I recently read The Long Earth series and I enjoyed it. They weren't the best books I've read in the last year, and I guess the earlier books in the series were better than the latter ones, but I thought it was pretty good. I looked up other books by Pratchett and they seemed like Young Adult titles so I didn't read anything else by him. What would you recommend?

Good Omens (him and Gaiman) is quite good and there was a recent Amazon Prime series based off it that is also worth watching. Like always read the book first.

Discworld is not really truly YA, though it's not not YA either. It definitely varies in quality but Guards Guards, Mort and Small Gods are pretty good and don't need any background. It's super light fantasy though so if its not your thing don't be afraid to bail.

Really tall guys can also lose height as they get older, especially if they've had back/hip surgeries that change their posture. Yao being like 2 feet taller than Dirk is what I find most interesting. Was Dirk secretly 5-10?

It's also not Fertitta, but his company "Landry, Inc" which notably DOES NOT include the Rockets. Even if Landry goes under that doesn't mean anything will necessarily happen to the Rockets, though obviously his net worth would drop quick. This Loan is him basically saying "I think there's a really, really good chance my company goes under but if it doesn't here's a really good ROI."

Landry, Inc is both a hilarious connection of businesses that I have no idea why people still go there AND a "How to lose money in a pandemic" guidebook.

Seriously:
Restaurants, Cruises, Aquariums, Hotels, (lovely)Casinos, Theme Parks. Yeah, his company must be absolutely hemorrhaging money right now.

The Rockets alone pretty much guarantee that even if everything goes belly up he still has an asset worth around 2 billion as an escape hatch.

I dunno where anyone would have the liquid capital to buy right now at that amount. The last thing the league wants to see is a sale right now because it would be 1000x harder to leverage that now than it would have been 6 months ago.

That appears to be a diversified portfolio for the service industry which is what most of America is. I can't really fault anyone who heavily invested in it foreseeing a massive pandemic shutting down cash flow for six months or more.

The service industry/pandemic exposure certainly isn't his fault, that was hardly a foreseeable event, but Landry, Inc specifically has, like, the crappiest examples. His restaurants are all specifically the kind you find in Malls, which are dying, his casinos are some of the most tired, Theme Parks always lose money.

Being in the service Industry isn't the problem, but his specific portfolio is like an all-NBA team of companies I bet are going to fail.

The Nugget's clientele is almost entirely aging and with less and less disposable income. I actually like gambling in old vegas because you can find more open tables and you can get meals for cheaper but if you look around you are not seeing groups of people who are able to drop a lot of cash.

Its fits in the sense of its "Such a good value for a Vegas Casino/Hotel!" while completely missing why people in 2020 are staying at places like the Golden Nugget less and less.

Edit: Well, I mean people in 2020 aren't staying ANYWHERE, but you get what I'm saying.

That's what I said! Though if you want to play blackjack and poker and grab something super cheap to eat and that's it, its fine. Otherwise there is really no reason to go over there and buying up those casinos are it terrifically dumb idea.

But don't tell me not to defend bad places right after calling rainforest cafe ok.

This is true of basically every restaurant. That fancy steakhouse makes it so good by drenching your streak in butter while its cooking.

There are definitely good restaurants that can manage without doing that (or at least being reasonable) but I had a roomate years ago that loved pasta Alfredo from places like TGIF or w/e but could never make it at home the right way. The answer was literally "Add an extra stick of butter". There are definitely good Italian places that can be great without adding an extra stick, but they are probably not chain/airport restaurants.

That's why we need calorie numbers on all menu items at any restaurant.

Putting Gar Forman back to scouting only is probably a good idea, he's been overseeing that side and the Bulls have been anywhere from middle-of-the-pack to really good at scouting. The problem has been more around what they do with talent they find.

If Gar can truly just focus on that I don't have a major problem with him sticking around. I have no idea what John Paxson brings to the table other than reminding the Bulls that the 90s existed.

ok, we're all quarantined and slowly going insane, it's time to see 'em, folks, let's post your Jim Boylen Firing Scenarios

1.
Jim Boylen demands to know the loving meaning of this and invites all of the bulls players to join him on a conference call so they will threaten to mutiny against the new front office if he's fired but then accidentally pulls the plug on his own computer and is never heard from again.

2.
An anonymous Bull breaks into the practice facility, steals the clock. Every day, he mails another piece to Boylen.

3.
Jim Boylen hops on a conference call with karnisovas and accidentally shares his screen, showing that he is already submitting headshots to Oaf Modeling Agency.

Boylen gets told he's going to be fired, sends out a Zoom invite to all the players to join in solidarity. Karnisovas and Boylen sit in awkward silence for 40 minutes. Only Arcidiacono briefly joins, never turns on his camera, and quickly leaves.

gently caress Gar Foreman that loving snake rear end bitch tho

I still have a level of respect for Paxson(he seemingly fired(demoted?) himself which kudos), that I never had for Gar. It was long past due for him to go as Executive, but man, I loved those Baby Bulls Teams that he built in the mid 00s, he was never able to take them past the grindy fun team until lucking into Rose, who got hurt. And should have never been allowed to trade Jimmy Butler, but yeah.

John Paxson choked and punched Vinny Del Negro, and he was the main guy who brought in Boylen. Paxson has been really bad for the team, and I don't trust one bit his "Shucks guys, I guess you can run this basketball team now" shtick. Forman was horrid in his GM-duties but at least he was responsible for a really good run of drafting and scouting, which has been just about the only good thing they've had going.

Not defending Forman at all, but guys like Paxson are a lot worse. I hope I'm wrong but I think they'll still have trouble until they get rid of Paxson entirely.

I'd imagine G-league would be "safer" to the extent that the NBA won't hold you to a contract in the G-League if you were NBA eligible. I'd assume NCAA and G-League would either both go next season or neither would, but I dunno. I could see NCAA being careless with their players before the NBA would.

Your point that NBL has a built in excuse is a good one and really should apply to the G-League too, but they need some good success stories first so I'd be happy if Green was a great success story.
