Of course, God directly taking people to Heaven is in most ways functionally identical to death, so it's more Suicide by God than Suicide by Cop.

I took "civil conflict would be preferable to the slow dictatorship of liberal democracy" to mean that they wanted christians to rise up and overthrow the government. But I think you're right, they think the end times are here and want the rapture to happen.

White people of course flipped their poo poo, because how dare they not be allowed to climb one special rock that they really really wanted to climb.

A bunch of people rushed to hike it before it was closed, and on the final day there were about a thousand tourists, and the usual news crews capturing this moment. Tons of tourists complaining, but this one stood out to me.

But what I can't and never will understand is how dedicated to their hate they seem to be. Linehan lost his job, his wife, his twitter, and any sort of professional respect he may have earned over a long career just because he hates trans women. He had multiple opportunities to wind back the hate, he could just have stopped tweeting about it and instead tweeted about cheese sandwiches or something. But no, he and Rowling and others of their ilk seem to make it their entire life to hate trans people. Why? Surely you have other things to do in your day. Or even why be so hateful so often?

Even most racists have learned that it is not helpful to yell "I hate the loving N******s" 7 times a day out your window at nobody in particular. Yet that was what Linehan was doing, and now JK Rowling. Fair enough, you are a hatelful middle aged bigot. It's a sad fact but the world is full of them. Just shut the gently caress up about it, and go on with your day. There's no need to harrass and dehumanize normal boring law abiding trans folk every second of their lives.
For Rowling, it's the Hollywood bubble. No one in real life ever says she's wrong to her face, so when people online criticize her, they must all be trolls. I guarantee that if someone approached her in an elevator or something, she'd hem and haw and then write something vicious later because she's a coward. Just look at how quickly she shut up when Stephen King (another rich/famous person, aka someone whose opinion she actually cares about) disagreed with her.

Linehan is a weird one because he seems addicted to attention. Like, actually psychologically addicted, to the point where it's ruined his life. He's a poo poo person and I don't feel particularly bad for him, but dude should probably get some therapy. If things had gone differently and he'd gotten internet famous for being rabidly anti-Semitic or something instead of a transphobe, I have no doubt he'd be posting memes about the International Cabal of Jews or how white Christians are the real persecuted minority or whatever. He doesn't care whose life he ruins as long as he gets those sweet sweet mentions.

I don't know enough about media history to say for sure, but I'm sure there were TV/radio/movie personalities in the 50s and 60s who went all in on the segregation thing and saw their careers crash and burn as well.

Does he say "well I have done my research, and found several articles/papers telling me X. I guess that Y is wrong."?

No, the motherfucker goes online to ask people "Hey guys, I believe Y, but all the scientific research I am doing is telling me X. Please find me something that asys Y, so I can keep on believing it and tell myself and others that said belief is based in science."

It's not good.

It's because people constantly ask them for sources for their bullshit, so they know that sources = good thing, but don't grasp the larger scientific method. To them it's "I know I'm right, so when I find something that backs me, it proves it" vs "I should go into this with a hypothesis and see if the research proves or disproves it." They're the same kind of people who will argue to the death that scientific theories are "just opinions" so we should give their crackpot explanations equal weight.

Cultural appropriation is inherently negative. This is when you misuse an element of cultural significance, like a Native American head dress or a Scottish clan tartan or Pacific Islander face tattoos. Anything that contains personal or tribal history as part of its expression. Things that would be a crime if the appropriated party had any ability to enforce it, like how stolen valor or even copying the Burberry pattern without a license is very illegal.

Wearing a kimono or sharing a lovely recipe for chai is not appropriation, because that's "just" formalwear and a hot drink, but it can very much contribute to commodification, which is a different harmful thing.

The example I like to give is sweat lodge ceremonies. As actual religious ceremonies, they take years of training and knowledge. But do a google search for "sweat lodge" and you'll see tons of websites offering the True Native Experience from white new age gurus. They're charging thousands of dollars for their bullshit, and in some cases it leads to death because they have no idea what they're doing. A lot of tribes are understandably pissed that people are commercializing their sacred rituals as a spa experience.

I know Sociology is seen as a fluff subject, but it's the first class that taught me about inequality and social issues and different governments and other things that really should have been incorporated into a high school curriculum. Haha, so fun fact, I know Atlas personally/professionally. He's one of the most obnoxious people I've ever worked with, and incredibly thick-headed. I rang him up once to tell him that some numbering was off in his paper I was reviewing, and none of the images matched up. It would have taken 5 minutes to tell me which photos went with which captions so that I could fix it, but instead he took 15 minutes to yell at me about how I just didn't understand his work and he'd already corrected it and he couldn't believe I was wasting his time. He finished with "I don't know why you're refusing to understand me!" before hanging up.

He also likes to play colleagues off of each other to get what he wants. On my project, I was the "bad guy" and my coworker was the "good guy" and it got cartoonishly out of hand. He rejected everything I did, so my coworker and I agreed that it was just easier to pretend she was doing everything. I'd send my part over to her and she'd send it to him, and he'd send back these emails complimenting her work and calling her the most amazing person he'd ever worked with. It really weirded us both out.

I could go on and on with stories. The project lasted for 2 years, and was easily the worst experience I've had with academia.
