Holy crap is Shido's Palace long. Luckily it doesn't feel like a slog like Okumura's but working on this palace the last two (real world) evenings I have only gotten two of the letters so far...and I think I need three more? So far I don't mind this palace other than the length, but it is a let down after how amazing, beautiful, and unique that is the Casino Palace. I loved that palace so much I would sometimes just stop, pan the camera around taking in the atmosphere while listening to the absolutely baller theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0DZ3jFi2Gk I could play this theme on repeat all goddamn day.

It's weird because that Palace never really bothered me, even on Vanilla. Kanehsiro's and Okumura's felt like way more of a slog, partly because the scenery and music are just not very exciting to go with it. I think it would have been better if they'd forced you to take a day off for that Palace though. A forced reset would help to make it less draining mentally.

Yeah the forced rests were an interesting addition and I would have liked them to drive the point home about how planning a heist takes time. Scoping out the treasure and preparing an entry and exit route could have been split into 2-3 forced rests for each palace IMO.

Shido and Okumura’s palaces in vanilla were so long and taxing on the soul Shido’s is still “not great” in Royal And I honestly don’t remember what was different about Kaneshiro’s

Just based on what I've played so far here are my Palaces ranked. And I won't spoiler tag because it looks like everyone reading this thread has finished Persona 5 besides me lol 1. Sae's Casino I mentioned in my previous post everything I love about this palace. 2. Kamoshida's Castle A great introduction to the game, and the palace that told me I was in for something very different, and very special with Persona 5 3. Madarame's Museum Some great puzzles and beautiful scenery. I loved the puzzles where you warped into the paintings themselves 4. Futaba's Pyramid First off, goddamn the emotional sequence at the end with Futaba's Mother but also this palace had some good puzzles, and I am a sucker for the Egyptian tomb-raiding theme. Was also cool how there was a small town sequence, even if there wasn't much there. And now....the bad palaces 5. Shido's Ship This palace seems like it should be way better than it is. At least so far. I mean it is on a cruise ship, but so far I spend most of my time running around identical hallways and rooms. Again, I haven't finished this one yet so we'll see if it improves for me! 6. Kaneshiro's Bank Its a bank and honestly this palace was just dull, I don't even remember what happened except the kind-of-annoying key puzzle at the end. I did enjoy how Kaneshiro fights you with a mechanical piggy bank though. 8. Okumura's Space Port Based on the name alone, this should have been an amazing palace from a design perspective. A Sci-Fi theme palace? Yes please! Instead what I get is room after room of grey corridors, an assembly line puzzle, and office worker robots. Yawn. The theme song is also annoying, and yes the Okumura boss fight sucks since I (and it seems, everyone else) had to cheese it in order to win. I'll update this list once i actually finish Royal (in another month?) because I still have the final palace, and (hopefully) the third semester!

Casino would be top tier for the music alone, but then the dungeon itself is great and you have a special guest. Easily the high point of the base game, and they drat well meant for it to be.

And I won't spoiler tag because it looks like everyone reading this thread has finished Persona 5 besides me lol Also, here are how each boss was different in the base game compared to Royal: Kamoshida was much harder in Vanilla. He didn't have a helper coming in with the volleyball that you could attack, so you have to deal with the volleyball spike through the whole fight. It also feels like he generally hit harder and had more health in Vanilla; I had to level a bit more to get Ann Tarunda there even with Slime, whereas in Royal I kinda breezed through around level 9. Madarame didn't have his clone phase (which was generally pretty easy). You do the painting, he goes into his solo phase and you whack him as much as you can til he goes back into the painting form, rinse and repeat. The first time he goes back into the paintings you can use the black paint to give him weaknesses. Because you deal with the painting form more compared to Royal (and they obviously have more health to compensate), pushing Ryuji to 17 for Rampage is more helpful here. Kaneshiro is less scripted and you actually have to kill Piggytron. The first part is largely the same, but the game doesn't force you to give up an item or anything. You just have to Guard through Piggytron, then after he starts rolling again, Kaneshiro is an attackable target on top, and it'll stop the spin if you deal enough damage and then you can keep wailing on Piggytron. Once he's alone he's basically a walkover, he doesn't have his guards. Wakaba is pretty similar? She's pretty easy in either version, I think Royal just dumbed her down a bit. You have to go through the ballista phase at least twice I think to really whittle her health away. Okumura was actually much easier in Vanilla. His robot waves are the same, but they don't have as much health. The Big Bang robot is the main fight (no Harubot here), so you're mainly dealing with the Hunger status and Big Bang attack. Sae is pretty easy either way, I'm not sure she changes in any meaningful way. Shido is one fight, no forced second round with Joker. Again the fight is pretty similar, you just had to beat him down properly in Vanilla with less scripted events.

She was really easy but I think Royal reframed it to be more about Futaba's inner battle than about physically fighting the cognitive monster, and I liked that.

Solaris 2.0 posted:If you do, could you make a general Persona thread? I thought about this for a bit and realized that since I have mod powers, and this thread's relatively slow anyway, it might be a good idea to convert this thread into a general Persona thread. Anyone have any objections to that? I'll probably post in the Megaten/RPG threads as well if we do, just so that people know there's a place to come specifically talk about Persona games and spin-offs (though Strikers is welcome to keep its own thread especially right as it's coming out). Might be a good idea since it can sometimes dominate the Megaten thread.

Yes please, especially with nocturne and 5 coming out it would help with the megaten thread.

I’ll keep posting here as I play through Royal and then Persona 4. I don’t want to junk up the Strikers thread since it’s new.

Now that I think about it, I'm feeling mildly ambitious and willing to create an actual OP for a general Persona thread. If Arist is okay with it I can close this thread and make a new general thread once I have the OP done.

Sounds good. I would have been willing to convert this thread or make a new one, but if you're already working on one then that's no skin off my nose.

Fighting Shido, I hate that cheap JRPG trick where you spend 30mins on a boss fight carefully chipping his health down only to have him one shot kill you (despite being full health) because you didn’t guard when he “charged up” That poo poo was cheap and lovely in the 90s and it isn’t any more fun to deal with in 2021. At least on normal, have it so he knocks your health to one or something.

New Persona megathread is here: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3959827 The OP is mostly done, but I'll be adding info about spin-offs and FAQs for new players when I get a chance.
