It’s a bit of a myth with the no exits highway. There were exits, because the traffic on the highway was mixed between east and west vehicles, and local cars would travel freely on and off the highway. The rest stops were clearly demarcated as east or west only. Fun part was also that if you were NATO military personnel, and got stopped by the east german police, you were required to decline any conversation and demand a soviet officer’s presence, because technically the west never recognized east Germany. The eastern original border crossing is still there as a museum with original buildings and a few guard towers. The western crossing, which was much smaller, is now reduced to a single building and the original open buildings where you’d enter initially, and its like a kilometer away from the eastern border crossing. And a fun fact - the actual east-west border was a stripe of land, sometimes as wide as few hundred meters, stretching from the sea up north to Bavaria and then to the east, to the Czechoslovakian border. Since it was relatively free from human influence (ignoring the deforestation and land mines, natch), the entire 1400 km border is now a national park, and one of Europe’s largest.

The wall was mostly on DDR Ground, so in some places on the west side you’d have a sidewalk and a strip of grass and then the wall, but the strip of grass was already in East Berlin. So you’d sometimes wait for your west german bus, and there’d be east german soldiers with guns next to you guarding workers who’d do maintenance job on the outer wall. Also, since the city rail tracks were laid before the split, some west Berlin subway trains would route through ghost stations in East Berlin, manned only by border guards. Conversely, East German subway trains running through West Berlin would have armed guards on board to stop passengers from getting silly ideas.

It’s not exactly always dubbing - in western Europe you’d get and still do proper dubbing, meaning every character gets a unique voice, usually from a unique actor (sometimes they’d do multiple voices, for an old and young character, for example). What you get in eastern Europe is voice-over translation - there’s a single person reading the lines (in some countries you get a male and female voice). There’s no effort to match mouth movements and you hear the original audio track underneath. The voice people doing this by are actually really great professionals. Voice-over translation, unless you’ve grown up with it, seems absolutely horrid, but honestly, it gets the job done cheaply and I have fond memories of it. It comes from the time when TV channels wouldn’t have time, budget or technology for subtitles.
