come in, because why the hell not.
so yeah, catching covid from my colleagues is the real risk
