I don't know what a treasury yield curve is but I was listening to NPR maybe in October-November and some guy was saying it's going to hit a threshold or cross with a line in a few months.

Basically, bonds are a... gurantee from a sovreign nation to pay....

Basically, if I'm the government and you gave me 50 dollars in 1980, then I would give you 100 dollars in the year 2000, or something like that....

What we are seeing are that bonds are basically returning extremely low interest.

The more that people buy, the lower the rates get. Also there is a general concern within the economic world of just where our economic growth is going to happen in the next 10-20-30 years.

To me it seems like it will be renewables and hydrogen products, rather than just pure unadulterated growth.

I am confident that if the first world really wants to, we can get to 0 emissions. But there will be sacrifices... (Air travel, tourism, brownouts perhaps...)

I think the real question will be... if we end up transitioning to Hydrogen+natural gas (it can be blended) then to pure Hydrogen, just who exactly is going to lead the world's economy. If Russia+Saudi Arabia is able to bankrupt the US shale gas producers. Then that leaves only one major supplier for China and the EU.

I expect they would transition their pipeline network to utilize Hydrogen. There is no way the U.S. can compete.

Hydrogen could be liquified and sent over the sea just like natural gas. But from what I understand (not a chemical engineer) the boil off and liquification is much more finicky compared to LNG.

Hydrogen isn't a fuel for energy, it's a form of storage. Hydrogen is meaningless as a pure energy source as almost all hydrogen is produced by reforming natural gas, and provides less energy (with more emissions) than the natural gas that supplied it. The only purpose of energetic hydrogen (vs the many chemical/industrial uses) is in small automobiles to replace petroleum, since natural gas powertrains cannot be easily/cheaply miniaturized (though are still used in trucks and buses). Otherwise the natural gas source is better, and for hydrogen imports it is first transported as gas or lng before being converted at the destination.

When times are good, investing your money in good things makes sense. You can get a lot of money for that. Investing in the government of the US? Stupid, they won't pay much. But-- it's safe. The investments in the US are backed by the full faith and credit of the US, which is the safest investment you can make. The worse things get in the market, the more people invest in the US. The more people invest in the US, the less the US pays out in interest, to the point where the US does not give interest at all, and yes, even charges interest for you to invest with them. We are at that point, which means the music has stopped and everyone needs to sit down.

That was talking about the yield curve inverting, where short-term debt instruments have higher yields than long-term instruments. That's bad, and indicative of an incoming recession.

This is worse, and indicative that the economy just stroked the gently caress out.

Well that's not good at all. Even worse! Now that you mention it, yes that's what he said.

Just talked to my friend and he said he sold a lot of stock a few weeks ago. I said that probably wasn't the best idea because he's 38 and now he has to pay taxes on them and he could have ridden it out.

Yeah but doesn't that lease payment not equal a 1:1 payment that you'd make on a normal car? Like, after 36 months, you'd have paid more off on the regular car instead of the lease?

He did end the lease by the way. And bought a brand new Subaru Crosstrek.
