End feels in sight. It's conceivably a matter of weeks before vaccines open up to everyone, and from then only a few more weeks till there's a "demand problem"

As of this week Americans are now 50 times more likely to receive a dose of the vaccine than get a new infection, and that number is still growing. Last month it was 10x.

Maybe not in this thread recently but yes, people are saying exactly this. Because "the government didn't care about us" or because "some people don't want the vaccine" or because of wishful thinking that the dose would otherwise be wasted

Read the QCS thread or the CSPAM thread for some of that

The missing context to making sense of it is that some people are in states with wildly misguided rollout plans. From what I can tell in New York it is still illegal to give extra shots to ineligible people rather than throw them away -- obviously in that absurd situation you want to wink wink claim eligibility.

By contrast in my county there are massive standby lines at every distribution point hoping to achieve an extra vaccine, teachers and essential workers are in the current eligibility tier, all appointments are getting booked within an hour of being posted, and most locations aren't even scheduling appointments except for second doses due to lack of supply.

another fun fact: air bags in european model cars deploy more softly than american models, lowering the risk of concussion, broken noses, and other trauma associated with the deployment. this is because the american regulations require that the airbags protect and immobilize someone who has chosen to not wear their seatbelt. the american airbags must deploy much more rapidly than the european ones, and with greater force, because they might be the only restraining device in play. it's pretty loving hard for a sensor-laden exploding pyrotechnic canvas bag to hold a 250-pound american in place as effectively as a 50 cent piece of nylon webbing.

bafflingly, american motor companies lobbied the hell out of congress to get the regulations written this way. my best guess is that they knew that americans would continue to not wear seatbelts, and if as a result they were ejected from the car before the airbag fully deployed, they would accuse the car company of making defective airbags or something.

european regulators simply said "obviously if the person doesn't wear their seatbelt they've chosen to be stupid, and the car shouldn't make concessions to them that will hurt people who are taking their safety seriously."

it was the last straw for me as the donation experience kept getting worse (seemed like the aching in my arms that would set in after two hours in the recliner, as they take platelets out of your blood and then put your blood back into you, was getting worse every time) and it was already a big hassle since i basically had to drive 45 minutes one-way to get to the one place around here that's setup to take platelet donations, and i was also sick of them hounding me on the phone to come in.
It's fairly normal to take more than one unit at a time. I found that I could do two units pretty reliably, but whenever we'd try for three I'd start to feel really badly towards the end. Likely that's what was happening here - you were feeling worse because they were taking more because it was going on longer.

They can do that too, it's sort of a separate question. Imputed rent taxes are more "landlords pay tax on rental income, but landlords who receive in-kind benefit of free rent aren't paying taxes on it, so fix that"

cults are interesting because they hijack the innate human pattern finding ability by laying out complex and sometimes subtle patterns that all point to why you need to abandon your life and dedicate it to the cult. Americans are acutely susceptible to them too because we don’t have any critical thinking skills or ability to do any real research or truth finding and are also fiercely individualistic and have had our egos perpetually inflated for our entire lives. so then people feel really smart and good for figuring out the puzzle, or having it explained to them, and seek out that feeling more and more getting further entrenched in the mythology until they are completely lost and unmoored from reality.

it’s sad
I don't think it's the highly praised well-nurtured types that are the most likely to dive into cults

this could very well not turn out the way you might hope due to Simpson’s paradox (if I recall correctly). you can have more vaccinated people dying than unvaccinated and vaccination could still be the right thing to do. example, most deaths are in the above 65 age bracket. but in the US most states have 80% or more seniors vaccinated. if 60% of the deaths are vaxxed that’s clearly still better to be vaccinated if you understand it’s lower than the proportion of population vaccinated but you have to really explain how to people and they might not want to bother to learn.
Turns out that even with Simpson's paradox effects the case is still obvious, the vaccines are just that good.
