I loved watching it because, the women’s divisions at least, was super young and hopefully that will get more girls hyped on skateboarding. Another thing I’ve been thinking about is what is Chinese skateboarding going to look like in 2024? China is going to take it extremely seriously. What does skateboarding look like when there is that kind of weight behind being the best at it?

He seems to be very bummed by 1) The entire concept of competition skating (imo not valid, it's existed for a long time now beside, and at times subsidizing, skate team/video culture and industry without harming it) 2) the world at large not appreciating the mastery and skill needed to land tricks at a competition consistent level (valid, this is something on the level of the more difficult gymnastics events but people see someone fall and are thinking they're bad at it)

I still boot up Session for a bit whenever there's an update. Prior to the THPS remaster it got me through many a long boring MS Teams meeting. Although it's getting better with each iteration I feel like it needs some sorta focus before it can take off. It's cool just coming up with lines and trying stuff, but for me it needs some sorta scoring thing to beat, at minimum. Which ironically is why I struggle to get back into Steep because I can't reset my progress and start from scratch jesus gently caress. At least with THPS I was able to trick (lol) the Cloud saves by deleting local ones and 'uploading' the non-existent local ones

Pretty fun video! It made me realize I haven't started the game up since spring, when prior to that I put at least 30 minutes into it dang near every day. I think the issue is I can't just fire it up and cruise until something catches my eye, I have to think about what I want to skate and then pick a map for it. On the other hand I did buy a real board and after a couple weeks teaching myself to push around I have infinitely more respect for everyone that does this stuff, standing on something that can fling out from under you at the slightest lapse is real intimidating.

SquirrelGrip posted:new update is good, make sure you turn on the physics sim option and pedestrians. mod tool is updated as well if you want a street snowboarding experience yeah, i've already gotten through the brunt of the added story mode content on default settings. now i'm playing on another character trying out the more hardcore settings and manual flip catch and stuff. the physics sim animations really improve the look of the game but they still need a little tweaking for sure. and peds sound neat but my PC already struggles with the game as is so i'm good just skating in a deserted NYC/philly i've tried the mod tool and some modded levels a couple of times but every time i try to download a popular level, the download limit has been hit and i lose interest

I haven't booted up Session in a while, might reinstall and have a play around. I'm still sad that THPS remake seems to have been a one off. Hope Shredders is good, I could do with something to replace Steep

hey i managed to get some modded levels in session. managed to do this at one of the skater xl levels, a 540 flip to... i dunno, some kinda weird lipslide grinds are a lot easier to do now after the update, so if you had trouble before, it's worth another shot now https://i.imgur.com/Kj8Wk0W.mp4 EDIT: oh yeah they also tweaked some stuff about the replay editor, and now you don't have to scroll through things like FOV and depth of field one by one

how is skaterXL's replay editor in general? that was always my favorite part of skate. but the one in session has just never quite hit the same level of usability. i like that more things are keyframable (especially speed), but the animations aren't good enough to be able to zoom in on and either they took out hard cuts or hid them so well i couldn't find them last time i booted it up. i haven't even tried skaterXL but if it has a better editor i might finally pick it up.

It's been many months since I played skater xl, so can't say if they've changed it. But as of the 1.0 release the replay editor felt much better than anything the EA skate games ever had. It can still get fussy but there are many fewer instances where you get a poo poo key frame and the camera goes bonkers. There's also a bunch of mods to tweak replay creation if it still makes you mad.

Testing out the Shredders and it feels fun so far. It has an actual storyline* and it feels pretty polished. Controls feel great. Holding and releasing RT ollies and rb/lb are for grabs. LT is for landing stabilization. Sticks for rotations and moving. You can control rotation speed by pre-rotating before trick. Max speed rotations are bit too much, but you don't have to use them. Doing gaps seems to unlock stuff. All and all pretty fun so far. *You're an aspiring youtuber with 50 likes getting discovered. Pretty cringe, but fun.

i'm liking the full release of session but also it really really doesn't feel like an actual full release. so it goes when you have to appeal to a publisher i guess. at least the SF map is really fun to skate around in. i hope they can patch up some of the issues soon. also i hope they get a new modeler or two so there's not just three total hairstyles for characters

When Session works, it's cool as hell, but it's so janky, and there's some choices they made that baffle me. Like, reverting in a manual means you have to swap directions on the stick, like how impossibles don't wrap around the foot at all, like how boardslides sometimes just don't work, like how there's no "reset rotation" option for the object dropper. And oh my god, missions need attention. I cannot pass this the first stage of this daewon song "ollie up and flip on this rock and trick out" mission even though I have perfectly done the ollie up, frontside flip near the top of the rock, hardflip off the wood back down to the park three dozen times - and yet, I have passed so many smaller missions even though I bailed the landing (or even outright missed the trick.) Similarly, I beat the philly jam in beta on my first try by a LOT, yet in the full I can't get more than a 5.5. The game hasn't changed that much. I shouldn't be doing this much worse. When the game works, it's fantastic. I loving love doing casper slides over small ledges, and I love how it feels to finally land a trick you've been warring with, but mannnn soon as Skate 4 drops (or, lol, skater xl ever updates into a real game on console) I'm probably not going to touch it again.

Looks like the skating part hasn't changed one single bit. Not sure if that's good or bad.. it felt like skate 3 was getting a bit heavy on the thumbstick gymnastics so hopefully they've trimmed down the fat on that.

i recently just finished up the historical challenges in session and got 100% cheevos for it! i totally admit i cheesed the manual catch story mode one, because there's no way i could do the jams on manual catch. i just don't have the reflexes for that
