It's pretty weird. I think Cuba is the only country that has both free healthcare and no freedom of speech? Only one coming to mind. China's the biggest country without freedom of speech but it does not have universal coverage. Even at the public hospitals you have to pay + bribe the doctor to get seen and plenty of people go bankrupt from medical bills.

I paid like $700/year for my health insurance in China. Was not a huge deal for me since I was getting paid well above the average local salary, but for normal Chinese people it's a burden.

Also that insurance didn't cover much of anything, fortunately I didn't have to use it.

The fun part of doctor bribing in China is partly because salaries for doctors are set by the state (at least in public hospitals) and haven't been adjusted since I dunno, the 70s? So they literally make like $200 a month and if they didn't get bribes they can't afford food.

Also there aren't any nurses. Stuck in the hospital? You have to pay for a caretaker or have family come in every day and do everything for you. The level of care is abysmal as well, and the public hospitals are mosh pits. If you have money, there are good hospitals to use. Basically the Chinese healthcare system is as hosed as the US one and in many of the same ways.

South Korea has a quite functional healthcare system though, I miss it.

I really don't understand where people get the notion that China has a good healthcare system. Is it like they see that China describes itself as communist with Chinese characteristics and they think:
"Oh communism, you know ideologically speaking, that's pretty harmonious with universal healthcare like Canada has. And Canada has great healthcare, so China's must be great too!!"

That's the only way I can imagine people come to that conclusion. The moment you do any amount of research, you find that the system is reviled and isn't defended even by wumaos. Like, it has to be some kind of cognitive critical failure, where the heuristic mental construct of categorical extrapolation misleads people. Nobody who actually has done their homework or lived in China actually thinks the Chinese system is good in any way.

All you keyboard revolutionaries hankering for living in North Korea, here's a pro tip, you have a recent example you can use to get premium accommodation in one of their progressive labor camps, just book a trip to Pyongyang and write "Kim smells" on a propaganda poster to get all your immigration procedures sorted out on an express schedule. The healthcare is supposedly stunning.

Yeah it's a shame there's no way a country on the Korean peninsula could become developed and free without an overseas empire to plunder.

It's similar to how Internet Atheists tend to start by dunking on hardcore fundies, take that experience of tearing apart paper-thin arguments to mean that they are obviously hyper-logical geniuses battling all forms of superstition and foolishness, then start going crazy attacking feminism and minorities with their "logic". (Which is really just their own unexamined prejudices.)

A lot of Internet Leftists will start by tearing holes in the arguments of idiotic hyper-patriot Freeper-types. Then they decide that anyone supporting (or not constantly criticizing) the USA is just like that and that anyone critical of the US must be a secret hero being oppressed by capitalism/the CIA/etc. Hence the huge tankie support for Venezuela and North Korea.

It's also funny when it's leftists since NK is explicitly not leftist and excised all mentions of socialism/communism from their government years ago. They've always been a reactionary military dictatorship, nothing's actually changed, but they stopped pretending they're anything else.

In a similar vein for amazing sentences by a former admin:

R. Guyovich posted:

Democratic People's Republic of Korea

Now we're delving into more aggressive opponents of American imperialism, and consequently getting into countries more heavily propagandized against. As I said, there are other places to talk about the DPRK government and how unreliable our reporting is about this country. It throws suspicion on everything we hear. No matter your opinion, the DPRK suffered unimaginable loss during the Korean War, with a full third of the population killed and the city of Pyongyang leveled by the fighting. With that bloody history fresh on the mind, and with the United States military playing war games and undergoing nuclear tests on its border, does it come as a surprise the DPRK would emphasize its military as a means of self-defense? The people of Korea know very well what American invasion and occupation is like. And, to most Westerners' surprise, it's not just the north that wants the US out. The "Sunshine Policy" of the late '90s and early '00s was making great strides toward a friendlier relationship between the DPRK and the Republic of Korea. But the Bush administration's "Axis of Evil" saber rattling put a stop to that. With American troop movement interfering with peace and reunification, the ROK has its own share of anti-imperialists, despite the prevailing opinion of Americans who've never visited. Therefore the ROK could be included as an "honorary member" of the anti-imperialist bloc, if a government similar to Kim Dae-Sung's ever made its way back into power.
