If you have any contrarians on your social media this is a good time to tell them to donate blood (or components)

I think it's weird cause blood centers are like the cleanest place I know and you're not allowed to be there if you're sick anyway.

so this economy now has this huge swath of people getting laid off soon or no work to do

and this other swath of people who work in virus-affected sectors who are completely swamped and understaffed (anything to do with health care, logistics, delivery, etc)

and we're def in a recession (though it's not official until retrospectively looking back 2 quarters later)

computer touching is somewhere in both worlds, some firms are gonna layoff and some firms are super-well positioned (eg those working in home delivery or teleconference stuff)

there's a bag of shredded money beside my office desk to commemorate the occasion. There was a tradition of passing it on to whoever caused a big outage but I decided to just leave it on display instead (some people might not take it in stride)

Been working more productively these past two weeks than ever. I think I "know how to work from home."

did you know that the whole thing originally started because a japanese guy made a fearmongering facebook post saying "all japanese toilet paper comes from china, better buy yours now so you get one made before coronavirus" and that started a run on it in japan, which then spread to australia and then the rest of the world, and the japanese guy has been arrested for causing a panic but now it's just self-sustaining?
Planet Money was saying that the first reports of shortage were in Hong Kong

I think there's a legit reason to expect a short-term shortage though - a bunch of short-term consumer (retail store) demand compared with reduced office supply (truck-delivered) demand. Those are not the same source, so the shelves go empty when everyone is also trying to stock-up weeks worth at the same time.

Like there's something real there, but then the overexposure in the panic makes it a bit worse.

I think it's also something to do with the average density of the places people live, it's kind of a meaningless metric anyway, since just traveling a longer distance than someone else isn't a risk factor, it's about the variety of number of people you are in close contact with. Distance traveled or change in distance traveled might be OK proxies for that when comparing within NYC or LA or rural North Dakota, but I doubt they are useful between them.
So I think the Google data linked earlier defines travel not in terms of miles but in terms of total visits to various destinations, and the compares with baseline percentage in the same region.

Like if you look at Texas vs California you can see that Texas had normal numbers of visits to the grocery store/park for one or two more weeks than CA did, coinciding with the lockdown order delays.

The IHME projections that Trump and co keep touting are so incredibly stupid. They have uncertainties that decrease with time, which is such obvious horseshit. It looks like they just have some simple model that predicts what the mean number of deaths per day is then applies a static percentage uncertainty to each number, so as you get to smaller numbers over time the uncertainties get really small too, which is just flat out wrong and not how you apply the uncertainties at all. The error is cumulative per day and so if you're uncertain at the beginning, you're going to be way off at the end.

The correct thing to do, if you don't want to do any math, is to just do a monte-carlo, but that is very clearly not what they did. Why do I even do my job when I could apparently get away with pulling poo poo like this.
The purpose of these models isn't to inform or be accurate hth

we have first past the post voting combined with winner take all. this naturally forces politics into a bifurcated system. there are examples out there where this isn't the case but you need significant cultural norms to overcome it. the fact we immediately split into a two-party system and stayed there for centuries pretty much means we're stuck with it unless we completely overhaul how votes are tallied and distribute power
Oh it gets better than that. Bifurcated parties + primaries + pervasive gerrymandering encourage a very clear "us and them" form of politics. Their loss is your gain. That's why America was virtually alone in "politicizing" whether or not you "believed in coronavirus".

Contrast this with reasonable systems using reasonable voting systems - everyone is so polite because they need to work with eachother and form coalitions to govern rather than win primaries - and it actually matters to get support of voters deciding their second/third choice. You know, compromising and stuff.

To be clear representative systems also have more colorful characters within the government itself. They're just not the ones forming the majority coalitions.

It helps to have other rules too. In Germany (where things are decidedly more boring) they require a "constructive vote of no confidence", ie if you're getting rid of the government you have to simultaneously propose a replacement. In Italy this isn't true, so you have an incentive for grandstanding somewhat analogous to how Republican legislators act in California (pure obstructionism).

For a time I thought I had a poor sense of smell. Most things just seemed to have a neutral smell unless they were directly under my nose.

But there were a few specific things I could seem to detect much better than others. Like cat pee, or alcohol, or cigarettes - all really strong and repulsive. If you're sitting across the table with me I can't tell if you haven't showered in a couple days but your glass of wine will be mildly unpleasant.

And I find gasoline repulsive in any amount.
