DC Murderverse posted:hypothetically if they have like, one golfer, one referee (or whatever their equivalent is) and one cameraperson per hole and like maybe one camera man how many people would you really need to run a golf tournament? just stretch it out over weeks, not like anyone else is doing anything How do you propose people get to the golf course? Passener air travel is pretty much non-existent right now, so it would have to be chartered flights with very few people and that would be prohibitively expensive. Even if you did go that route, everyone would have to be in isolation for two weeks. Even long-distance driving probably isn't going to be encouraged, and may also require isolation if crossing state lines. So do you start excluding people from out of the country? The state? Those not in easy (say, under 2 hour) driving distance that doesn't cross any county lines? Where is that line going to be drawn? There's a shitload more to sporting events than just the actual event itself.

Passenger flights are still going. There's still tons of flights. It'd be, like, maybe slightly harder to get people around but not all that much. https://www.airport-ohare.com/departures.php?day=tomorrow

As someone who lives under a flight path to O'Hare, there are still plenty of flights happening. Hell, I was supposed to fly on May 4th and AA hasn't cancelled my flight. We're cancelling though, no way are we flying right now.

Airlines are flying empty or nearly empty airplanes around so they can keep their slots at airports. It's hugely wasteful but the slots are valuable because under normal conditions there isn't enough capacity at important airports to meet demand, so airlines want to hold onto them. There are usually rules that if an airline doesn't take advantage of their slots enough the coordinator will give them to somebody else. So even though passenger demand is down 96%, the popular and important airports are still flying like 80% of their normal routes. Smaller less desirable airports probably have massively fewer flights happening.

I had a cousin who had to fly from DC to Salt Lake after her dad got hospitalized and she had to take care of her mom with MS. She was the only person on the plane. This was two weeks ago.

grack posted:I'm unaware of any situation where travelling to take part in/work at a golf tournament could be considered "necessary travel". Just gunna keep doubling down, eh? Go look online, you can just book. There is no restriction on domestic travel. The only restrictions are for foreign travel, and honestly those restrictions are barely there (You can just go to one of 13 airports where you probably were going to fly into anyway). Foreign nationals will have a harder time, though there are exemptions. You said you couldn't fly people in because they weren't flying planes, they are. You implied you need some sort of necessary travel permit, you don't. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not make poo poo up about restrictions and policy right now. It's really important people realize what they can or can't do. Spreading incorrect information is actively dangerous. I don't give a poo poo or think its a particularly good idea to run golf right now but please be well informed.

grack posted:I'm unaware of any situation where travelling to take part in/work at a golf tournament could be considered "necessary travel". You said there were no planes and they would have to charter private ones. When it was pointed out there are plenty of planes flying around that are basically empty you said yes, but there are travel restrictions, which are non existent. What are you even talking about? There are plenty of reasons why they couldn't/shouldn't do this, but you are not making any sense. Just stop.

Fine, gently caress it, I'm a horrendous human being who was wrong. Can anyone then please explain how holding a PGA event is, in any way, shape or form, a good idea? What justification exists for holding the tournament? Edit: Also, I'm in Canada. WE have domestic travel restrictions, I naively assumed that the US would do it as well. grack fucked around with this message at 04:18 on Apr 22, 2020 |
