we pretty much can't wfh here bc we can neither run our game and tools though remote desktop or have people install terabytes of garbage on their home PCs (for those who even have one beefy enough) one of the canada office is evaluating a streaming solution that could work so maybe we'll be able to wfh during the next pandemic

Jonny 290 posted:the insistence on running all traffic through a VPN so they can fire you for clicking fb during work hours is going to blow up so many routers for us its bc they are super paranoid of leaks and stuff they are making everyone here setup VPN access to be ready in case the french government makes wfh mandatory and they might let us take our machines home (unless they can get some third party streaming solution up and running I guess)

trying my remote desktop setup for if (when) we have to wfh and it turns out that theres a magic group policy option to enable something called RemoteFX that makes remote desktop do video streaming and our poo poo can run at a perfectly usable 30 fps through that yet i was still told today that if we wfh we'd pretty much have to take our PCs home until they can get citrix running otherwise we would barely be able to work i wonder if like not one single computer janitor in our entire 16k employee company knew about that RemoteFX stuff lol (trying to make my xbox controller work through that makes my remote pc reboot tho, thx microsoft)

we're at pretty much mandatory wfh for people with kids here since schools will be closed starting Monday and we expect to have to go full wfh at any time now the logistics are a mess tho: - using remote desktop with remotefx steaming works well but if the govt forces us to fully close offices it might mean we can't even have a support person at the office to do things like rebooting a crashed pc (like mine freezes or bsod once a day lately, yay) - some people with kids don't think that having their kids home but without access to the family pc most of the time (if they need it to work remotely) will work out (and what if your signifcant other also needs a pc to wfh?) - taking our pc homes means that people without a good internet connection are boned when it comes to upgrading our branches data from perforce since they are huge (our game's map is based on parametric procedural generation with manual edits layered on top, the procedural generation runs every night and shits out a massive amount of data into perforce) - corporate hasn't greenlighted taking our machines home anyway

current wfh status: rdp gets disconnected literally every 3 minutes it only does this for some people tho so its not bc the VPN is making GBS threads the bed (which it also is so rdp is super slow between the disconnects)

here we have to print and fill a form to justify being outside and we can get fined 135€ if we are outside without it even though im a shutin and have no problem staying home I find it very stressful that can't just freely go outside if I want to (even though talking a walk is actually permitted)

I have coffee but my home coffee machine (a lovely nespresso pod thing) that I didnt use in a while turns out to be broken I can't even attempt to repair it myself bc in a giant gently caress you move they went out of their way to use screws with ovoid shaped heads that I can't possibly force open even with pliers

Brass Hand posted:I was supposed to buy a desk and then borrow my work monitors for however long this lasted but now they have announced the office is actually shut so welp! where I work we had a lot of people who had to borrow equipment from work because they couldn't work correctly through remote desktop (like 3d artists) and they organized it so that a couple people where on the premises and people would come in a different time to pick up the stuff they needed so that there would be like max 5 people in at any time then they deployed citrix to allow almost everyone to be able to work remotely without having their work PC at home so they did this all over again early this week for people to bring their PC back to the office I mean it requires some organization but our studio (and pretty much all of ubisoft, really) were able to transition to full remote work without as much fuss as we feared
