I've been thinking to make a synthwave album and I don't know much about music. Sure it seems far fetched but learning music production from some of the greats doesn't sound like such a bad idea now does it? And now with the world under quarantine maybe I could finally "kick out the jams" so to speak.

Get piano lessons and learn about melody, harmony etc and then learn how to use a synth, otherwise you won't make anything interesting.

There's no way its going to be worth $90 for knowledge that is undoubtedly going to be available from a public library or on youtube. There are 1000s of hours on music theory and music production on youtube. Deadmau5 might be able to show you some technical tricks and pointers that he uses himself, but that's really only going to help you produce music like deadmau5 does. When I was at Uni, I had access to a professional writing coach. I used the service quite a bit, and it helped me be come a more technically proficient writer. However, it didn't help me write anything compelling. It will be the same with music. You can understand how cutoff and resonance affect a sine wave but that won't help you make a compelling tune. ' Masterclass seems like a glossy refined educational product, but it probably won't make you noticeably better at anything. The only answer is to spend more time in the shed.

You only need to learn music theory which is free then you try out different software which is also free until you find something that works for you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smt3_KOv4E8 A Grand Egg fucked around with this message at 05:12 on Apr 5, 2020 |

Not only made a synthwave album with no real music experience but I performed it live at the local barcade. So I’d say it works, regardless of any opinion on the man and his music it’s a pretty good crash course in Ableton. And he speaks pretty plainly about not being a master of music theory who has still succeeded anyway so that was a nice confidence booster.

It turns out there’s a lot of different chord progressions called “gently caress I dunno” and I’m not sure how you tell the difference so it seems the whole music theory thing is way beyond me either way

Most musicians are intensely nerdy. You have to be at least a little nerdy about music to be any good i think.

There's this necessary step called "practicing and sucking for years" that most people want to skip and Masterclass markets itself as a way to skip that step. You can't skip that step.

Gonna disclaim with, all I know about Masterclass is the ads I've seen on YouTube and briefly perusing their website a few months ago to see if there was anything worth buying. Also my background is music education and composition. You're going to need some knowledge of the topic. That's why it's called a masterclass. If you don't know basic theory, or know what a DAW is and have a basic idea of how to use one, or how to sample, then the masterclass will be useless. When I was in university for music, they would have several 'masterclasses' on different topics during a semester. The ones that pertained to me (jazz) were useful and made sense. The ones that were outside of my discipline maybe had some benefits, but were ultimately pretty forgettable. But this is anecdotal so YMMV.

IDK about music but every time I see a famous author’s advice on writing it’s just “write the thing, and then redraft it somehow to make it good”. They give some tips but ultimately it’s “just be good at the thing and do it a lot”. P much all advice from people good at something is useless for a beginner

you need to learn the basics of a music program, make some basic lovely stuff, and do that over and over. quarantine is a great time to do that. if you want to pay or not pay is fine. if its worth the money to you go for it. you probably could find the same info for free, but thats true of a lot of things we pay for.

Prism Mirror Lens posted:P much all advice from people good at something is useless for a beginner I don't think this is true necessarily. You can be good at something and also be good at teaching it, but it requires you to be good at teaching, which is a skill distinct from whatever it is you're trying to teach. You can also be mediocre at things and yet be good at teaching them up to a certain level, again only if you're a good teacher.

Well that’s the thing. To my understanding for the money you get access to every class. Walked into quarantine a hapless schlub, walked out a published author, film director, and synth wave guitar virtuoso. You love to see it!

You can't just look at youtube because you don't know anything about music so you don't know what is totally bullshit and what is useful. Depending on the genre there is a good chance 90 percent of people know literally zero music theory. Masterclasses are very good and cool, but not for people just starting. They are more for people already in the flow who are looking for new angles to approach the work from. (At least all of the ones on writing are. I have no idea outside of that.) 1. Google some combination of "easy songs" "your instrument" and "your genre" If it is electronic music you HAVE to know how to use a keyboard. 2.Make a short list of ten artists you REALLY REALLY like, and just start learning their music piece by piece. Clearly some artists are going to be outside of your comfort zone at first. 3. Make a list of mid level and lower upper level artists in your genre and literally just dm them and email them and ask what musicians you should be paying attention too and maybe things to learn. Especially on tour musicians have downtime and like to feel important. These talks CAN develop into long term relationships if you don't be weird about it. People love to feel like they had a hand in helping something. I played music for a living for about three years, and then quit and now make a living drawing and taught myself to do both things in a very similar way. The arts are completely built around personal relationships and there is no science to any of it. You HAVE to just be bad until you are good and keep going. You won't know what people are talking about until you are deep in it enough to understand, so things are going to just sound like gibberish until you basically already know them intuitively. The big thing you have to do is FINISH things. You cant abandon every song halfway through because it is bad. A bad finished thing will always be worth more than a great unfinished thing. Unfinished things are nothing.

There is a science to pop art. You can even go to universities to learn the science, they teach it to everybody. It doesn't do you a lot of good if you don't already know someone in the business though because they teach it to everybody.

^^^ You just need to learn the four chords. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nuGt-ZG39cU For actual content, I've seen the Werner Herzog filmmaking course. Obviously it's worth it just to see him talk about how he motivates himself by reading ancient Icelandic poetry and what not. But as for making you a filmmaker... eh. Can you really learn how to write a script in 10 minutes? Shoot the footage in 15? It's not rocket science of course but there's nothing anyone could say in this time to make you even decent at anything, although there absolutely are valuable tips and suggestions. There are a bunch of free (and paid) courses on Coursera , or youtube if you want to learn something. Not saying the masterclass is useless but you're mostly going to be paying for the production values and recognizable names.

zedprime posted:There is a science to pop art. You can even go to universities to learn the science, they teach it to everybody. Sure. Kind of. But knowing the science doesn't seem to be as helpful as having good taste and knowing what to pursue. And learning it could make you much worse. (See Weezer.). If they really had it down to a science the hit makers wouldn't be random kids on soundcloud just following their ears. edit- And those four chords are definitely a thing. And you will learn it from learning stuff you like since the things you like will likely gravitate towards the things other people also like. pop punk fucked around with this message at 01:31 on Apr 6, 2020 |
