If the hardware there failed, they had already found some new, indistinguishable from magic scientific breakthrough where they could continue to exist in some other form as pure data or radio waves or light or something crazy like that, and it would just be a door closing (and only for the other side, they'd still be able to reach out if they had any desire to, which they probably wouldn't).
