or buy and expense one, depending on which was more convenient. owns.

also i'm really tortured about whether i should require students to have video on during our "class" sessions.

i don't want to invade their privacy, and i know that many of them are in uncertain living situations right now, may not have fast internet, might have to share space with family members, etc.

but

it's so much better when everyone can see each other. a disembodied voice and a list of names is not a replacement for a classroom. people are already socially isolated and it's just getting worse and people need to talk to one another and feel like they're still connected. i am getting like 10% of the student engagement that i normally get in person; nobody asks questions any more, people can't chat with one another on the side. plus i hate lecturing to a blank screen in my apartment.

it blows

videoconferencing latency absolutely murders anybody asking impromptu questions. In real life, you open your mouth, start to make a sound, then if someone else has already started talking you back off. over a typical video link you don't actually notice them talking in time to stop.

so people end up talking over each other, then try to awkwardly figure out who should speak first, then nobody talks after that unless they're specifically called upon because they don't want to deal with that hassle. The more people involved, the quieter it gets.

biggest tip is to separate your fun space from your work space

if you're using the same computer for work as you do for gaming then you're going to have a hard time keeping things separate mentally. if you have a separate work computer on a separate desk you can go and sit down in your work chair (that you only sit in when you're working) and put yourself in a work headspace instead of a gently caress-around-and-have-fun headspace.

for some reason the developers of realism mods never quite figure out that in the real world, the radioman can turn dials/press buttons on a keypad to input those values, instead of using a mouse to click a picture of them on a computer screen.

Strict rent control encourages landlords to put the price up the maximum amount they're allowed to by default, because they can always drop it back later if it's now too high but they can't increase it by more than that if it's too low.

It also encourages landlords to invent ways to boot tenants out as a roundabout way to increase rent by more than what's allowed.

It can be useful as a short-term policy to limit the immediate effects of a housing crunch, but the goal should be to solve the underlying housing issue to the point where rent control is no longer needed. Trying to sustain it long-term results in something utterly dysfunctional.
