I saw the Mighty Mighty Bosstones play two sets at the Buzz bakesale in 2000 in West Palm Beach Florida. They played a second set on the side stage because another band didnt show up. It was a huge crowd for the side stage and I remember I had to keep picking up my uncle because he kept getting knocked over while people skanked violently.

I saw No Doubt back in 08(?), and by that time I was pretty convinced that they were no longer a 'ska band' and that they had 'sold out'. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were still a ska band at heart. Checkboard things, skanking, horns, the works; it was all there. It wasn't a 'pure-ska' show like RBF or Streetlight but it was still great.

Anyways here's different people, tragic kingdom still slaps.

Streetlight Manifesto is legit good. I prefer Catch 22's version of Keasbey Nights though. It and Turn The Radio Off by RBF got played billions of times in my old mp3 cd player. Anyway, here's a few of my favorites:

Remember those trash ska collaboration cds that had twenty five songs on them? It was one song from the Dance Hall Crashers you already knew, BumbleBee Tuna by Mephiskapheles, and then twenty three unlistenable tracks in a row. I bought every single one I could find at Tunes.

He made Bruce Lee Band by collaborating with different, better bands. Nothing too sexy, but it injected a lot of energy into some of his later stuff. This is him and the Rx Bandits on 'Beautiful World' in 2005:

He will always be a mensch because I wrote a rambling letter to AsianManRecords as a child that could have been summed up as "I would like you to send me a random selection of stuff." post-it. And they gave me way more than the money I sent them called for, plus stickers and a kind note.

hey, me too! I ordered a sweatshirt from them in like, 1997 or something (I guess it was Dill Records then) and it took forever to show up, but because it was delayed they sent me a bunch of free poo poo (vinyl and stickers, I think. also a nice note.) I saw him with Skankin' Pickle at least a couple times when I was super into all of that. maybe a little silly in retrospect but it was a good time.

Ska was my IDENTITY and I was totally insufferable and annoying about it. But not your pedestrian, derivative, new-wave trash you THIRD WAVERS. If you don't know all the words to The Harder They Come soundtrack then get out of my car. Ugh I wore a checkerboard hat. For like 3 years all I listened to was ska & reggae, and while I was also into ska-punk and 3rd wave, I could tell you EVERYTHING about ska from 1968-1973.

Turns out, ska music has been a much smaller part of my adult life than 17-year-old me expected.

The whole ska-core revival thing of the mid 90's was pretty weird when I think about it. It came out of nowhere. Not as weird as that "neo-swing revival" poo poo that barfed itself out about the same time, but still weird. You couldn't turn on the radio without hearing Goldfinger or Reel Big FIsh.

Honestly even now as a godless heathan communist I don't have a problem with FiF. They always had a couple of "hey let's call out the shitbags in our ranks, in a polite way" songs on their albums and definitely aligned with the social justice side of christianity.

e: I mean, who would expect a christian band to release a song about the dangers of modern corporate culture?
