A this point, going on an optional boss fight might be a bad investment since we have Players and NPC's to rescue, and maybe a beast plague to deal with. As cool as it might be to see how Tank synergizes with this wolf.

Day 29 Final Part

"We take the longer route." You say it with some finality, as you motion to the southern end of the Wolf Woods. You do not have any intention of risking the travel time you've already put into this, just to save a little time. The normal mobs are difficult enough despite your inflated powers.

There are various groans as you lead the group into the southern woods, from two separate parties - Tank, SKS, Charrin and Boarmaster all are sad about not fighting the big scary boss, and try their best to convince you that you guys could obviously take it and that it'd be worth it. As you walk, you eventually convince them that you can always come back to the boss after conquering another event and powering up, without risking having to walk all the way here again. Darra, Lavender, and Tyler feel like you're being too cautious and that delaying the journey isn't a good idea, and you're not able to convince them that it's completely worth it. Still, Lavender relents that she will follow you regardless, and the other two agree that breaking up from the group seems... stupid.

Lila, Suz, Dukke, and... well, Eagle never says anything. The other three don't seem to care either. Suz and Dukke are talking about combinations, and you can hear her discussing some details of her spells with him. Lila is keeping to herself right now, she isn't even talking to SKS, who is showing off some of his skills to Boarmaster and Tank's approval. He continually disappears into shadows and then reappears. It's like herding children getting them through the southern Wolf Woods - especially since it seems... remarkably barren of the aforementioned wolves. If the north woods were the habitat of the boss, and the central woods you had been taking a route through the home of the normal mobs, it seemed like nothing lived in the south woods.

Except for endless brambles, tree roots, shrubbery, and weeds that seemed to grasp at your ankle just to drag you down. It's not risky to travel through the path, the only injury anyone gets all day is when Suz's ankle is caught by one of the tangling weeds, and her face meets a swift 'friend' in a rock that helps stop her fall. Charrin has her bloody nose healed up quickly though. You mostly pass the time as you travel by talking in guild chat. It's mostly people bragging about how they're going to pass all of you up. Basically everyone who remained at home has gained a couple levels over the last few days, or are nearly there - the only exceptions being... Samedi, who just doesn't say anything. All day. All you hear from Zelia on her is that she took HeatofFire to be her help in finishing a quest, and refused to let any of the guild's actual members join in.

You literally pass the whole day like this, watching the gold count slowly tick up on the guild page. You are not terribly excited by the slow progress of it - a lot of the guild members are in your current group, so them not getting any loot is suffering from that point of view. Your lunch was uneventful, and dinner more so - besides that your stamina ticked up another two points when you ate dinner (but not lunch? you suppose you must have eaten lunch earlier in the day today.) It's the only really notable thing that happened for any of you.

The good news is, as you settle down after dinner to go over the map with Darra, she points a bit further along than you expected, "We're still a little behind going down the middle, but not having to deal with fights, exhaustion, and healing means we're.. not losing as much as we expected. Maybe a couple hours? If we stick to this route, we should arrive before dusk the day after tomorrow." She points to the route, which takes you through the central and northern forest for the shortest bit, "At least if it stays like this." But then she points to where she estimates you are - and moves it into the center before cutting through the North for the shortest amount of time again, "If we cut through the center, I bet we can shave a few hours off. Even with the wolves." The next finger goes straight from your path, through the northern woods, and is definitely the shortest, "My Pathfinding says that we should make it by tomorrow night if we walk from dawn to sundown, if we take the risky route."

Her personal recommendation is, surprisingly enough, the middle route. She wants to be there fast, not get everyone killed and have to redo the trip.

What route do you wanna take for the third day?
G. Stay on the safe southern route. It only loses a few hours and prevents any losses.
H. Move back to the central route - we can handle the mobs, the boss probably wont enter it, and it means getting to Ovinas with sunlight.
I. Cut through the northern woods. It's quickest, and means getting to town ahead of schedule, even with the delays.

Who do you want to hang out with before bed tonight?
A. The pups again - they need attention!
B. The sibling trio.
C. Your knights.
D. Charrin, your fellow Gamer
E. Spend the night sharpening your weapons for tomorrow.
F. Honestly, just write in who you wanna talk to.

Feel free to specify a topic you wanna explore too, if you like! I have a few ideas but I'm happy to explore others.

Also agree on H. Listening to our specialists' opinions is a mark of a good leader, and we really do need to work on that 'stop acting like a Main Character' thing. Plus, getting there with some sunlight left will be extremely helpful if we happen to get dropped into a big plot battle immediately upon arrival.

I don't think we've talked much with Charrin? So let's go D. Sharpening our weapons tomorrow night sounds extremely prudent, though.

Day 29 Social Part

"That seems like a good enough plan. Tank needs to show off and fight a little or he'll get bored." You give a bare laugh that Darra doesn't really return, as you agree to her plan. "I'm going to spend a couple hours seeing if I can't keep the pups out of trouble tomorrow." You want them to be gaining experience, even if it's incredibly small amounts - but you don't want them rushing into danger and distracting the others like last time.

"Charrin, Tyler, and I were gonna go over our nature skills and figure out if there's any synergies between the three Lorothal classes." Darra folds up her map very carefully before it vanishes into her inventory, which seems a little needless to you. You don't say that as you stand up, and move to gather up the pups from the campfire. Boarmaster is feeding Philips part of a wolf from yesterday - the pup doesn't care that it's uncooked. Lila is sitting with Remington cuddled up in her lap, petting him like a small dog instead of a wolf. Gillette is... playing fetch? with Eagle. Though you're not sure how intentional the fetch is, in this case - Eagle is shooting arrows at a small makeshift target, and Gil is chasing the arrows and pulling them out, before running them back to Eagle.

Despite their behavior as... 'puppies', when you call out, "Pups, come." They all turn their attentions from what they are doing and run as quickly as they can to you. You ignore the looks as you monopolize what are quickly becoming mascots for your guild, and choose to lead them slightly away from the camp. The overgrown southern forest is bare of predators, which make it feel safe enough - you even pass by Dukke and Tank sparring as you leave the camp. Guild chat, blink, and just your inflated stats make you feel even more comfortable with the idea.

The actual training is long and fairly tedious. You can usually get two of the three to listen to your commands, only to find the third wandering off. You end up resorting to treats, pieces of spiders from the dungeon acting as encouragement to listen. It's kind of disappointing to use them - you have a lot more razor wolf meat than spider hearts, but you're pretty sure that feeding them razor wolf meat would make you feel bad. They also seem to really... really enjoy the spider body parts. Supposed poisons do nothing to their stomachs.

With the encouragement of treats for acting good, the pups are quick to get in line. When you point at a tree and say attack, they charge it together as one. When you tell them not to fight, they are happy to dodge around... nothing. When you tell them to harry, two of them started to aim for your ankles, only to back off as soon as you looked to them. Hopefully it still works in a fight. You also manage to teach them the basic dog commands you remember from real life - they struggle more with those than the combat related commands, but they grasp it soon enough. You have them sitting, laying down, rolling over, and even giving you their paw.

Most of the camp is sleeping when you get back to your own tent, and drift off yourself.

-------------------

Day 30 Part 1

No one really complains about the swapping back and forth on routes - even those who wanted to fight the boss are at least 'happier' with getting some fights than having to deal with another boring day like yesterday. Breakfast is pretty cheerful due to that, even though you're forced to use Razor Wolf meat for the meal, instead of the tastier Red Wolves. It's also more time consuming to prepare, which makes you happier that today's journey would allow you to get some more ingredients. Feeding this many people isn't easy, but at least it tastes good at the end of the day.

The first leg of the journey is fairly quiet - Darra spots a single wolf in the distance within the first fifteen minutes, but it's too wary to approach - it doesn't even get within Eagle's sniping range. It's oddly quiet in the forest, actually - even the birds are not chirping. That always, always means something bad in your experience. When you realize that it's happening again, you pull your axes out of your inventory, and choose to have them at the ready. But nothing happens.

Nothing continues to happen for long enough that people start noisily complaining about it. At least two or three hours of nothing happening is driving people crazy. That's when Darra pipes up, "I smell something..." You take a big whiff of the air, and very faintly you smell something too. It smells like....

Boarmaster yells out, "Someone's having a barbeque!?" before you can complete your thought. He starts to rush ahead heedless of the marching order, Tank running after him - soon enough everyone is running forward to see what is happening. It's a weird event that hasn't happened before, and it breaks up the monotony of the travel. When you arrive at the scene of the smell a few minutes later, it's not a barbeque at all.

A red skinned, horned woman, at least eight feet tall, clad in heavy armor that hid every bit of her besides her head and horns, wielding what appears to be a stone sword wreathed in fire. A short man a foot smaller than even your tiny faerie body, but nearly four times as wide, wearing a red and yellow robe with a staff made of wrought iron inset with a red gem. And six dead, still flaming wolves. What's more surprising however, is their names, in the same golden color as your companions, Pyre Princess and Royal Beard.

"gently caress! More elves! I told you we should have killed that patrol!" Princess is not at all refined or dignified, as she raises her sword at you. "Now they're sending players at us!"

"Oi oi oi..." Beard's voice is a loud rumble, and the fire from Pyre's sword and the bodies floats to his staff, becoming a large fireball, "No need ta fuss. Look at 'em all. They're using numbers to make up for their weakness, to hunt us down. We just gotta take 'em out. It's not our fault these stupid tree huggers want to push us out, we're even taking care not to burn down their forest and they're still coming. An' you don't need to hold back, these ones'll come back just fine." His speech is loud enough to drown out every attempt you make to interrupt his rant.

"We're not here for yo-" You're finally able to get a word in edgewise, when the giant fireball he was holding over his head launches its way towards you. In the same moment, Pyre starts to charge in, heedless of the presumably aoe spell. You hear your allies putting up their various defensive buffs - those who have them at least - and others scattering.

What's your goal here?
A. Kill them for attacking us.
B. Capture(?) them, they seem to think they're wanted.
C. Talk them down, they might be useful.
D. Run away and leave them alone.

A PVP, PVP, PVP, PVP!!!!

Day 30 Part 2

You're no weakling who gets caught off guard by a bit of PVP. You've taken part in plenty of tournaments, won prizes in a variety of games, and always kept your cool throughout. If anything, it was more your style than raiding bosses and capturing dungeons. You could blink out of the way of the fireball, but instead you manifest Generosity on your arm, and dive into it before it gets close to the others. You're fast, fast enough that the explosion radius when it goes off in your face, you can see the two enemies getting caught up in it too. Unfortunately, so are Tank and Boarmaster, who also chose to rush in. Your shield, your inflated stats, and your equipment keeps you on your feet, but as you glance at your status, you see that a fifth of your health was shaved off in a single attack.

Unlike you, Boarmaster, Goremaster, and Tank are flung backwards by the powerful impact, unable to withstand the force of the blast. Their injuries look critical, and you call out, "The rest of you, focus on the tank. I'm going after the dwarf." You know a dwarf when you see one - and you also know he is either a pyromancer of some sort, or a priest, judging by his equipment and that powerful spell. An ancient wisdom you learned from one of your coaches, that he said he learned from a childhood game he'd play echoed in your mind - geek the mage.

Unfortunately, there's no such thing as a private chat in this game, not in the context of combat. Your guild chat access is cut off, and you're forced to yell your commands. Which brings Pyre Princess barreling at you, unscathed from the fireball - if anything, she seems to be wreathed in the fire of the explosion, and is laughing, "Don't you dare!" She is faster than even SKS, despite her heavy armor.

But you don't need things like speed, you turn your head towards the dwarf priest, gathering up another gout of flame, and blink your eyes, appearing behind him, with Pyre on the opposite side. Arrows rain down on Pyre, most of them burning up before they reach her, but your allies are charging in now - Dukke tackles her as she turns to you, but she doesn't go down. You swing your arm to throw your axe, only to hear, "Flamewarden's Mark!"

You cannot let go of your axe, a screen appears in front of your eyes as you try to throw your axe at the priest.

quote:

The taunt overwhelms you. You cannot attack that target.

You're about to curse, when you hear a more familiar voice, as Lavender calls out, "Bearing The Sins!" and a small window pops up to inform you that all your debuffs have been transferred to her. You swing your offhand this time, letting go of the axe before Pyre or Royal can figure out what just happened. The throwing axe flies cleanly at the dwarven man, who tries to dodge out of the way, but only succeeds in making the center-back shot lop off his left arm in a single blow.

"poo poo!" You hear him yell, "Pyre, it's time!" He calls out to her, where she is now being ganged up on by... well, everyone except your puppies. Tank and Boarmaster are back on their feet, alongside Dukke, Lavender, SKS, and even Lila, the latter two moving in and out of the melee to stab at openings. Eagle, Suz, and Darra take turns plinking arrows and spells into her fiery aura, which seems to just negate about half the attacks. Despite this, everyone around Pyre seems to be taking damage faster than she is, burns accumulating on their bodies even as Charrin heals them.

Your second axe flies into the dwarf while he is looking away - except it goes straight through him as he calls, "Avatar of the Fire Goddess.". His body melts away until he is replaced by a firey facsimile of him, still recognizable dwarven, but made out of solid fire. Even as far as you are from him, it's hot. The grass within a few feet around him instantly withers and catches aflame. That's far from the end of it, however - his arm restored, he turns to you and raises his now made of flame staff, launching a successive blast of fireballs the same size as the opening gambit.

You blink out of the way of the blasts, only to find the fireballs chasing you. It's almost oppressive how the ten massive, mini-suns speed after you with your successive blinks. After the forth blink, you begin to throw your axes, igniting the fireballs before they can reach you by sacrificing a bit of your durability. Until only one remains. Your axes disappear into your inventory as Generosity returns to your arm, and you charge into the blaze, activating Disappearing Act just before point of contact. You hear a laughter from the dwarf as you do it. The explosion is more powerful than the ones before it - but your skills 'automatically dodge' comes into effect, and you move as fast as a blink out of the AOE, now invisible.

The Dwarf doesn't confirm your death - the moment you charged in he began throwing fireballs at your allies - no, at his allies. The red skinned, horned woman at the center is aimed at with a multitude of fire spells, and as they land you see her health go up, even as the small explosions deal more damage to your allies. It's a powerful combination - a tank absorbing fire damage, and a caster focused on aoe fire damage. You can see how well they work together. You are sure it's not unbeatable though, and your invisible axes begin cutting into the dwarf. They fly through him as if he wasn't there, but you're sure there's no skill powerful enough to negate all damage. You're suddenly visible, but your axes are back in your hand as they finish their arc and land. This time you blink in front of him, placing yourself between his spells and their target.

It's a damage race, as you use your axes, your legs, and even a long howl to summon up distractions (that quickly die to the aoes) to attack the flame dwarf. Each time you cut off a limb with the axes, it takes time to regenerate, and soon enough he's limbless, as you continually cut off the newly formed ones. He cries out, "Pyre, get her off me!" But you hear Tyler, Tank, and Dukke call out their taunts in succession. You're not sure how long they will last against a stronger target - which these two obviously are. But it lasts long enough that the dwarf's flame form fades out of sight, replaced by his normal body, right before you crack his head open with your axe, turning him to light before the gruesome scene can be depicted.

quote:

You have leveled up.

quote:

You have leveled up.

quote:

You have leveled up.

You have no time to look at the notifications that popped up, as you turn back to the other fight. Without the priest's healing fire, Pyre isn't dealing with the crowd of attackers nearly as well - even her flame aura appears to have been from the Dwarf. You yell to her, "You've lost, give up!" Because you're feeling generous.

But you're a second too late, as a massive lance of ice pierces straight through her chest right after you finish offering surrender. It's larger than any magic you've seen Suz cast before, and all at once she transforms into bright, hot light.

quote:

Mark of the Blood King has leveled up.

quote:

You have leveled up.

quote:

You have leveled up.

Wait, why is her death so blindingly hot that you can feel it on your skin? The 'Flamewarden' ignites into flames as she dies, and a massive explosion lights up the area with even more fire. A 'trigger on death' skill that lights up everyone in melee with her, most of whom were already wounded. You see SKS disappear into shadows right before the explosion, but it takes a few moments for the light to clear and for you to check over people's statuses.

The woods around you on fire, you survey the damage - Suz, Eagle, Darra, and Charrin are untouched. The pups as well are alive and well, still 'staying' by the ranged group's feet. You see Tank turning to light, Lavender apparently pinned under the dying tank who took the blast for her - leaving her alive and well. Dukke is alive as well, under a flaming tree that looks ready to collapse at any moment. You blink over and lift the large bear man out from there, just in time for the tree to collapse and fall.

SKS appears a moment later, and... that's it. You see a large ironwood helmet that Tyler wears, one of Lila's knives, and Lavender is holding Tank's gauntlets. Boarmaster's armor has been flung far away, but you spot it as you're surveying the hellscape that was the battle arena. A minute later, you hear Tyler in the guild chat, "Guess she got the four of us."

Complaints about dying fly, apparently the penalty for dying in PVP is fairly stiff - a guaranteed item drop, and a full 100% level reduction. However, everyone still got the XP for both of those kills - meaning everyone got between four and six levels, even after the death penalty was applied. You have time to look over your own notification windows now.

Your opponent was at least level 25. And while he may have been a priest(?) class, you still basically soloed him with your inflated abilities. No wonder they were hunting here so easily. Walking over lets you inspect it yourself.

These were two obviously a skilled combination, and you're certain that between their levels and the synergies you saw, they would have easily handled a group of your size, if it weren't for your own inflated abilities. They were more than twice your level. You sit down with the rest of the group as Charrin weaves healing prayer after healing prayer over those who survived to get them back to full. They definitely would have been useful allies in this event, but... you're pretty glad you didn't pull your punches at all. You're sure they would have killed more people had you not been going all out.

"Do we wait for the others?" Lavender is the one to bring it up, as you rest.

"Tyler said to go on and get started, and that the rest of them would take the longer route and meet up before the subjugation next week." Suz shrugs it off.

But you get a PM from Tank, "We can make it back with you guys in two days, and all be there for the event with only a little delay!" He wants you to start heading back, and meet up in the middle - this would mean another three and a half or so days in the Woods, before you make it to the event, as opposed to your group arriving tomorrow, and Tyler's reinforcements six days from now. It would still be faster than had you taken the safe route over the roads.

Unfortunately for you, you have no time to debate or make decisions on this matter. Because as the flames die out from your fight, something else cracks. The ground itself. You hear it before you feel it, but the smell of the burning woods attracted something very large. Large enough to make the ground shake like a tiny earthquake with each step. Behold My Magnificence!
A. Blood King's Duplication - Takes advantage of our inflated stats
D - Try running. I doubt we can hide everyone and we can always fight as a last resort.

20 STR, 20 AGI, 10 STAM

I can be talked out of the stats. We aren't going for any piece of gear or anything, right?

A, D. We need to leave this place 10 minutes ago!

No real opinion on how to assign stats at the moment.

Also, could we keep what the Dwarf and Oni dropped in a separate trust, outside the Need and Greed?

+1 to this. I imagine they'd want their stuff back.

Someone asked in the discord what the stat bonuses from the mark were (oops, I'm editing those into the OP character sheet now!) but it was 20 sta/wis/int, so option C gives an additional 20 to each of those areas, for a total of 60 extra stats (and they count as base stats, just like the original Mark stats)

CE Nothing to show us being loud with the powers we're hoarding.

Also, could we keep what the Dwarf and Oni dropped in a separate trust, outside the Need and Greed?
