I haven't watched the What We Left Behind but from what I've read of the pitch for season 8 of DS9, most people hated it. However I think it would be perfectly fine for a first episode, providing the second episode is Sisko, after catching up with the events of the past 20 years, goes :wtf: and uses his prophet powers to alter the timeline so that it's still 20 years later but he's been around for 19.5 of those 20 years.
Sisko is retired and chilling on Bajor where the most he has to deal with is the occasional fanatic and he has weekly chats with Kira who is either the Kai or a Starfleet Admiral based on DS9 depending on whether or not Bajor finally decided to join the Federation. DS9 is still considered really important for the exploration of the Gamma quadrant, which the Dominion allow since they've also chilled out a bit.
Sisko also warned the Romulans about their sun going supernova and they actually believed him enough to prevent it or greatly reduce the damage to their empire.

Also Sisko has a grandson named Nog.

A new series set in the late 25th Century featuring the crew of the brand new Enterprise H as they go on weekly adventures around the galaxy. Have some vague overarching plotline that ties the season together that isn't the end of the multiverse due to a naughty computer program. Featuring a cameo of Riker/Troi/LaForge/Worf in old person makeup for one episode. They can call it Star Trek: The Next Next Generation.
