Long Beach is hard because delaying that build-up of the course is basically impossible.

Long Beach is extra-difficult because of the convention center and arena in the middle of the track. Even if you can close down the streets for a weekend, you can't block access to the venues for the other events that may be taking place there.

The convention center houses pretty much everything that isn't Indycar or IMSA. All the support paddocks, the vendors, the expo. It's also a crucial go-between for spectators to get from one end of the track to the other.

The streets can be closed whenever, and you could put the other paddocks elsewhere if push came to shove. But without being able to take over the convention center the race can't happen.

Aren't the pit boxes for Indycars considerably longer than NASCAR's?

Yes, they need the clearance due to the smaller turning radius. NASCAR pit boxes are ideally 25 feet, Indycar pitboxes are 40+ feet with Indy having 47ft boxes.

It was an OK race for the circumstances. Still had some bold moves, but a short race and we didn't get the semi-pack racing we like to see at Texas due to the remnants of the traction compound killing the grip outside the bottom groove. Plus, it was the first race so a lot of guys were happy to just bring it home.

I was expecting much worse, so I'm happy for what we got.

They do still post 30 minute highlights - and to be fair when you can edit around what you know is going to happen, 30 minutes is probably enough to cover almost any race.

I did the math. Though the race broadcast window is 2½ hours, and 2 hours of that is for the race itself, the fact is that there was only 87 minutes of full-screen race broadcast for the Saturday race on NBCSN. If you cut out some of the filler in there for cautions, packaged segments, interviews, etc, you're maybe closer to 65-75 minutes of actual on-track racing product that you'd care to give your undivided attention to.

Giving each race 30 minutes is more than enough to cover the flow and the major beats, I think. It's a good compromise for not giving everyone free access to the full races anymore.
