the books written after the authors split are terrible. backwards is slightly less bad, but last human is just horrid. what's interesting about it is that you can plainly see what each person brought to the partnership, and how both of them were worse without the other.

The reason the new seasons have been better is simply because they shoot it like they used to back in the 80s and early 90s. I can totally understand people not liking it, and feeling it’s too dated. I know when I’m watching these episodes I’m laughing at jokes I simply wouldn’t if it was outside of RD. Bit of comforting nostalgia has its place, and I hope they keep churning them out at the traditional pace of 6 episodes every half decade.

I did skip over some of the slow parts but overall: watchable. It's also fun to see something like this because it's so unique

It was good. Probably the closest to the original magic since the huge break. It actually ties in quite tightly with the established lore, especially when compared with some of the other reboot seasons. The post-reboot seasons were full of scenes that just made no sense, like Lister betting on a race (Against who? With what currency?) or the episode just completely forgetting that Rimmer is a hologram (Stuck in the past for years with no contact with the ship etc).
