there is something sweet about melancholy, especially that of another.

though in the moment it may bring pain it reminds us that we are humans, capable of empathy, and that is a good thing. a comforting thing, because if i can feel someone else's pain, another can perhaps feel mine.

When I was a small child in the 70s, I had a toy box that looked like pac-man called Mr. Chuckles. It was just a round, yellow, plastic orb that hinged in the middle and had two eyes. Mr Chuckles was large enough for me to get in and close the lid, so when the afternoon sun would stream down through my bedroom window, a sunbeam would strike Mr. Chuckles and he would glow. I would take my toys out of Mr. Chuckles, climb in, lower the lid and just sit inside the all encompassing, omnidirectional glow that filled his hollow body. It was so extremely peaceful and beautiful in there that even now, over 40 years later that when times get tough I still want to crawl inside Mr. Chuckles to see and feel that beautiful, safe light.

dang - some great replies here, enjoyed them all and am glad to have you all as my posting pals!!

and if you have any more thoughts on comforting things then please keep on sharing!

gonna add that warm clothes straight out of a dryer on a cold day is good

and the feeling of making someone you like feel good about themselves is a great one imo
