Austria and Italy done goofed when they did not commit to finishing off Turkey. Now that UK and Russia have apparently decided Germany is worth more to them alive than dead (at least for now), it looks like it's curtains for Italy. This turn will decide whether they will be the next to fall - or their allies. I'm voting Italy next out, if only because unlike A-H they have no way to actually set up a coherent front line.

The main reason is that their diplomacy hasn't been successful and now AI are the 2 part in a 2v4. They were doing fine vs RT, which isn't a favorable matchup for them so good job. Problem one is that Germany went south and England let them, when AI really needed Germany to help them vs Russia instead. Italy eating France was probably the right move even if it let up pressure on Turkey, but then they really needed England to go after Germany or Russia after and that didn't happen either. You never know when someone might diplomance their way out of a tough spot but Italy effectively giving up on the med seems like it's going to be very hard to recover from. Neither they nor Austria are in a position where anyone would obviously want their help instead of taking their stuff.

Actually, based on how things were going in game, I'd sincerely argue that they were too committed to finishing off Turkey. To make a long story short, a lot of their movements were (according to information I received through various sources of admittedly questionable authenticity) based largely or almost entirely on eliminating Turkey to the detriment of their efforts elsewhere. Not to mention that Turkey was in a strong defensive position that required the commitment of a lot of AI's forces to try and break through, and when pressure started coming in from the north they could still harass Austrian forces without really losing any defensive capabilities. Granted, they could (and nearly did) break through at one point, but the story behind that going south involves many details that I am currently not privy to.

Phew! The game is still moving faster than my work schedule can keep up with. Here's another update to get us caught up! Fall 1908 Not a tonne of action up north, this turn. UK and Russia both hold. Germany uses the bounce strategy to cover their three SCs on that coastline. But there's a WHOLE lot of action happening in Central Europe. Russia and the UK both move on A-H and Italy respectively to cut their supports. Germany moves into Tyrolia. A-H moves into Bohemia. Importantly for Germany, they retake Munich for the fall. Germany F Bel - Hol (failed) A Ber S Boh - Mun A Boh - Mun F Kie - Hol (failed) A Pie - Tyr In the Iberian Peninsula, the UK keeps moving their armies forward. They advance on the Italian Peninsula with the Ottoman Empire's support, who themselves have claimed Tunisia. A-H and Italy, meanwhile, keep the Ionian Sea clear. That said, with Naples going to A-H and Tunisia to the Ottomans, Italy is down two more SCs. They burn one of their northern units and one of their homefront units. Crosspost. You know you want to convoy into Ankara. You know you do. This game allows you to have one long-term ally since the victory condition is to own slightly over half the supply centers. Stabbing at the earliest opportunity isn't always the best decision since it could limit your options for future expansion. Sadly, I don't think Russia will become enough of a juggernaut by stealing Ankara at this stage.

I have no idea what Italy is trying to accomplish with that northern army. Meanwhile, England had Belgium dead to rights, but just let Germany keep it, but I don't expect that attitude to last for long, because Italy will be dead soon and they'll have to attack someone else.

If they're expecting a knife into the back of the Ottoman's it's probably not gonna come until one of the others are dead such that they can refocus their front a little. The North Sea area looks to be a defensive hold as a just-in-case measure between the two super powers. It's cold there atm, but I expect it to start going hot if Germany gets enough breathing room from any of the four people breathing down their necks or if the UK and Russia find Central or Southern Europe to be handled.

Russia stabbing the Turks at this point would cement a loss for them I think. Yeah, they'll get a couple of SCs. England will eat Italy and possibly the entire med, putting them at least perilously close to a solo. If England get into the Eastern Med and take Everyone needs to be very careful of how much stuff they let England take from here on, now that they've broken into the Med. Keeping Germany, Russia and Turkey alive is likely going to be mandatory for anyone who wants a part of the win. In a couple of turns it's going to be difficult to attack either without creating an opening for England to take the solo, unless AIT completely swap tack and turn on the brits to kick them out. So: I'm predicting an EGRT 4-way at this point. Austria might manage to weasel their way in by threatening a throw, but I think GRT can deal with them while keeping England in check. If GRT fail to stick together then they fall together and England gets a rare solo. [E:] Well, I guess England-as-superpower isn't inevitable yet. GR have a window to be aggressive in the Atlantic before England get any new builds out of the Med, in the same way that AIT could still kick England out of the Med or at least keep them from taking anything in Italy. It's just that all those parties have been hesitant to do anything of the sort before in this game. Xerophyte fucked around with this message at 10:06 on Apr 16, 2020 |

I do want to point out to people who are going "well you should obviously do this" in the thread (which I completely understand, I'd be doing the same in your positions), the current fact of the matter is that Italy and Austria have gone into what I shall refer to as Maximum Chaos Mode, where their actions are no longer motivated by long-term gain but rather trying to drag down as many people as they can with them. Any long term plans are a bit...unfeasible given those circumstances, since while I can tell you there is plenty of plotting going on in the world, a lot of it is being thrown out of whack by the current scenario.

Spring 1909 The United Kingdom continues to position itself. It's MID fleet moves north to apply itself to the stand-off in the North Atlantic. Meanwhile, its fleets in the Mediterranean make absolutely sure Austria-Hungary continues to take SCs from Italy. Marseilles' move into Piedmont proves troublesome for Germany. They are pushed out of Tyrolia by the Austro-Hungarian/Italian advance. With no where to retreat to, their army is destroyed. Well there goes Italy. Germany seems to be the one with potential to affect the Scandinavia situation the most so I guess UK and Russia (I imagine in a state of cold war by now) will both be courting it? If that is the case and they can get some kind of alliance, I suspect A-H will be the next one for the chop with Turkey moving in from the south. anilEhilated fucked around with this message at 18:56 on Apr 17, 2020 |

Things are going great for England. If they want to be mean, they guarantee 2 new builds (Rome and Belgium) and can secure sea dominance. The only counter I see is Turkey using its Tunis fleet to go to WES and force England to waste a lot of time re-securing its southern border. Russia is probably +1 supply center this turn, and can even sneak into Ankara again to get a 2nd. Going from 8 to 10 will allow it to match England, and Turkey is too fleet heavy to effectively fight back. The goal is to get to 18, and well... gobbling up Austria and Turkey seems like a decent path to 18.

Huh. England going north with the mid-atlantic fleet was really unexpected to me, I would definitely have pushed hard for italy and counted on getting new builds to keep me safe in case of GR trying anything. Settling for 2 fleets in the med means they can't hold a line and wont be able to hold onto a piece of italy or tunis unless someone lets them. I guess they're confident in either austria both surviving and being continually helpful or being able to ship down more fleets before turkey can evict them.

Fall 1909 The Atlantic Cold War warms up. Both Russia and UK make a play for the Norwegian Sea resulting in a bounce. On the continent, British cooperation ensures that Germany maintains its defense against Italy and Austria-Hungary. Their actions elsewhere ensure Italy is defeated this round. Their movement into Rome is self-explanatory, but the UK also supported A-H into Venice to deliver the killing blow. Austria isn't long for the world, so while I would normally reserve a tell-all post until they departed, the only thing that would change their fate is the remaining nations somehow agreeing that now is the time to propose and accept a draw.CirclMastr posted:Some forum-goers know each other better than others, and it could lead to alliances forming based on knowing the player behind the nation rather than the nations themselves. I said this because after I signed up, my good friend Danaru also signed up, and I was all ready to be best bros with him no matter what. When the game started and identities were anonymous, I put that aside for the sake of sportsmanship/adhering to the setup. Negotiations began, and when I brought up the idea of a Lepanto or variant thereof to Austria (specifically a fun one that implies a stab, with Ven-Tri in Spring 01, but Tri-Alb in Fall 01 to give Italy/Austria a good position to contest the balkans), Danaru immediately realized that it was the kind of rear end in a top hat move that characterized me. We confirmed our identities, and swore to ride or die together. Thus, the constant cooperation between Italy and Austria, no matter how many people here in the thread were sure that a stab was coming any turn now. Also since I was familiar with the game and Danaru had never played before, a lot of the early turns had me writing orders for both nations. Things were going well - not perfectly, but well - but I sadly doomed the both of us with some key misplays. The French Connection France, somehow, got itself 3 builds in 1901, completely uncontested. This made France appear very dangerous. It colored every negotiation for quite some time. It also made me overlook Russia (more on that later) until it was too late to do anything about them. But France was a good neighbor to me. We agreed to keep Piedmont a DMZ, and they focused entirely on England and Germany while Austria and I pushed into the Balkans. The value of that was highlighted once France was stabbed by, well, everyone, and England proved itself a much less considerate neighbor in Iberia than France had ever been. I will say that it was predicated on France basically saying "I need to attack Germany so I'm sending an army into Piedmont and then Tyrolia, I hope you're okay with that." Given that from Tyrolia it would be absurdly simple to attack Venice OR Trieste if France decided Germany was too tough to crack, I was not okay with it. Hence the Piedmont bounce, followed by the invasion of Marseilles. The (Tur)key Misplay Once Danaru and I had the Balkans more or less wrapped up, I wanted to leverage that hard into cracking Turkey. Too often had I seen a Turkey left alive, judged harmless, only for them to sweep back up to prominence (as they are doing now). Unfortunately, I was overly concerned with not attacking Russia while doing so, as their focus was on Scandinavia and I didn't want to antagonize them into forming the classic Juggernaut. This was my critical misplay, as I see it. If Italy-Austria had secured Ukraine and Sevastopol, it not only would have made cracking Turkey easier but would have blunted Russia's ability to form the Juggernaut that I feared would end us (spoiler alert: they totally formed the classic Juggernaut and ended us). Once Russia secured Scandinavia, they had the choice of sharing the prize Turkey with two other countries, earning them 1 or 2 SCs at best, or forming the Juggernaut and enjoying much more of Europe. Between the early focus on France and the later focus on Turkey, I took my eyes off the actual threat: a Russia with no enemies. Blind Sally is a Jerk Blind Sally is Germany. Several times he came to Danaru and I about a Central European alliance, which we entertained. It pretty quickly became clear that Germany was selling our group discussion to Russia. It didn't matter overmuch, blunting some attacks that had a chance of success otherwise, but by then I had already misplayed. When it became clear that the Italian-Austrian alliance had no friends left in the world, we decided to enact Operation: gently caress You Blind Sally and attack Germany without subtlety or regard for our own survival.

SUMMARY OF ALL RUNNING BETS: So it hasn't really made a difference yet, but Diplomacy can sometimes speed up later in the game as you approach the "one player can unilaterally wipe someone else off the map" levels, so new rule: All votes must by in prior to the Spring 1911 update (i.e., two days from now).
