Thanks, guys. If I understand correctly, I should buy horses with the highest Speed rating possible (so definitely not sumpter horses) for everyone in my army. I take it you stop getting extra bonuses to speed once you have more horses than troops?

Can anyone explain how clan roles work? I get that your companions will get better at the associated skills, but I can't get the roles to be assigned permanently. I leave the clan screen, come back, and the roles are all reset to None except maybe one or two. Is it related to a skill that I need to level up first?

e: regarding money, seems you can easily make a ton of it just raiding, especially caravans. If workshops only make 200 a day I don't really see the point

One of my villages is getting raided constantly, it's a steady stream of parties converging on it. I assume it's a vicious circle of the AI being attracted by the lack of militia, which is also what prevents the militia from building up?

On one hand, it's a great source of loot and renown without having to leave my castle's general area. On the other hand, it's kind of dumb. Are you supposed to be able to do something about this? If I went away for five seconds I'd have 10,000 enemies raiding that village until there are no villagers left.

Catpain Slack posted:

Scrolling through a role removes it from whomever is currently assigned it. You can circumvent this by clicking the role and assigning it directly from the dropdown menu.

HiroProtagonist posted:

Get a couple companions in your party, go to the village and delegate them to parties. They'll stay in the general area, doing quests and killing poo poo. It's actually pretty hands off, they even do their own recruiting so long as you can maintain their bankroll, but that's all automatic assuming you have the funds.

Eventually poo poo should stabilize, but do keep in mind you'll have to recreate the parties if the leader ends up being captured once they're released, if so. Sometimes that can land them in an extremely hostile area upon release and they'll just keep getting taken prisoner following you putting them in charge again just by virtue of being a single leader without an army, so you'll have to trundle over there, pick them up, bring them back to a safe area and then recreate the party if they do end up having that happen. Normally that's only the case if they get captured by a hostile kingdom, but even a little bit too far into enemy territory can render the AI functionally unable to get out without getting captured again.

Thanks, I'm going to try this. If I give them some of my best troops and make sure their party is big enough, they should do fine, right? I'll just go get some more recruits to replace my losses.

e: the rep boosts in particular are tempting, I hate doing the Family Feud and bandit holdout quests myself because I suck at them and I end up with worse rep than when I started

I'm really confused what their game design idea was, making lineage mechanics where you can have children to play as once you die... in a game where one faction will end up dominating within the first few in-game years.

When I started this I was worried I'd die of old age before accomplishing anything, now I'm more concerned the AI is going to beat the game before I even graduate from fighting bandits. Have they said anything about toning down the intensity of the wars? From Warband I remember everything stuck in a constant stalemate with the player having to be the deciding factor most of the time, which makes a lot more sense from the perspective of a game.

I haven't noticed this in my current game, which is also my first game. I'm getting to the point where I'm a force to be reckoned with, party size 150, and not much has changed except a city or castle changing hands here and there. Maybe you've just been unlucky.

Phlegmish

I've noticed enemy clumps sometimes doing nothing as I ride ahead and pepper them with arrows, but I assume that's intended behavior. Probably in real life during battles you didn't have an idiot riding out on his own to troll the opponents

Phlegmish
Jul 2, 2011

I've also noticed larger armies running away from me. Yes, I will annihilate them because I have elite troops and they have 99% peasants + it's the standard difficulty setting, but they're not supposed to know that.

Phlegmish
Jul 2, 2011

The core gameplay is at least as addictive as Warband's, but yeah, a lot of the rest is still very barebones. For example, the companions basically have no personality. When I picked up Lliari the Healer, I saw that she was Devious and thought "oh man a devious healer I wonder what's going to happen", and nothing of course. Maybe some quest resolutions change if you give her her own party and that's it. You can't really interact with them.

I actually have no problem with the idea of the AI being competent enough to occasionally accomplish things on their own, without the player's input, it's just the execution that's lacking in this case.

My main criticism would be how very similar it is to Warband and how it has many of the same issues. At this point in the game I'm just endlessly hunting down and massacring enemy armies made up of 90% recruits. Three days later the same guy will just be back with another garbage army. I wish they would tweak battles so they would be a little more challenging for the player, but also have more meaningful long-term consequences.

Of course right after I say the battles are easy, my entire party gets slaughtered. Is it weird that I don't mind? I kind of like reconstructing my army.

Just to be clear, max party size is linked to the Leadership skill (other than your clan renown), right?

What's the indispensable siege weapon? I don't want to spend two years building them all. On the other hand, I attacked a well-garrisoned city (200 militia + 200 garrison) without building anything, and my guys just got slaughtered as soon as they reached the top of the ladder. I ain't even mad, that's what would happen in real life.
