head of our organization: We encourage everyone who can, to work from home

our departmental hr: if you're going to follow the suggestion to work from home, you must fill out this long form justifying why you can, then get it approved and signed off by 3 levels of management

way to put hurdles in the way of people trying to prevent disease

whole team got up in arms about the importance of social distancing and flattening the growth curve on covid-19 in response to hearing that our department would not be allowing everyone to wfh because "it looks bad if people aren't in the office"

this is despite the larger organization urging it

"Just wash your hands, you will be fine. You guys are young and idealistic, and you're all about 'power to the people', but you have to balance that with the needs of the organization"

all of our jobs can be done fine from home

what is wrong with people

loving c levels honestly value "it looks bad" over "a bunch of my employees died"

I think it's sunk cost regret like "why are we paying so much rent?" unfortunately I think a lot of hot desking is going to come out the other end of this crisis

i think it's just some boomer thing like, if I can't talk to a person face to face, then how is anything going to get done? but yeah, i did make the joke that yeah, it's a national emergency, but it's still important to have that facetime

other boomer thing: "I drive an hour into the city from the sticks where I live on an acre, so i'm already putting myself at risk. for those of you already living in the city, you're not at any more risk by coming into the office!"

update: much to the (I imagine) chagrin of the people saying "there's only 5 cases in the state, people are overreacting, we'll be fine" there was a confirmed case found in my office building. now no one has to come in

still have to get your wfh form approved and signed though

In San Francisco the water comes straight from the Yosemite valley and it's so pure they don't even filter it. Just add chlorine and pump it into the pipes. People here are still going nuts for the bottled stuff.

a buncha pages back, but I don't remember the water in SF being that good. but i was definitely in SV recently and the water was terrible. i scoffed at my hotel charging for bottled water but then when i tasted the bitter, over-chlorinated stuff coming out of the tap, I was tempted. does the peninsula/south bay have the same water supply?

i remember being like, man this would be hard to get used to if i ever lived here
