The trouble with being a translator is that you have to make sure that things are accurate, which doesn't always leave room to make them interesting. The fan translations lean toward making things sound cool and the official ones lean toward making them accurate. A good translation needs to be interesting AND accurate. Edit: I looked up the raws and it looks like Dogstorm expresses the idea in that exact way "We are both at a disadvantage." Which is why it was translated that way. That's why ideally you have a translator-editor-proofreader cycle. The translator puts the concepts into the target language, the editor makes it sound good in that language, and the proofreader makes sure the editor didn't gently caress up the translation. At the very least we can thankfully count on the dude translating official One Piece to not gently caress up on the details, which is good. Disclaimer: I don't speak Japanese but I can get by in Chinese and I have some experience working with translators putting academic papers into English. It occurs to me that Big Mom has been pretty nice to people who are nice to her, that's just a limited amount of people because most people don't get the option to be nice to her because she's currently a despotic overlord of a horrifying candyland.
