There's sci-fi anime I guess. That Gundam thing is cool, I've seen Zeta Gundam. Trigun is cooler than Cowboy Bebop imo.

Godmars is very Star Wars-y, with it's evil space emperor with a black mask and the hero with psychic powers and stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-hDE2SCY2Y

It's very impressive just how much work some Gundam series put into the attempted realism of their space colonies and giant robots. It's very cool. They briefly make me believe that all that stuff is feasible and I forget the absolute absurdity of them doing normal infantry fighting but with giant robots. When they toss realism it gets real hit and miss, but G Gundam was still something amazing. Planetes is an even more realistic take on space, but the anime is a little lame, since it turns the whole thing into more of a corporate office thing, while the manga was much more about living out in a spaceship as a space janitor. Kinda like living out on the frontier, everybody's out there in the inhospitable place to do a job for money, even though some of them dream of there being something more to the experience. And of course, the author later went from telling a story of wanting to escape the world to forge a new life to wanting to escape the [viking] world to forge a [not viking] life. There's also Outlaw Star, which I barely remember and still feels a bit like a fever dream to me, but it was a very good and crazy fever dream, so I'm not even sure I want to revisit it and disrupt what memory I have of it all. I'm very sure there was an alien who was a small potted cactus that they spent a whole episode trying to find.

Those Galaxy of Adventures shorts are really well animated and deserve to be made into fullblown adaptations of the OT. I would watch the poo poo out of that show if someone made it.

Lensman exists if you want an anime adaptation of sci-fi. There was also an anime of Starship Troopers a decade before the Verhoeven one.

Way before anyone knew the term "anime" my friend got a movie called "Toward the Terra" for his birthday. We watched it and had no idea what was even going on and it made us all feel kind of sick and bad. Years later I realized we had watched a anime. However I still have no goddamn idea what's going on in that movie and anime makes me sick.

ItBreathes posted:Star Wars is a by-the-numbers fantasy story. What's so wildly anime about it? Luke and Leia "accidental" incest. Giant tentacle monster. Yoda is actually a 13 year old girl trapped in the body of a 900 year old muppet. Constantly whining protagonist that can't do anything. Lots of embarrassing situations where Luke walks in on Leia taking a bath and Leia shouting "pervert" at him and chasing him around. Jets of blood shooting out of noses at the sight of giant honkers. Sound of lightsabers igniting is actually the sound of missiles being shot from giant robots or spaceships. Beach episode involving a big butthole monster in the dune sea. There is a giant ape. thankfully the prequels are not anime at all and can be watched safely.

Dash Rendar posted:animes are largely bythenumbers fantasies I mean, this is true, but not what makes anime, 'anime'. Luke doesn't spend a tension building amount of time focusing his force powers, nobody talks about the power of friendship, no Sephiroth. The post above this however, is conclusive. I was busy at work and just not thinking.

It's just a media industry like any other. It can be good or bad, although it sure does slip into porn a lot more easily. I don't really watch anime much, but I did wind up ditching most western comics in favor of manga because of how it has a bunch more creator-driven original content instead of telling winding stories about 50+ year old characters that inevitably go nowhere because they need to be quickly trashed when the time comes for the next crossover and reshuffle. Sadly, there's not many space sci-fi stories. They're really taken by jrpg-pastiche fantasy worlds.

ItBreathes posted:Is Lain sci-fi, or does it just borrow elements of sci-fi to be a thing unto itself? It's part sci-fi, part psychological. The degrees to which are based on the viewer's own interpretation of events. It's amazing just how relevant it has managed to stay over the last 20 years- I'd say it's message and theming is even more relevant in today's society than it was back in the early days of the internet.
