What's your favorite piece of software that probably most people aren't familiar with? Is it for a hobby? Your job? Why do you like it? Is it still supported? How long have you been using it? I'm very fond of old-and-not-that-powerful art program Opencanvas. I've been using it for over 10 years. Originally it was free but it's still cheap. You can play back the progress if your artwork as a video! Which is cool. But more importantly, you can return to any stage in the process. So if you overworked a picture or combined layers you did not mean to, you can always go back and work on something starting from any earlier point. The brushes are good, and the layer effects. I use it in conjunction with ClipStudio but a program that could genuinely do both would be heavenly. I also like UnFreez for easily making lovely little gifs. VirtualDub is handy for some dumb little stuff also!

I habitually download any image that catches my eye and kind of haphazardly throw them into a vaguely appropriate folder. I have tens of thousands of images of almost anything you can imagine. I use dupeGuru to scan my directories for duplicates every so often, since I download so many it's inevitable that I grab the same image twice once in awhile.

https://soundswitch.aaflalo.me/ Great little tool for swapping audio devices. I basically use it as a hot key to send audio to my headphones when an IP phone rings, then back to my external speakers. I hate wearing a headset the whole time.

If I had to get into IRC for some reason I have an old version of 6.something mIRC that is from before it introduced a hard crash on a specific string which was only fixed after it got turned into excessively nag ware. I'd probably get owned for a hundred different reasons by now but oh well and also can't imagine there's lots of people out there looking to exploit a 17 year old mIRC version.

Anyone who makes 3D models for video games is familiar with xNormal. It's free software that lets you apply details from high poly models to an optimized low poly model. Despite it's lovably dogshit windows media player skin UI it's really robust baking software. Again, it's free

Noteworthy 2. It's old but I have yet to meet a piece of software that makes it any easier to write out music. Pretty sure by this point it's probably freeware.

My work still uses Lotus Notes for a bunch of database stuff and I actually really like the bit we use for project tracking. It’s just nicely organized and really easy to find what you’re looking for. I’m on the team that’s working on the browser based replacement strategy and I hate it already.

MDSolids for getting a starting point for mechanical engineering problems when I'm throwing poo poo at the drawing board. Used it a lot during my college time and I still find use in it. Looks like poo poo but it's essentially every mechanical engineering formula in one place with dialogue boxes, makes everything plug n play. Beats modelling poo poo up and then using ANSYS only to find my starting conditions were garbage

When I was in 6th or 7th grade, we got to use this program that let you create bridges and have a truck drive over them so you could see what parts of the bridge would bear most of the weight.
