Extremely Civ5 vibe, with all the same problems with unit mechanics. However the smaller scale may help offset some of those late game mechanical problems. The orders system will almost certainly be changed until it's ignorable, which is fine, but it would have been better if they never went down that path.

I saw it mentioned by Soren Johnson, the developer, that the game should be in Early Access phase for about a year, so if you want the finished product you'll just have to wait. I will get to play three days from now, yay!

The version launching May 5th appears to be quite playable already, but has only a fraction (maybe 1/3?) of the planned events and needs a bunch of bug fixing, as you'd expect from Early Access. There are some unanimated placeholder graphics for a few units and buildings etc.

Game has 200 years (turns) of playtime, win conditions include reaching a set number of cities + legendary cities + wonders through construction or conquest, or completing 10 Ambitions. I've watched one Twitch streamer play about 16 hours and reach year 126 in that time, without getting close to the win conditions yet.

The game includes music by Philip Glass (I doubt that the song Koyaanisqatsi is in there though, would amuse me if it was), I don't know what other music there might be, or if the final version has something else entirely.

Edit:
Oh btw, there will be an opt-in multiplayer development branch too.

Question in Discord:
Will be there a Map of Mediterranean Sea on 05.05.2020? I mean a full map from Spain to Persia not only the Part of Italy or North Africa.

Answer from devs:
No. The screenshots showing images of Italy and Spain are from the campaign maps for the Carthage campaign, which is still in development and has no ETA announced. We won't actually have any drawn maps available on the first day of Early Access. There are eight map scripts, though.
Our maps covering the Mediterranean and the Middle East are split into two sections. At the scale of our campaign content, the maximum dimensions of the game aren't sufficient to reach all the way from Gibraltar to the Great Salt Desert.
We would have to do a map that is out of scale with everything else, in order to fit that range into one game. That may happen. We've realized there would be requests for it. But if we do that, Italy won't look like it did in the released screenshot. It would have to be smaller, with fewer cities.

Elsewhere the devs mentioned that a map editor will be included in the early access game, but it is incomplete.

"real world" maps are boring anyway and I really don't understand why people clamor for them, especially in a game like civ where the mechanics make the "real world" nothing but a vague shape.

The first thing I wondered was what order in line was the child being bullied? If he's second in line, but has better stats, I want to side with him. If he's fourth in line then he will never be king, so I have to side with my bully child. I was about to open the succession screen, but before I did, I hovered over his name, and there it was: "Second in Line".

It tells me their traits, ages, opinion of me; everything I need to know right on that screen.

And look at the choices. I can hover over them and it tells me exactly what the result will be. No Civilization 6 mystery responses.

OK so the game is nothing at all like CK2 :v:

Looks real nice, and I'm honestly tempted to go for it ... though I'm afraid early access is too early right now and I'd just burn out on it before it's actually finished. Do we know if the price will be higher upon final release?

Edit: let me answer myself, it's 25% off right now on the Epic Store, so about 25€, and until the 14th. Well for that price I might just jump in...

Civilization IV may look ugly now, but its user interface was generally leagues ahead of V or VI. Kind of unsurprising that Soren Johnson's next game would have an A+ interface.

Game is good even as an early access version, once it is finished it should be awesome. The price will go up once the game is finished, this is a good time to buy.

If you bought the pre-order before the discount showed up, Epic will return the difference, which is nice. I was already happy with the purchase, now I am getting money too.

no dates about how long the exclusivity deal will last, but they've said they expect to be in early access for a year+ and I think it's safe to assume it will remain an epic exclusive at least until it leaves early access

I think I just about get how to play, but I absolutely don't know if I'm playing well. My capital seems to have started off building a settler on its own, but I don't think that was the best choice, it might've been better to build a farmer off the bat to get some growth going first.

Anyone aware of a good new player guide out there?

Been playing the game for few hours now, here's some first impressions.

It looks a lot like Civ 5, but the graphics and effects feel less detailed than it (could be because it's still early release.)
Especially after the lush and detailed Civ 6, Old World looks a bit dated, but for me the graphics arent a big deal.

Unit movement is one-unit-per-tile, which I like as long as the AI can handle it, cant report on that yet.

You use workers to build stuff on each invidual hex like in Civ 6.

The choices and mini-quests actually remind me of Beyond Earth (!) more than Crusader Kings II, I really like the flavor the small choices bring to the game.
Especially the rival families inside the empire are cool for roleplaying.

By the way, you can choose a Roleplaying mode from Options so the effect of your choices doesnt show when you hover mouse over them.

I was hoping a bit more asymmetrical bonuses generally for the nations, families, techs etc. like some older Civilization games used to have
(like how Democracy gave you extra science but people got war weariness). Old World seems to follow the style of Civs 5 and 6 where there's just bonuses top of bonuses.

Besides the big factions, there's Tribes (think city-states or Endless Legend's minor factions) and barbarians.
The Tribes are one of my favorite part of the game so far, the way the big empires try to control the Tribes is more
fun than in civilization.

All the scripted events are another great feature, some of them have unique art screens that are beautiful, and they bring atmoshpere to the game.

From my small sample time I have got enjoyment of the game, don't know yet is Old World going to be a classic but I cant wait to play some more.

P.S. An expansion located in Far East with it's empires would be very cool!

I disagree. EGS timed exclusivity is usually 1 year. That game Hades went to Steam after a year, and that thing's still in EA.

Anyway, the EGS is a bit clunky, and missing a lot of features, but it mostly stays out of the way.

Played until the vandals in return for a generous bribe, reached into my computer and pulled an object out of memory causing the game to freeze on an ai turn. the bug logger then crashed :thunk:

The must have really wanted that war.

Im enjoying it so far, though getting some more events in will be nice. A lot of noticeable early development things like unparsed variables, units in different state of development (though i kinda like the ones that are just icons like the elephants the art is nice and brings me back civ 2 days).

Overall the able difficulty is way too easy, and i’m normally bad at really getting the hang of 4x meta. Im just swimming in resources. Though I think the lack of stress from trying to find settlement sites and the undo button help that feeling too. Probably will really crank up the difficulty on my next game, though will set development low.

Awesome!
Briefly gave it a try this morning. I can definitely feel that this can be an addictive "One More Turn" game, although I'm still struggling with the basics. Most noteworthy, it generally seems to take a really long time for me to build units. Like 8+ turns. Is that normal?

I am really digging the dynasty system. For the past few years, I had been grooming my heir to be a bit more war-minded, so that I could look into attacking some nearby barbarians. Gave him the right education for it, had him stuck on General duty for a long time, that sort of stuff.

...

And then he died while swimming in the river. So now his son was next in line, and he was actually more diplomatic minded. To my surprise, when my king died, most of the enemies that I made came to him during the funeral and offered peace, because their beef had been with the previous ruler. I really liked this sequence, and how it changing my initial plans. I'm really hoping to see more of that happening in the future.

Depends on the city/family. If you're playing a faction that has a champion type family then you'll get some extra training and build them pretty quickly if you build them in a champion city. If I build in a champion city, I get a warrior in about 5 years.

"This may have been a mistake."
I'm really enjoying the feel of this game. I feel like I'm playing a board game, with a relatively limited and focused scope, and objectives that are relatively clearcut, with choices that are well spelled out. It has been very enjoyable to play so far, with each turn feeling impactful (the order system really helps with this - especially once you're later in the game and have several scouts, military units, workers, etc.).

I think the 1UPT works really well here, and far better than it did in Civ V/VI. It feels like there's more room to maneuver, and the limit on orders necessarily makes armies smaller. You have an interesting tradeoff where only so many units can move and attack, and you can choose to not have your workers working or scouts scouting to focus on the military, or vice versa. That being said, I haven't had any large scale wars yet, so I don't know how much that holds true later in the game.

I suspect that large empires start drowning in bureaucracy later on when you have 2 dozen workers and lots of them need orders each turn, and your military starts to become bloated and unwieldy, with only some of your forces being able to respond in certain areas based on how much attention you focus on them. You do get more orders over time though; there are tile improvements (mostly horses, camels, etc.) that generate orders each turn, and you can definitely focus on getting more orders built more quickly if that's something you find that you need.
