Dice notation gives you the freedom to specify that without ambiguity. Simply quoting ranges either a) introduces ambiguity or b) forces you to say something like "all rolls are done with X number of the same dice, where X is the lowest end of the range". The former is confusing. The latter takes tools out of the game designer's hand.
