Its pretty hosed up that all wizards are apparently okay with just erasing muggle memories because they don't feel like sharing magic with the rest of the world.

So does every single wizard in the UK go to Hogwarts? Because it definitely doesn't seem like a big enough school for an entire country.

New Harry Potter game got officially announced at the Sony PS5 event going on right now. https://twitter.com/HogwartsLegacy/status/1306326061131522048 Since it is set in the 1800s sounds like they're trying to sidestep any direct HP connection.

Can't find a bigger version but this is all I think of when people talk about wizards not understanding bathrooms.

Harry, the two places you are safe from Voldemort are Hogwarts and your abusive Aunt and Uncle's house. So I guess you're heading back to the abusive family members instead of just staying at Hogwarts year round even though other people live there year round too.

Don't forget he lets Harry's godfather go to wizard prison where your soul is slowly murdered by evil ghosts. Because the good guys are definitely the side with evil ghosts that are so evil there's a special spell just to keep them away.

Speaking of Quirrell, I really love the part of Wizard People, Dear Reader where the narrator gets to the face reveal and just freaks out.

You know, Snape is a pretty bad potions teacher if he has all this tips and tricks to make better potions and then just straight up doesn't share them with his students.

Definitely more Time Traveler's Wife. Arrival's thing was that you could experience time non-linearly but you weren't physically time travelling.

Sydin posted:A story about a squib character who actually manages to function in the magical world by obtaining mastery of potions, magical plants and creatures, and other stuff that on paper does not seem to require personal magic like floo powder, invisibility cloaks, and what not would could actually be really interesting. There's a character like that in the manga/anime Jujutsu Kaisen which is a world where people use "curse magic" to fight monsters. One of the side characters comes from a prestigious sorcerer family but can't use magic at all so instead they train themselves to be a strong fighter and use special magic weapons instead.

In the second book what's his name screws up a spell and removes some of Harry's bones, leaving a flesh sack. So imagine doing that on purpose.

While the movie is still probably going to be terrible one bright spot could be that they're thinking of replacing Depp with Mads Mikkelsen. Now there's a Grizzlebazzle that Dumbledore could be gay for.

My favorite parts are when Brad Neeley gets bored of what's happening in the movie so he has the characters go on bizarre flights of fancy, like Dumbledore as a rotten cake or Harry flying across America.

There used to be on Youtube a thing where someone dubbed over the first movie with Wizard People but most of it got pulled.

To be honest I never heard it as "Queerman" but more "Quirmin" just turning it into a nonsense word. Also watching that linked one I completely forgot that he rewrote the story so that Voldemort was Harry's dad.

Also my understanding of the situation is that she used it because it is the name of a breed of horse (which people are trying to get changed.)

Did Rowling ever explain what was going on with ghosts? Because that whole situation sure seemed hosed up.

Like maybe Hogwarts should have done something about the Nazi house in the first place. Like maybe disband it after Voldemort's defeat instead of just leaving it around for more kids to become radicalized.

Really all the House stuff was pretty bad. The series would have been much stronger if Hermione was Ravenclaw and Ron was Hufflepuff but Harry was friends with them anyway because he realizes that grouping people by broad personality types is dumb. Then you could do a thing where Harry thinks all Slytherin are bad because of Snape and Draco but then some random side Slytherin shows up and saves the day in like year 3 or something and joins the main crew.

She has a fat character in a scene where ever time it mentions the character it specifies that said character is grabbing another cookie from a tray.

At the end of the game you blow up the universe and it turns out that people just go to heaven regardless of how they acted in life. If you chose to kill anyone earlier in the game they're fine with it because they got to go to heaven where everything's great.

Edgar Allen Ho posted:It's still standing, all exploded up (which raises even more questions about what the gently caress the killing curse actually does because fake Moody definitely didn't explode that spider). They visit it in Deathly Hallows. There's also a big "Here lie Lily and James Potter, parents to our beloved wizard messiah Harry" memorial that only wizards can see. Muggles see it as a World War 2 memorial to, presumably, people from their village that either died in battle or got killed in the Blitz. Pretty hosed up of the wizards. Wizards basically don't see muggles as human. What with the special name for them and all the racist stuff about not being a "pureblood." Also how wizards are just allowed to erase muggle memories whenever they feel like it.

It sounds kind of similar to the Russian novel The Last Ringbearer which gets talked up as "Lord of the Rings but from Mordor's perspective" but its really just a rewrite of the story with Elves and Wizards as explicitly evil. So it actually doesn't bring any kind of actual commentary to the premise.

amigolupus posted:The biggest unanswered mystery in HP is why the gently caress did Lily choose to end up with James Potter anyway? She's spent six years at Hogwarts watching James and his little cronies strut around terrorizing people, including her best friend for the high crime of "existing". I know Sirius mentioned that James eased up on pranking people in their seventh year and only cursed Snape while Lily wasn't around to witness it, but that's still six years of Lily knowing James as a bullying rear end in a top hat and creeps who keeps asking her out. He was handsome and rich and it turns out Lily was super shallow.

I am kind of surprised that Rowling hasn't just gone all prequel series with James and his crew during his time at Hogwarts. That seems like a really easy moneymaking move. Like she could even do the standard prequel thing where all those instances you saw of James being a shithead to Snape turned out to have a different context where he had his reason for doing it.

Regalingualius posted:This post got me to thinking: its kind of amazing that J.K. never explored the obvious idea of a magic university at all, as far as I remember. Just spitballing here, but I could see it as something like this: That's kind of just The Magicians which is about a college where people go to learn real magic. Unlike the Wizarding World magic is extremely difficult to do because you need to know and involves a lot of math and knowledge of the position of heavenly bodies at all times.
