Forgive me if this is a stupid question:

But the US seems to be the only country that does this stupid poo poo with the flag.

I know it has a flag that aesthetically lends itself to this kind of colour swap business, but out here in the rest of the world we also have our versions of fuckwits who fetishize law enforcement/military etc. and our versions of those fuckwits are generally just as nationalistic, so would love to wear a flag that also says "I love the people oppressing poors and foreigners" in a different way. But as far as I know, there are no regional variations on that US one stripe of a particular colour.

Are there other nations versions of this sort of thing?

Mixing the national flag with some other symbolism to make a sociopolitical statement does seem to be a pretty American thing, so I would guess it's something other countries pickup from us. A more common example would be adding the rainbow flag for gay rights, which a lot of countries do nowadays.

So the original thin blue line symbol was just a blue line on a black field, and it's been around for a few decades at least. But I don't remember seeing it incorporated into the flag until really the blue lives matter stuff started up. In general there's been a shift in fascist imagery within military and police since 9-11 and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Punisher logo, the white/black/blue color scheme, and the flag are all relatively new fascist imagery, so it's probably just a matter of your own homegrown Nazis picking up on it and reproducing it for their own countries. A brief search does pull up a couple of other examples of national flags in the thin blue line style, including Israel, Britain, and Canada.

You can find people with different politics at all income levels, they just don't get fawning media coverage over how mature they are about it. One of the consistent splits in left/right politics is gender after all.

Lack of political power and agency also makes politics into a luxury for other people to worry about, and the country is full of people just getting by enough that they aren't willing to start fights with family and neighbors they rely on over political issues. If you're seeing less and less tolerance for that stuff, it's because people are getting more desperate and the right has engendered a cult of lunatics who cannot shut the gently caress up about their politics so people cannot ignore it.

Karen became normalized when a whole bunch of fragile white women kept getting caught on camera calling the cops on black people for existing. Mocking ignorant racists is good. Making it about misogyny completely misses the point. The reason why it's Karen and not Kyle is because men usually don't call the cops to do their dirty work, they just straight up try to kill them themselves. That's not abusing privilege, that's just straight up being a murderous violent rear end in a top hat.

Yeah, we know what the original context was. The point is that just because something started out as a joke about something very specific that deserved to be called out, doesn't mean it stayed there when picked up by the culture at large which carries it's own biases. Remember that old Chris Rock bit about black people vs. n-words, and how an n-word to him was a specific lovely kind of black person? And then white people latched onto that joke from a black man talking about his own community as an excuse to use the n-word and be lovely racists because just like Chris they didn't mean all black people, just the lovely ones.

We live in a misogynistic culture, and it doesn't matter that a term is created and used rightfully by an oppressed group against one with more power. When it gets out of that bubble, bigots are going to grab it and run in their specific direction because that's what bigots do. I don't think the Karen meme is so fundamentally misogynistic at this point as to be useless, but there are version of it out there that are and they need to be stamped down. No only as a push back against misogyny, but because the original point about fragile white women attacking black people for existing is getting lost in otherwise mundane "call the manager jokes."

Well there's some tentative evidence that the majority of people who are sexually attracted to prepubescent children never act on it because they know it's damaging and thus highly immoral. I guess it's not fair to shelve those people in with outright sexual predators?

Pedovore still sounds like some sort of specialized cannibal though. Clearly we need to start calling these cultists fishermen after Albert Fish. I see no confusion or complications as a result of this.

The only place I've seen anyone unironically say this about medieval life is A World Lit Only by Fire, which is one of the worst and least accurate pop history books in the world but has unfortunately colored a lot of popular medieval history "knowledge" because it ended up assigned reading in a lot of college courses. Other claims include

* Medieval peasants had no sense of time and never went much further than their home village, which could lead to them becoming hopelessly lost if they ever left town.

* The focus on religion removed the medieval man's sense of self as an individual human, causing them to frolic naked in the summer due to having no shame.

* Cannibalism was a regular occurrence, as was poverty so great that you were left naked in an empty hut any time you had a bad year from selling everything you owned.

So basically the medieval countryside was just full of roving bands of nude cannibals. It also had one point where he took a medieval joke about a peasant fainting at the smell of perfume in a city and needing to be revived by waving a shovel of dung under his nose as actual fact that he repeated.

This book makes a great gift for any history nerds in your life. It's like the Birdemic of history texts.

And stereotype or not, black people do get an extra helping of the oppression compared to a lot of other people, so it just seems... realistic that they'd have more to be pissed about?

The angry black man/woman trope is really about framing black people as inherently irrational and bullying, and even less than human as a result of that. It doesn't matter if their anger at the government is righteous (let's face it, it's because their anger is righteous and society needs to take that power away) because it's coming from a black man it's going to be paranoid, misdirected, and end in some overkill reaction way out of proportion for the actual offense.

A very clickbait title, but the article is pretty on point. There is a movement to create a false equivalency between male and female victims of domestic violence in an effort to muddle the waters about systemic male violence as a threat to women as a class. Those numbers aren't remotely close, and the underlying issue of patriarchy encouraging violence as a solution to all problems impacts men as well as women. These anti-feminist efforts to talk-up domestic violence by women have no interest in dealing with that at all.

It's literally a bad faith effort to undermine feminist action against systemic violence against women by creating a false equivalence of violence against men that you never hear about because it's hushed up by the largely male-dominated legal system who are nevertheless in thrall to women.

That's not every person who feels like the existing laws and advocacy around domestic and sexual violence are underserving male victims. It's just a particular campaign that pops up every time the subject hits the news, which usually can be readily identified by their complete lack of solidarity or connection to other relevant social justice efforts.

Also expecting a kid that age to wake up at 7am is pretty lovely. You need more sleep when you're growing, and it's an early sign of puberty starting. 'But school' is bullshit because school times are for parent's convenience, not kids; elementary schools especially start so early with the expectation that many parents need to have their kids squared away at school before they get to their own jobs at 9am.
