anybody that still voluntarily goes on a cruise in this hellworld, with this corona, and this global climate shift, and this unemployment, and this exploitation of brown people, deserves whatever they get on said cruise. And they should not be able to spread their idiot illness on others. thus i propose a government subsidy to bring all cruises down to $99 and mandatory 1 year quarantines on said megaboat.

other things, like 'whitelist' and 'blacklist' i can get due to the whole subconscious white=good black=bad thing and also from a l10n perspective of 'oh yeah these are kinda colloquial terms that not everyone from everywhere will immediately understand like "allow" vs "block"'

anyway it'd be nice if the government could do something instead of this lead-from-behind PR crap

"master" in and of itself is not an offensive term. there's no implied power dynamic in saying you mastered the guitar. describing a controller/executor system as a "master and slave" system is problematic.

jenkins does bother me with this. i have to go out of my way to explain what the differences in types of nodes are without using their terminology.

at least redis changed it (and i updated our configs and then realized we were on too old a version and then broke production but that's another story)

i just don't think that therapy is going to be sufficient for me to find happiness again (and i won't do psych meds). Only time and hard work will get me out of this one.

(a) the user that mentioned that the goal is not just 'increasing happiness' (which a good long term end-goal still) is correct. i have a stated list of goals and it helps to be reminded of the tangible aspects of it.
(b) i completely get the resistance to meds. in my case, very long-term stress has literally caused neurological changes for which medication helps, and i specifically try to stay on the lowest dosages possible- i don't actually take antidepressants, but the stuff i'm on almost instantly got me to a point where i actually have more energy in the day to give a drat (because, like you, i also have a hard time looking at the world and believing it ever could get better at this point). it's there to be used appropriately for a situation, ideally to get your brain back on track enough that you don't need meds anymore. like antibiotics: you take it when you need it until you don't (under medical supervision with as many factors as possible accounted for).

also it is completely underrated what simple breath meditation will do (no woo, just purely breathing and trying to really feel it- it's surprising, but you start to realize that you have some control over 'settling down' that our entire culture has more or less made sure we never figure out).

a-loving-men to the above post. i spent most of my childhood/early adulthood learning the lesson that not everybody acts in good faith, and not everybody is even equipped to know what that means- a huge amount of people behave like the above not because they're making some intentional effort to but because their entire subculture reinforces it. and you know what? it's okay to cut those people off.

it sucks, but i hope that people embrace being estranged from the dregs of humanity around them, even if they're family. giving people passes is what brought us to this point where anyone saying the right things can hide under the veil of 'actually, maybe their intentions aren't evil even if we're 99.999% sure they are, better err on the side of caution despite their actions'. i think that culture of unaccountability + constantly being trained that you should Always Give The Benefit Of The Doubt No Matter What starts small, in families and in communities. and look where that got us, a situation that is largely intractable as long as we keep pretending that the intentions we project onto others (through filters that we let the other define, largely) are more important than their actions.
